5 Things you should know about Jalen Saunders - Ed Tait

Jalen Saunders officially scribbled his name on a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, potentially adding another threat to the two-time Grey Cup champions' aerial attack. Saunders will speak with the media on Monday, but in the meantime here are 5 Things You Should Know about the Blue Bombers new addition...

1. IT'S BEEN A WHILE...

Saunders has 25 games of Canadian Football League experience, all with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. But his last CFL appearance came on September 3, 2018 in the Ticats annual Labour Day showdown with the Toronto Argonauts.

Saunders, now 29, suffered an ACL tear in his right knee in that game, ending what had been a promising season. At the time of the injury he had 45 receptions for 739 yards and two touchdowns in just nine games - a year after leading the team in receiving with 76 catches for 1,170 yards and four TDs. His QB in 2017, just FYI, was Zach Collaros.

The Ticats re-signed Saunders that December, but then released him prior to the start of training camp in '19 when it was determined his return - initially pegged for August - would take longer. He surfaced with the XFL's Houston Roughnecks in 2020 - former Ticats head coach June Jones was the boss there - but was put on injured reserve and a few months later the league ceased operations.

Saunders then signed with the Ottawa RedBlacks in 2020 and again in January of 2021 after the CFL's 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic. He retired from football on June 15 of last year after being in a serious car accident mid-May.

2. WAIT... SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT?

Just prior to the start of camp last year, Saunders was in a car accident before coming to Ottawa and posted on his Twitter account, "Blessed to be alive this morning, this really made me realize who really in my corner."

The RedBlacks had left the door open for Saunders as to a possible return in '21, but that never materialized. The Blue Bombers first began discussions with Saunders in February and as his contract with Ottawa had expired, he was no longer on the retired list.

3. A LONG AND WINDING ROAD

Saunders was a fourth-round draft pick, 104th overall, by the New York Jets in 2014 after posting a 4.44 40 in testing, and dressed for 15 games in his rookie season - three with the Jets, six with the New Orleans Saints and three more with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.

Saunders was traded by New Orleans to the New England Patriots in 2015 but was released and then signed with the Chicago Bears. He was suspended for four games in November of 2015 for violating the league's substance abuse policy, with that suspension later lengthened to 10.

Upon signing with the RedBlacks - after having his 2020 season with Houston cancelled and then the plug pulled on the CFL campaign - Saunders said this in an interview with Tim Baines of The Ottawa Sun:

"It's been quite a journey these past few years, I'm not going to lie. I think about how many times I got cut, how many times I got injured. That kind of adversity would stop some people. You're training so hard for 2020 and both your seasons get wiped out? You prep, prep and prep and all of a sudden it's over. You have to hope you get another chance. At first I was really sad. I was down. But I knew I had to keep going. I look at life like the sun will always come up tomorrow. That's just the way I go about it."

During the pandemic became part owner of a moving company and also started up a tax-return business.

4. THE COLLEGE DAYS

Saunders began his college days at Fresno State, playing catch with current Las Vegas Raiders star QB Derek Carr and pulling in 27 passes for 441 yards and three TDs. A year later he was a First-Team All-WAC selection with 50 receptions for 1,065 yards and 12 TDs. That year the Bulldogs offence was also bolstered by the addition of Davante Adams, the star Green Bay Packers receiver who was traded to the Raiders last month.

Also on the Fresno State roster that year? Current Blue Bombers linebacker and one of the heroes of the 2021 Grey Cup, Kyrie Wilson.
Saunders transferred to Oklahoma in 2012 and made an instant impact with the Sooners. In just nine games he had 62 receptions for 829 yards and three TDs and included in those numbers was a 15-catch, 181-yard performance against Notre Dame in which he tied the school record for catches in a game and set another with eight of those coming in the first quarter.

A year later he was named to Second-Team All-Big 12 after a season in which he had 61 receptions for 729 yards and eight TDs, including a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama in which he had five catches for 75 yards and two TDs.

5. SMALL IN STATURE, BIG IN HEART

Saunders was listed at 5-8 7/8 at the 2014 NFL Combine, but that has never stopped him from being productive and resilient in overcoming injuries - an attribute that could serve him well with the Bombers. "Growing up, I was always the smallest player on the team, I'd get tossed around," Saunders told The Ottawa Sun last year. "My dad was always my coach. I would complain, 'Pops, I got a bruise on my arm.' He'd ask, 'Are you hurt or are you injured?' That stuck with me. So, when I felt like I couldn't get up on my own, it was something serious."

Smaller than I thought he was and probably not much meat on them bones.  I prefer receivers that can get their nose dirty and and execute blocking assignments when they're not the primary target, it keeps them involved.

