Blue, one of the young LB's that we picked up last year, has a background as a snapper from his college days. Perhaps that area may not be such a concern.

Quote from: ModAdmin on April 19, 2024, 12:17:59 AMIn a court of law, under oath, you are 100% correct.  The court of public opinion is different.  The longer this draws out with no comment or resolution, the worse it's going to get for the Argos and, perhaps, the league.  I have to believe, internally, the Argos have all the details they need to come to a decision.  The question is, what will be their strategy going forward.  And the pressure will continue to be on them the closer we get to the start of the 2024 season.
What could the Argo's possibly say in public that would help them in the court of public opinion? Attack her story and they're attacking a female victim. Say she's right but it doesn't amount to harassment or firing, which is likely the court case. Still attacking a female victim.

Harassment? Sounds like it, but it wasn't enough for her to quit. In fact she would have signed another contract if one was offered.

Firing? The Argos didn't fire her & she didn't quit because of the harassment. The Argos chose the person who was worth way more to the team to keep and didn't offer a contract to the low end employee. That's business.

I really like the program they do to fly in northern communities to attend the games.  Talk about a cool experience for the kids that they'll probably never forget.  A night or two away from home and an evening at the stadium... crazy fun for kids of every age.

Often forgotten are the small airlines that contribute in a big way to make that happen.  Kudos to them.

I'm not sure any other team does this?  TSN should play it up more on TV when WPG does this... an on-screen mention and camera shot each time at minimum.  How is that not top notch, feel-good publicity for the entire CFL??

Quote from: Waffler on April 18, 2024, 01:15:54 PMThis is called blaming the victim.

Sure, keep an open mind if you want but blaming the victim is why more don't come forward.

Of course I'll keep an open mind.  But looking at all possibilities seem like a fair thing to do.  Most are so quick to condemn Kelly as guilty or to just pay up, so how is saying sometimes these things turn out to be a lie or setup unfair?  Why is one ok yet the gets its own negative-sounding label?

Hey, I'm definitely in the Kelly's-a-creep and probably-did-it camp, but there is the (however remote) possibility it's all a $ grab.

Will you equally condemn the accuser if it turns out it's a big lie or hoax?  Many times when that is the outcome the story just quietly goes away, perhaps after leaving a life in shambles.

Right now it's she-said he-said.  That's literally all we have to go on.  That's the problem many of us are speaking to... it's not good to leave everyone hanging like this.  Imaginations can run wild.

Quote from: Throw Long Bannatyne on April 19, 2024, 03:18:00 AMOnly two options remain, either the Argos have the situation completely under control, or they're about to massively flub it up just in time for the season to get rolling.  Hard to believe they wouldn't do everything to avoid the second scenario at this point.

Yes, the longer this draws out the more likely the outcome is that Kelly will win the case.  Because if there was damning evidence then all parties just pay the ask$ to make it all go away.  $50k pittance from Kelly and $250k outside the sms for the Argos?  Chump change.  Ambrosie being quiet also hints at this: Argos may have shown him evidence (witnesses, texts, emails) that it's phony.

Why fight it and keep it in the public eye if her case is rock solid?  There is nothing to gain.  At the end they'd have to pay her her ask, plus $50k legal fees.  Imagine the optics for them if that happens?  They're out the money and look like big meanies and abusers.  Who would risk that unless they were sure they'd win?

Kelly may be dumb, but the Argos lawyer team is not, I assure you.

Quote from: theaardvark on April 18, 2024, 09:15:03 PMIf that is the case, their own team should not have been in the ranking at all...

Bingo Bango.  I told you the whole article was dumb!  ;D  8)

Quote from: Sir Blue and Gold on April 18, 2024, 05:19:20 PMBeyond the macro though, more specific to the Elks, their rebrand was necessary but probably did them no favours (I'd bet they have research that shows it hasn't resonated well across any demo).

With 5 years-ish under the belt, one can look back at the knee-jerk fast-track rebrand as a complete disaster.  The team went from competitive to garbage virtually the instant that happened.  Ticket sales started their big decline right at that same time (even excluding covid effects), and have still not stopped declining.

I actually think about this sometimes... why didn't they just rebrand as the Esks?  No, not the full name-that-shall-not-be-spoken-again.  Just Esks.  Just say it had nothing to do with the old name.  It's just a new word they made up, kind of like Maple Leafs ("leafs" isn't a work), or Redblacks.

I bet fans would have liked the Esks name far more than the Elks.  Heck, I remember the copious "Esks new name" threads in 2018-2020 and us here came up with far better names than "Elks".

Heck, just call them the "EDM E's" or something, would have been better and not riled up so many fans.

And about the research: they had never changed it to that point because their research showed year after year that almost no one gave a hoot, even amongst the eponymous people (yes even recognizing it's incorrect or pejorative).  The biggest problem is the demo that got most angry at the old name is mostly the demo that will never attend a CFL game (and no, it has nothing to do with race).  The change bought them nothing but lost STH and a cursed team name.

Oh well, as long as they don't fold or need MTL-level of cash infusions, it's not our problem: I like having a free spot on the bingo card 2-3 times a season.  They made their bed, they can lie in it.  Maybe their new owner should change the name again on day 1; I don't know to what... just anything but Elks.

Quote from: Sir Blue and Gold on April 18, 2024, 05:19:20 PMConsider the Bombers new billboards 'Winnipeg's Biggest Party'.

Just saw the new one literally just down my street in Chazwood today.  Awesome!!  Captures the excitement you'll get by coming out to the games.  I id'd it within half a second as being a Bomber ad.  I think it'll be a winner.  Bombers always put up some ads in Chazwood... they must have determined it to be a target-rich demo.  They'd be right.  Flags & signs around everywhere.  I'd still have my '19 and '21 free signs up if the weather hadn't destroyed them by last year.  One of these days I'll get my new flag pole installed (it's just sitting in the garage) and hoist my unused Chazwood Bomber Fan flag.

It will just be something to watch which team has an interest and in what round etc etc. Bombers may have other ideas for that role so seeing who they pick is always interesting.

Bit early for achilles injures... that's some bad luck.  I wish him well.  OTT just can't catch a break, eh?  Time for them to go couch hunting.

Well, a very good regular season. A few hiccups along the way. But, very entertaining.

- 52 wins, 110 points, and the William A Jennings Trophy.

Now on to the 1st. round of the playoffs. Bring on the Whiteout.
