Winnipeg Football Club Unveils 2023 Community Impact Report

WINNIPEG, MB., April 18, 2024 - For the first time, the Winnipeg Football Club has unveiled a Community Impact Report showcasing the remarkable work and positive impact the team has made within the community over the course of the previous year.

In 2023, the Club actively participated in or hosted over 200 community events, exemplifying its commitment to community engagement. Through the charitable ticket program, the Club partnered with more than 40 organizations, donating over 600 tickets to individuals who may not have had the opportunity to attend a Blue Bombers game otherwise.

"This year, we are proud to present an extensive overview of the positive and growing work our team has undertaken in the community," said President & CEO Wade Miller. "With the growing number of events, youth camps, training seminars, and community outreach programming, it felt necessary to give our work in the community its own moment to shine."

The report delves into the Club's commitment to support and grow amateur football in Manitoba while recognizing the power of sport to inspire, educate, and unite people of all ages. It highlights the Club's dedication to various community initiatives not only in Winnipeg but also in surrounding areas, making football accessible to as many youth as possible.

The Winnipeg Football Club extends its gratitude to its partners and fans who have made this remarkable community outreach possible. The Club takes immense pride in its ability to give back to the community and remains dedicated to furthering community engagement efforts and making a lasting difference in the years to come.

Canucks F Boeser didn't travel with the team. I'd imagine they'll be resting at least a few of their starters tonight, too.

Quote from: Blue In BC on April 18, 2024, 03:17:17 PMThat's the overall pick # 28, so that might be a choice to make. I never know much about the players potentially going to be drafted. Just a bit when articles are posted. That said, we have a need for a player with that skill set.

Whether he's the best choice for that spot of LS and a FB, I don't really know. It will just be something to watch which team has an interest and in what round etc etc. Bombers may have other ideas for that role so seeing who they pick is always interesting.

Benson turns 37 before TC. Just noticed we have the same birthday but I'm literally twice his age. lol While he's probably capable of playing several more years, he may not want to, so having someone in the pipeline is something I'd expect to see this season.

Some of the guys that do the mocks, besides the conversation on these sites are mentioning Chris-Ike out of Delaware as the choice. Chris-Ike combine numbers are very good and what he brings to the football field college wish need to taken into account, but overall for what the Bombers require, Brad Hladik would be a better "fit" in my opinion.

Ha! I have no experience actually marketing sports teams -- I use their reach and influence with their fan base to try and change consumer behaviors/perceptions but I do have a lot of empathy for those in the Elks marketing department trying to engage that fanbase. It would not be easy.

In general, ticket-based events are a heavy lift right now for a variety of factors. It's one of the first things consumers can cut back spending on (not just sports, but concerts, family experiences [like Zoo, plays, museums, etc.]) Disposable income is strained virtually across the board.

Beyond the macro though, more specific to the Elks, their rebrand was necessary but probably did them no favours (I'd bet they have research that shows it hasn't resonated well across any demo). They've appeared to bottom out to such a critical threshold that their game day atmosphere has been impacted which is a critical way to sell sports to non-sports (or non-football) fans. Those segments are needed to succeed in the CFL. Consider the Bombers new billboards 'Winnipeg's Biggest Party'. Edmonton can't claim nor sell that experience which means they're left with what seems like a narrow base of die-hard CFL football fans who primarily (or exclusively) care about the actual football. (As an aside, this is why BC's new owner is bringing in bands and always taking about the game day experience) The further challenge with the die-hard football fan in Edmonton is that the team has been so bad for so long (and my gut says the rebrand would test most unpopular with this group, in particular) that even that group is largely disinterested as that type of fan probably largely expects a competitive product.

All that to say I doubt there is a marketing-exclusive answer to the issue. It definitely won't be solved with a new slogan and some direct emails. They need to be more competitive. They probably need to spend to improve the game day experience (which would be a tough sell internally). The truth is there probably aren't a lot of good things to market there. The standard sports pillars, i guess: Tradition. Community. Excitement. The sport itself.  I'm glad I'm not the one trying to hit whatever metrics they're after.

Quote from: Throw Long Bannatyne on April 18, 2024, 03:13:00 PMThe one thing I'm curious about is whether these allegations against Kelly came out only after her contract was not renewed by the Argos.  Could be the case of a disgruntled worker disparaging a former employer in any way she could, which isn't that uncommon.  She was hired on a yearly renewable contract, so the Argos are not required to offer any explanation or reason for not renewing her contract, it's their prerogative.  Just because they renewed it multiple times before doesn't mean they have to continue that trend.

According to this article, she said she was informed on Jan. 29th that her contract wouldn't be renewed.

The timeline in the article makes it sound like she attempted to notify her superiors back in early November about the situation. However, nothing was done to address it, much less try and resolve it. Hardly surprising with John Murphy being involved.

This whole ugly thing seems to go well beyond simply being a case of a disgruntled and/or vindictive employee.

Pretty heinous allegations all the same, IMO.

Kelly's history over the last decade doesn't help his cause, either.