IF he's recovered he will be a good one.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released receiver Jalen Saunders, the team announced on Wednesday.

The news comes just over a month after the American pass-catcher signed a two-year deal with the club.

Before signing with the Bombers, Saunders last played with Hamilton in 2018. That season, Saunders registered 45 receptions for 739 receiving yards and two touchdowns in nine games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, prior to suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Toronto Argonauts.

Per DT, he sat out the practice yesterday after practicing at Ellingson's spot the other day.
This could be injury-related.

Too bad....he was a gamer though.    It would have been a minor miracle had he cracked our lineup!   Unfortunately, miracles are few and far between.

With the talent we brought in I couldn't see him making the team as a starter.

I feel badly for Saunders. I don't know if he had a new injury or difficulty recovering from his accident last year. I suspect that may be partially the reason but think overall he lost out to competition in camp.

Ironically this might save us a bit on SMS if a rookie wins a role on the AR. I don't think Saunders got a giant deal but it probably was more than an ELC.

The thing that concerned me about Saunders earlier was his small stature and low weight. I would prefer a bigger target but there are a bunch of rookies that may be similar: Grant, McKnight, Muckelvene to name a few.

Schoen is a bigger receiver more similar to D. Adams in size and has had some good comments about his performance in TC. Whether he's the leading candidate? Who knows.

I think he was asking whether you meant he might not make the roster with all the talent brought in. The way you worded it seemed to be contradictory?

Not sure if it was injury related, rehab related, or just that competition is strong in this camp.  No doubt if Saunders made the roster, he would not be on a min wage type deal, so to keep him, he'd have to earn that deal over what the rookies will make.

He might get a look elsewhere still, it is still early.

Saunders contract was probably right around ELC with some bonus benchmarks he could earn if he played well. Highly doubt his release will save us much, or that it played a factor in his release. He was a longshot at best after not playing for 4 years. As fans we recognize the name and hype him up but realistically he was more of a doesn't hurt to have a look type of signing with low expectations. The fact he is already released tells me that we felt he didn't have much upside anymore.

Sounds like Jackson and Schoen are both having a very TC. Headed to TC in a few minutes.

Well he tried it.
Injuries kill all careers, don't they?
It's a brutal game, it's for younger guys.
He obviously could not come back all the way.
Oh well he can get on with his "adult" type long standing jobs.   He has a couple businesses he has created.  So good planning.
I didn't realize he was so small. Lot of those guys round.

His kick return style always reminded me of Pinball.  Small is good for a PR/KR.

New details have emerged regarding the release of Jalen Saunders by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week after a woman came forward to Winnipeg police claiming the CFL receiver sexually assaulted her over the May long weekend.

According to a report from Jeff Hamilton of the Winnipeg Free Press, a 22-year-old woman has filed a formal complaint alleging that Saunders pressed to enter her apartment after a night out at a restaurant and pressured her for sex. She then claims Saunders assaulted her over a period of several hours despite repeated pleas for him to stop.

The Bombers formally released the receiver on Wednesday morning after learning of the accusations. The team provided the following statement to the Winnipeg Free Press:

?On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the (team) was made aware, via social media, of an alleged sexual assault involving one of our players, Jalen Saunders. Immediately, our club advised the individual who came forward to notify the Winnipeg police. At the same time, we began our internal review of the off-field incident, following the CFL policy of violence against women.

After our internal review, this player was immediately released from the roster by our organization. The Winnipeg Football Club takes violence against women and sexual assault seriously, and thanks the individuals for coming forward on this matter.?

Argh.

Foot, meet gun.

Oh well, that definitely makes him not a "MOS locker room type guy".

If true, and it must be credible for the team to take action, I hope the full extent of the law is brought to bear on him.  There is no place in this day and age for this behaviour.  Kudos for the Bombers acting swiftly.

I don't know why they don't use the word "rape" anymore.....that sure sounds like rape to me.

There is no such thing as "rape" under the Criminal Code, that is an American term, in Canada, it is a sexual assault.

I like the term rape better, sexual assault sounds like he maybe grabbed someone's ***.  Pro athletes wriggle out of charges often enough, but Saunders could be facing serious prison time if prosecuted.

This Canada, no one gets serious prison time (although he should) especially if he is a 1st time offender. IF found guilty and depending on the severity/events that took place, the most he will get is 2 years less a day (Provincial time).

And he obviously wont be prosecuted if he's already back in the States.

That is not accurate.  In 1985 the Supreme Court said the starting point is 3 years for intercourse and it has gone up since then.  It depends on on the facts how high it goes. Things have changed even more after ghe Ghomeshi and Friesen cases. There have also been significant changes to the law.

I would not be so sure.  Canad? and the US extradite on a regular basis.  That will be left to the prosecutors.
