Title: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Post by: ModAdmin on June 18, 2022, 05:11:11 PM
Someone should pick this up after future games, but here is yesterday's game...

The Good

We found a way to win.
The D is shutting down the opposition in the 2nd half again.
The stellar play of Deatrick Nichols
The return of Jackson Jeffcoat
We are 2 and 0.

The Bad

Missed convert again.
Winston Rose needs to step up his game.
Too many passing yards allowed again.
Too much pressure, at times, on Zach

The Ugly

Disrespectful forum posters.  Won't be tolerated again.

It's early in the season. There was not real useful film on what the Redblacks were going to do on either side of the ball. They had massive roster turnover and added some really good talent.

The good news is that we were still able to make necessary adjustments in the 2nd half of the game. That's become a hallmark for the defence.

On offence we're a different team from 2021 and not many starters played in pre season. Offences take a few games to get in sync.

The good news is that the new players: Ellingson, Schoen in particular are doing very well.

The bad news is that some 2021 players are not quite back up to form yet.

Good

Return of the good bad ugly theme thanks Modadmin
2-0
Zach making the plays we really needed to have
More consistent D line pressure
We took very few penalties yet again
Red backs taking loads of bad penalties

Bad

Secondary still giving up yards by the mound
Goldie accidentally deleting yesterdays game for review >:(

Ugly

This mornings hail storm

Title: Re: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Good

Win, 2-0
Defence limiting TDs
Second half saw the offence start to click
Emergence of JA and ND in the 4th
Jeffcoat is back

Bad

Masoli slinging the ball at will
OL still not up to standard
Took more penalties than normal
ZC was tossing the ball into double coverage.... a lot....

Ugly

Kicking game
Not crossing 20 points two games in a row - wont win many weeks

Good

We won.
Ellingson is #1 with a bullet and Schoen is looking promising.
Decent pressure on Massoli.

Bad

We gave up way too many yards way too easily and Rose was bad again.
Run game needs a lot of work.
Bailey took a stupid misconduct penalty.
Not convinced we addressed the problems from the previous week effectively.

The Ugly

GDT was full with a lot of garbage.  I get that some people like jacking their post counts with dumb 1 liners and vague insults, but it was hovering below Area51 and Lyle type posts yesterday.

I will take the main responsibility for that. I was at a wedding and not on the forum. The problem was addressed when I got home

My apologies to those that were offended.

I like this list.  Second effort of JA27. And the play of DS83 getting open deep twice.

Bad: I would add losing MC59. CK67 filled in nicely, but I wouldn't want MC out to long.

Bombers are 2-0
The running game picked up in the second half
Collaros started spreading the ball around the second half

The Bad
Defense still needs to gel
Giving up to many long bombs
The kicking game definitely needs to improve

The Ugly
Commentary during the game instead of during halftime or a break.  I don't mind the commentary but show me the game that is actually playing!!!

The Good

For the W
Collaros
Ellingson and Schoen
Kyrie Wilson

The Bad

Not enough snaps for Augustine
Gray
No speed at WR to take the top of the opposition secondary
The Un-Legghio

The Bad
Bombers secondary

Our secondary, especially Rose, is suspect.

When does Alexander get back??!! We miss him dearly on D

Thanks for the thread.

The good
Amazing win
Schoen and Ellingson
Bombers. Seeming ability to "rope-a-dope"  and come back with authority
Brilliant strategy to save #27 Johnny Augustine, for the fourth.
D-Line did everyone get a sack?

The bad
The Bombers left guard. Yikes I didn't know he was that
The corner with. The name like a flower.  Is that guy twenty  pounds over weight? Why can't he cover anyone?
Our safety...has he made any knockdowns?  Or maybe he's a run stopper?

The ugly
Loss of transmission for a while.
Lt guard.

We have a lot to be thankful for as compared to the other teams.

The good
2-0
The defence isn't giving up many points
We seemed to gell as the game wore on

The bad
Losing our starting center
Giving up over 700 yards against in the air over two games

The ugly
The dropoff in our o-line play thus far

Title: Re: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

I agree on the contrast between JA27 running and BO20 running performances. Why oh why aren?t we going with JA27 and spelling him off only when he is winded??

