6 game IR rules?

What are the rules for players that are extended on the 6 game IR?

1. Are they able to practice immediately since they were able to do so as part of the 1st 6 game stint.
2. If they are activated after another 1 - 3 more games, is that the only part of the SMS which counts.

I ask because we have several players which pass the 1st 6 game IR stint after this game. Hard to determine whether they are extended, moved to AR, PR or 1 game IR.

Ball, Clercius, Novak and Schmekel all fall into the group in question.  Dixon and Woodbey would be available after game 7.

I can imagine Ball, Clercius and Schmekel all as candidates to be added next week, regardless of new injuries this week.

Clercius is an upgrade over both Cobb or Corcoran as a receiver but also as a blocker IMO.

Ball and Schmekel replaces Bouliane and Stuart is my guess but Novak is in the mix as well. Both Ball and Novak are good ST players.

Seems like they've been putting off some of these decisions for awhile now but they'll have to make a few changes next week, don't think anybody wants to go back on the 6 game or the PR, might be some hard decisions made and a few cuts.

I'm not sure if they were putting it off. These players only started practice after game 4. Barring new injuries it does become a bit of a math problem with space on the roster overall.

It's why I posed the question about possible extensions until a need exists to activate.

Several teams could use some of our ST players so maybe a trade for a 2027 draft choice?

1. No practice. When a player is extended on the 6-game injured list it is treated as a new 6-game stint.

2. Up to two times per year, a team can remove a player who had been extended on the 6-game injured list and the SMS for the second (partial) stint will not count. It is the team option if/when they exercise this option.

Hmmmm. Ok that seems counter productive for item 1 but that clarifies the situation. It will make the ultimate decisions be made in real time. Not much point in extending players when they are healthy enough for full practice.

Neither does moving them to the 1 game IR but we know teams do that often. Next week roster choices will be interesting to see how they deal with extra bodies. I suppose RR is an option but teams haven't really been using that often. Same net result as moving to 1 game IR.

Most of the players are rookies or non starters ( ST'ers ) with the exception of Clercius.

I think every rookie should be willing to go on the PR if the team needs them to shuffle the roster around managing injuries, if the player doesn't accept that reality they don't belong on the team.  It gets trickier with vet players, I'm skeptical with what they're doing with Vanterpool, and if he's injured or just being hid out of sight. Hardly played last season and looks the same this season, why are they hanging onto this guy, maybe he's Stan's chauffeur?

Sure for rookies but it's still a question of cumulative space on the PR. Most if not all of the players on the 6 game IR are at least 2nd year players. There could be a couple of Canadian rookies that could get bumped to the PR from the AR, but then who is released to make that space?

Vanterpool status is unknown as far as injury. He can't practise for a few more weeks if he is healthy at that time.

Is it retroactive to the last time the player dressed, or to the last time the player practiced?

If a player hasn't practiced or played in 2 weeks, does putting him on the 6 game start at week 3?
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

Unless something has changed it goes by games and has nothing to do with practices. There's no retroactive move. Collaros was on the one-game last week so the salary counted. He's on the 6-game now so it's sheltered so long as we don't pull him off early. The only exception are playoff bye weeks, which count as a game served if you happen to be on the list and your team earned a bye.

If Collaros stays on the 6 game IR for the full duration, his season as a starter is basically over. He wouldn't be back until game 12 more or less.

We'll have to see if he starts practising during the 6 game stint in the 4th week. How Brown plays etc will come into play as well. SMS is a factor but will not be the deciding factor.

Even if Brown is winning his games, he's one hit away from being able to play. Not targeting his injury history but QB's often get hurt during the season and miss games.

I doubt anybody thought Rourke would be injured on the 2nd play yesterday or BLM would break his ankle. We have 12 players on the 6 game IR at the moment. It's a violent sport.

What about a player in game 5 or 6 practicing a week but they realize he's not healthy and then extend him.  Because he practiced when it was allowed, do they lose the SMS savings and/or lose the partial-relief option Junkie outlined?

Not sure exactly what you mean but the 1st 6 games would be exempt.

I mean by practicing when you are allowed to on the 6G (after game 5?), do you lose any ability to "extend".  Yes, you could start a brand new 6G after game 6... but there is that "partial extension is SMS sheltered" aspect.

In theory that player is healthy and I'd hope that would would mean he's not extended. I think that happens more when a player is still not practising in the 1st go around on the 6 game IR.

Yes the partial exemption is what you mentioned. OTOH do you want to extend that player when he is currently practising and then can't continue in the extension. If he's healthy I wouldn't like to see him bumped to 1 game IR but that might happen. Where is the line drawn for a player that starts practice again in week 4 compared to the one that starts in week 6 from a coaching point of view? Week 4 is closer to ready than week 6.

Santos-Knox will be extended since he's finished for the season. Allen probably gets extended as well.

Others like Ball, Clercius and a few others started practising in week 4. So I expect they will be moved elsewhere on the roster. I've suggested which I think will be added to the AR, but exactly who gets bumped and to where is less clear.

New injuries today may alter any perceived plan. There are some 1st year players on the AR at the moment that will be bumped to the PR IMO.

I'm not sure anyone on the 6 game IR gets moved to 1 game IR to hide healthy players. Something has to give though. By my count there should be 4 players coming off of the 6 game IR after this game.  Another couple in another couple of games.
