Title: Johnny Augustine signs two year contract...
Post by: bigbuff33 on December 27, 2019, 08:56:47 PM
Nice seeing Canadians locked up...
Our scouts do a nice job of finding us players from the States...
Like what I saw of Johnny during the two games Harris was out

I think this surprises me?

I would think he'd have more opportunity elsewhere but I guess teams don't really value runnning backs enough to hire other teams' back ups.

yeah! Superb back up. Nice depth with Oliveira.

Harris, Augustine, Oliveira and Demski as a hybrid threat. Some absolutely incredible, deep, and Canadian, talent we gots.

Also thought he would move on to a bigger role elsewhere but if we are the ones who covet him the most we should consider it a gift and move on. Let?s reward him with a fair amount off opportunities, now.

Excellent depth signing. Augustine showed a ton of great things in the limited time that he was in. Didn't he have at least one +100 yard game? I seem to remember him having at least one.

Good depth signing in case we lose Harris or Demski.

He wasn't one of my top priority signings mostly because I thought that he might want to go elsewhere but he is a good Canadian player and you can never have too many of those. I'll be interested in seeing how they use Harris, Oliviera and Augustine. BTW I believe that he had a reception of 80 yards in the LDC that gave him a 100 yard game.

I hope Augustine gets way more carries in 2020. Good runningback.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-sign running back Johnny Augustine

WINNIPEG, MB., December 27, 2019 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed Canadian running back Johnny Augustine to a two-year contract extension. Augustine was scheduled to be a free agent in February.

Augustine (5-9, 206, University of Guelph, July 7, 1993 in Welland, ON) will be entering his third season with the Bombers in 2020 after signing with the club prior to the 2018 season.

He played in 16 regular season games for the Bombers in 2019, rushing 38 times for 242 yards and adding six receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Augustine earned a spot with the Bombers after an impressive training camp in 2018 that included rushing eight times for 81 yards and a touchdown in a preseason win over Edmonton. He dressed for nine regular season games, rushing seven times for 51 yards and a touchdown - all those touches coming in the club's regular season finale in Edmonton.

Augustine played five seasons with the Guelph Gryphons, rushing for 2,742 yards and 28 touchdowns on 483 rushes. In his senior year, Augustine rushed for 690 yards and nine touchdowns on 122 carries.

Well, with our multi-purpose RB schemes (which I hope will continue), it's not just AH that JA/BO backup, it's also Demski.  Either of these guys could turn out to be the next AH or ND.  And I'm sure these kids know they can learn a lot behind them.  It's good to have depth.

I think the only all-NAT-RB schemes in the league is ours (AH) and HAMs (STE, which didn't work out due to injury).  I thought I got a hint another team was trying to go NAT-RB for 2020?  Which one was hiring some good NAT RB talent again?

Anyhow, if a team doesn't commit to the NAT-RB scheme, there's not much point paying non-ELC NATs to sit and do nothing.  Kind of like LaFra in SSK.  Litre was an interesting exception in 2019.  Might CGY be trying to go NAT RB again?  But they'd need someone better than Litre in the interim.

Very good signing. I'd like to see both Augustine and Oliveria get some meaningful game reps over and beyond injury replacement. Reducing the workload on AH when possible is not the worst idea. It also helps the development curve for the younger players.

Augustine obviously likes it here and why not, coming off of a Cup win..Signals to me that we will retain a lot more valuable pieces for another run at the big prize...Solid signing

Augustine's a good NI backup, so it's a depth signing.

I agree about cutting the number of carries for Harris...longevity is critical...
Let Augustine and Brady O get more reps to spell off Harris...

Rhetorical statement: I'm not sure how well either of Oliveria or Augustine block at the moment. However if they are good blockers ( or can be developed ) in that capacity, they could prove productive in a FB blocking option role as well.

Both are good on ST's as is Miller who is too valuable in that role to not be on the roster.

What I'm thinking is that if the blocking is as good as Miller or Rush in particular, we might see the occasional 2 RB set. Rush is never going to be on offensive weapon. Miller gets a few offensive plays each season.

OTOH, a Canadian RB that can also block would give the offense more options that the opposition defense has to worry about.

Oliveria is the same weight but shorter than Rush and likely faster on ST's.

Anyone know how well Oliveria, Augustine and Rush block?

correct as they appeared that way in person as Brady is shorter but is a real stocky guy. Rush is more slight and a tad taller.

A good signing. Harris is not getting any younger and its good to know we have solid players behind him when he decides to call it a career.Harris is continuing to play well but at sometime his age will catch up.Father time is undefeated.

Apparently you didn't watch his performance when Harris couldn't play. Today's back up might be tomorrow's starter.

I did watch his performance when Harris served his suspension. Augustine won't replace Harris unless Harris is injured or out for some other reason. Oliveria may even take Augustine's roster spot. Good depth signing, but nothing to get overly excited about.

Augustine isn't going to start and neither is Oliviera but they can both be rotated in. Also like I've said before you can never have too many Canadians as injuries do happen. We'll never know for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if LaPo would have loved to get him in FA.

Good point. Backups are basically never needed so we shouldn?t even care if we have good ones. Not important in the CFL.

Harris isn't going to last forever albeit since coming to the Bombers he has been progressively getting better and defying all the skeptics.    We have solid depth at RB and they're all Canadian....something not many teams have and it helps ratio wise!

What you said is that signing a backup is nothing to get excited about, but I'm arguing that having a competent Nat backup is something to get excited about for reasons listed (via sarcasm).

Nope. I said I'm not that excited about signing a backup. I'm not suggesting that anyone else shouldn't be excited.

You're making up sarcastic claptrap.

If you don't have quality back ups then a team is not going to be successful. Injuries will happen to every team.

Signing quality back ups IS something to be excited about.

Ive see this show with you before.

That's the same bull that people often say. Not true 99% of the time, including this one.

I like Augustine, but no team is going to sign him as their starting RB. His choice was backup with us or backup with someone else. Likely not a hard guy to sign.

You want to get excited... great. You want everyone get as excited as you... grow up.

trigger warning

If you can't get it up for signing a back up that's your prerogative then I guess, even if the reasons for it being discussion-worthy are pretty clear I thought. You know the CFL very well so I am surprised you're thinking this way. Then again, it is a contrarian viewpoint so I guess I'm not actually surprised.

Getting it up is a pretty creepy way of putting it.

My excitement level is different for different levels of players. Difference makers, then starters, then rotation guys, then special teamers/backups. Age and injury issues also come into it.

Sorry, I meant a physical shop?  If he's running a physical store-front that employs staff and relies on customers walking in the door that's quite a commitment as opposed to being the sole employee working out of his home.  If his business is going well it could be one of the reasons he chose to re-sign with the Bombers rather than trying his luck elsewhere.

He does not have a physical shop.

He has a website and creates plan and offers physical training services.

I think Augustine has all the tools to be starting tailback in this league. Sure, the sample size we saw is small but I liked what I saw from him this past season when he took over starting tailback duties. Strong N-S runner, agile, capable blocker, and good hands. He also seems to fit the mould of what this regime looks for in a player.

I think his ceiling has yet to be realized and I'm glad he'll be back here for 2020 and 2021.

You can either go online or you can do a face to face. We meet once every 4 weeks and it's always at the same location which is a gym.