Oliveria seems to get used more in the short passing game. He might also be a better blocker on pass protection. 20 lbs heavier and ball security might a decision reason. Coaches must know something. I'd like to see Augustine get a few more touches but neither has really shown much over the other.

JA27 speed he can also run some pass patterns. Buck needs to find a way to us his quickness.

The reason J.A. never shows more than B.O. is because he's never been given an equal opportunity to do so.  Give him the frickin' football already, when given the chance he has yet to underperform.  10 carries for Brady, 3 for Johnny is not a fair balance of the running attack, it takes most RB's at least 10 runs to build up a head of steam.

I agree if not give Johnny more chances to run with it.

Looking at their career records Augustine has a better YPC. Carries are not that dissimilar so there is a reasonable point he should be the # 1 RB.

If we don't see an improvement soon from BO then perhaps we see a change. I can't justify why the coaches choose the starter versus the back up. They must have a reason. At the very least we should be running more often for any run game to succeed. Whether they alternate both more often or choose one to get the run game going is a question.

Possible injuries to our OL aren't making it an easy choice. Both are being tackled in the back field too often.

BO is getting his fair share being a hometown boy. They have to let him prove he can do the job. Lots of football to play. I believe JA is the better RB and will get his fair share soon. Every starter will be given enough games to prove himself. 2 games is not enough.

I'm glad nearly everyone is on the same page at this point with the RB situation. I do hope they make the adjustment to swap roles for BO and JA. I think it would be super positive!

Anyone else find themselves thinking, let's get Harris and Adams back.  We are just a shell of ourselves.

Poor Rasheed, he hasn't stepped up at all. Is he getting the defenders best covering him?  Maybe.

Nope. Thinking we need someone to replace Desjarlais, and when Alexander comes back our D will respond just like it did when we shifted him to safety. Remember our D before Alexander went to safety??? We re looking at it right now!!

I would bring JA in on run plays (run), bring BO in on pass plays (block).  Do that for 2 Q.  When they adjust at halftime, switch them around a couple of plays then do it all again.  Mess with their heads.

Or just do what we all say and run with JA for 80% of the snaps.

BO is the better blocker (strong showing in week 1) but JA had a couple of good blocks in week 2.

Yes DM, should have kept AH, and that is the correct call until AH ends up in the tub for an extended period, then I eat crow.  We're suffering like this for a measly $40k in offer difference, and AH likely would have halved that had we been "respectful" (in his eyes).  BO doesn't know how to "fall forward" and thus loses the "free" 2 yards extra every touch that AH gets.  JA just uses his speed and slipperiness to get that extra 2.

Hey, you want something interesting, watch how MOS treats AH on the sidelines in GC '19 vs '21... world of difference.  "Love you man" in '19, crickets in '21.  AH was inadvertently burning the Mafia bridges for all of '21, I think.  They never got over his not showing up in shape and missing half the season.

The AH33 boat has sailed... ironically to the guys with the sailboat on their helmets! I would add he didn't make it through the whole game, he's in the tub with "a tight hamstring"... I say that in every yoga class and I'm 63 years old, I'm pretty sure its an age thing because no matter how much I stretch I've been saying it for a very long time now. When your star running back is on the sidelines in the 4th Q because he is engine is feeling tight that might be a sign that the stars brightness is beginning to fade, and a supernova event is on the horizon.

Jet fighter pilots and athletes prove on a daily basis that the mind is much stronger than our physical bodies, it will keep going and not quit long after the body has stopped answering the bell.

Techno and Jesse, good points

I'll throw this out there.  I wonder if they bring Andrew back here at the end of the season?  His eyes look defeated.  He ran good though, proud of him
Brady has been  a little disappointing.  Like many I am thinking Augustine offers more of a challenge for a defence.  The Canadian in Hamilton looks real good also, except he seemed to blow a couple receptions that eventually killed Hammy.
Hamstrings, I found out are not something that will loosen up if ya work them.

Once you get a twinge, you have to sit out and wait till its "no pain" then you can work out gradually.  That's been my experience.

But yeah, I was thinking with Andrew, "Here we go again"

I think he and Brady are too big.

AH33: I recall people here saying $160k TOR and $120 WPG offer.  No way TOR is paying AH $225k when they know he would come there for peanuts (just gotta beat WPG's offer, treat him nice and say "no workout").  If the numbers are anywhere near what I've heard here... well, I won't repost my feelings from the other threads.  Even $160k vs $100k and we suck up and play nice and sweeten the offer $130k, we likely would have landed AH.

I think it's pretty clear Mafia wanted to move on.  Maybe/probably for a myriad of reasons.  If nothing else, the AH situation is complicated.  Oh, the tales MOS will be able to tell (if he wants, probably won't) after he is long retired...

It's not just the difference between our offer and the Argos offer. It's the domino effect across the roster. Whether we paid him $120K or $160K, where would we have trimmed that elsewhere from the roster.

It may have cost us one of the other 2 Canadian RB's ( $90K ) and some other player making more than an ELC.

If the Mafia wanted to move on, they would not have asked him to come in and work out, or made him a sight-unseen offer that was fair under the circumstances, but insulting to a proud player.

The fact that his hammy is already tweaked and Dinwiddie said it has been bothering him all spring that a workout probably does not go well. He maximized his pay this year by snubbing the workout request and getting someone else, Pinball in this case, to sign him, knowing he might be damaged goods, just in case.  What surprised me was that Chris Jones wasn't in on the bidding.

That's not the point. If roster size was bigger and SMS was never a question, we'd probably liked to have kept D. Adams, Richardson, Jones, Lawler and A. Harris on the roster. Every player you retain has an impact on who else who can keep.

It's business and I think the point of an insulting offer to a player ( in theory ) is over stated by many posters. So is the idea that he's already nicked and that is solely due to his age. While it might be true it might not.

Calgary lost 2 RB's in their last game. They may or may not be lost for an extended time. At this point we don't know if A. Harris will end up on IR or not as well.

Young players and old players get hurt. It's been pointed out that the Als and Redblacks also lost their RB's right off the bat.

You were right about the 165 (according to 3downnation anyway).

But Harris was on record as saying that we were offering him less than Brady and Johnny who make somewhere around 100 each.

Yes, that would have been nice. But with the salary of WJ5, AB4, also resigning JJ94, ZC8, both with nice increases, adding GE2 at $170K, and then there is Mr. Rose and Wilson. There just isn't enough money to go around. Happens to every championship team in every sport.

Not saying he is already nicked due to his age, but that he might already have been damaged when he signed, and that was why he refused a workout.  Harris has always been a workout fanatic, until he got married.  Marriage / fatherhood changes a lot of priorities, and we know he came to camp last year in awful shape, although he managed to turn it around by season's end, just in time.

If the mafia were OK with that happening again, and confident he could repeat that, I'm sure they would have signed him first.  And tehn chosen between BO20 and JA27, and if the odd man out wanted to stay for league min with the thought of playoff money, we;d have all three.  But the possibility that the GC run had been tough on him, and that he might not be 100% (no one would know better than the WBB training staff), and the mafia wanted to confirm that he was either 100%, or was on track to be,,,  a player has to accept being put on the 6 game, and that's the nlny place you get SMS relief, so if AH33 signed for $130k, and then sat on the 1 game for half the season... not only do you not have your starting RB, but you are also bleeding SMS...

If AH33 is 100%, we find the extra $30k to sign him every day of the week.

What do you do with all the extra time you gain from not typing full names?

I cannot fathom why this is such a nuanced conversation. He is a 35-year-old running back and we have two good, much younger, much cheaper players.

Yes, talk about beating a dead horse.

Did you even read my explanation? Clearly you didn't understand it.

Well, he is giving us the numbers.  Any uberfan who doesn't know the numbers of all the starters... well...

P.S. Curse Nichols for changing his number!  Still adjusting to that.

P.P.S. I think this is the first time ever that we have a 0 and 00?  00???  What is this, (non-MB) roulette?

Agree, that was stupid. Suits loves that kind of stuff.

Suitor is getting more annoying by the game.  His leash may be tightening too with all his comments on the officiating.  There?s a reason he is the brunt of most jokes in the officials room.
