You roll with Zach until the dynasty is over.  Period.

However, and this will never happen, if Zach has a 1st half like today, you yank him for a few series for Dru.  Don't tell Dru this is an option... he plays better thinking he's the backup and won't play, and when he gets B-team reps in practice.

We have to be willing to yank Zach when he's not seeing it!!

Dru has not been as good as Zach this season, unfortunately. Him shredding some no names doesn't change that.

No-names trying to play way off the REC in prevent-D just trying not to get hurt in the 4th Q before their big playoff game.

Plus, I think Rourke & Lions want revenge on us for the times we whipped their butts in the post-season, eliminating them, and making Rourke cry.

Zach did nothing against the no names bad passes , bad decisions start Brown. Besides Zach is done too many injuries and lacks arm strength. He made bad decisions last week against the elks. I love what he did in the past but we have to move on. We are in tough to win the grey cup, let's see what Brown does. We made the playoffs , thank God.

This is a dumb take.  He couldn't even compete with a 2nd stringer BC defence.

We all bashed & joked about BC's "B-team" tonight, but to be honest BC started 90% of their starting D.  They probably switched to the backups (where available) pretty quickly, ya, but even those were the normal backups, not the PR squad.

Zach was basically throwing against their normal D in H1.  Dru was having it easier when the front 7 were backups.  Betts didn't do much then, for instance, and Cherry being in shows the real starter Burke was out, etc.

Elgersma is not going to cut it IMO, he isn't a CFL QB. He has a great attitude and work ethic but he is not a Nathan Rourke. His time in the NFL was what he wanted. He missed a year of experience he could if had in the CFL.

So if Zach was playing against their '90% D' and did nothing why would we want to start him in the playoff matchup?

a) Zach knows the playoffs better than anyone

b) Dru will throw 4 INTs.  Nothing + hopefully 0 INTs has a better chance of winning than some points + 4 INTs (IMHO).

I still think Zach gives us our best shot, but with a willingness to have him sit 2-3 series if he stinks for 4-5 drives straight.  Get off the field and try to figure out what's not working rather than keep hitting the screw with a hammer.

How quickly everyone forgets how disgusted we all were with Dru after his last few starts where he royally stunk the joint out.

It just dawned on me why we spent so much for Dru and clearly wanted him here for the run this season, even though he's kind of a proven loser in OTT:

2024 GC

If we have Dru in the '24 GC, we likely leave him in (we put Wilson in but yanked him), OR we put Zach back for 1-2 series and put Dru in after the 1st or 2nd INT.

If Dru's there we don't sit there and let a clearly rekt Zach throw INTs all night.  You put in Dru.

This could happen in the WSF, WDF, or GC (ya, I'm dreaming).  And we all know that Dru is pretty darn stellar when coming in late.  Someone look up his record in late relief in WPG, it's over .500, I know that much!  Probably over .750.

Not sure it why it took me so long to figure this out.  This must have been the main thing on their mind -- NOT that he's the heir or anything like that.

Zach is probably banged up with neck and head.  But that doesnt stop Oshea from starting him

Thats ok, but if he sucks right off bat put Dru in.

I would play both of them. Mix it up randomly.

Dru can hit the quick 2nd and medium quick hits better

Zach can scramble better.

Theres potential to have a more dynamic attack with both.

But i bet Oshea just hooks his anchor to Zach for the whole game.

Can Zach even make it through a professional playoff game? How many starts has he been knocked out of this year? Half of them?

The only shot we have is Brown getting hot. Collaros was going to lose the freaking game to the backups.

Just because you want something to be different doesn't mean it is.

Zach is done. He was done a year or two ago. He's certainly done now. If we made smarter decisions with our personnel over the last couple years we'd have won more games.

Dru Brown took the reps at practice today, if Zach was there at all he wasn't in uniform.

they say ribs for Zach.  2 practices he's missed now.

I was going to say start Zach but short leash. Dru looks good off the bench. But I think our hand is forced. I don't want another "finger stitched up" game where it's over before MOS does anything else if he ever does. Has to be Dru.

Neither are great QB's, but only one of them can take a couple of hits and get back up.

A critical game and critical decision. Realistically I think Collaros ends up on the IR and Elgersma is activated.

That result could spell the end of Collaros in 2027. If Brown plays poorly it could also spell the end for him in 2027.

It would be an unfortunate way to end time in Winnipeg.

I think either QB can potentially beat the  Argos if our defence shows up for more than 1 quarter. We haven't seemed to be able to play well for most of an entire game. It's now or never.
Title: Re: Who would you start?

When Zach doesn't practice day one, he doesn't start, so I guess that question is answered.

The question becomes, does Zach dress?  If he does, where on the DC is he?  Is Perkins SY/#2, and Zach an only in emergency #3?

Or do they let a Zach who isn't healthy enough to start take the #2 role?

In either case, with the season on the line, how long is Dru's leash?  Zach's was obviously far too long last game.  Can we learn from this?  It was only an illegal RTP hit that saved our season from MOS letting Zach waste a great D effort.
Title: Re: Who would you start?
Post by: Jesse on October 29, 2026, 02:46:27 PM
Recent history tells us that if Zach isn't practicing, he is incapable of playing.

MOS history tells us he'll trot out his guys in the play-offs/Grey Cup on one leg without practicing becaus ethey deserve the shot.

Honestly, last week notwithstanding, neither QB has looked better than the other at any point over the season. But, as TBurg said, only one can take a hit and keep on playing.

Given how our season has gone, we need to go high risk/reward. And even though I think Brown has a low floor, if he's getting the ball out quick he may have the highest ceiling right now.

Yeah, I don't see how anyone can dig their feet in the sand and push too hard one way or another on this. Neither are particularly good.

With Zach you have the experience, but you have the injury possibility (probability). With Dru you have largely underachievement/non-starting QB performance but also have the potential for a showing like we saw in the BC second half. Oh, and yeah, the greater probability of actually finishing the game.

I would be extremely happy if we started Zach and he showed his 2022ish form and finished the game. I would also be extremely happy if we started Dru and he played 60 minutes like he did in the last game. Neither of those scenarios are realistic, unfortunately.

What I am wondering is if million dollar Kelly is going to be showing the world he deserves his new contract. We are seriously out gunned at the QB position no matter what we do. It would be nice to win the turn over battle, that would give us a chance.
Title: Re: Who would you start?

Who ever we start we need to game plan better for 2nd and more than 5.
Staying in the pocket has proved disastrous more often than not. Our interior line gets bulldozed and both qbs are sitting ducks. Do we have hot routes?
Argos d has relied on rush all year and Picket is particularly dangerous, if we cant negate this our d will be on field all game

Not that they have any choice but it's time to invest their road apples in Brown for the playoffs and next season, cause it's unlikely anyone better will be available. If they let him walk away Sask. or CGY would grab him before you could blink.

Brown has enough talent and brain power to make the team competitive with the second tier.  If they team him up with a great OC he might be able to advance beyond that level like Matt Nichols did, as long as the rest of the defence can also raise their level of consistency and become a dominant force.  Otherwise they remain a 2nd tier team next season fighting it out for 3rd best in the West.

Condell has a bigger relationship to Dru than Zach or Bryce.

How much that matters with MOS as coach, who knows.

It would be nice to have QB's get snaps based on merit.

Who??  Neither can take a hit.  Little bumps & booboos took Dru out of tons of games in OTT.  Here's the 3 "glassiest" QBs in the league: Zach, Dru, Trevor.

Have you seen Dru compared to Zach in terms of stature and beef?  Dru's a scrawn.  Zach at least tried to beef up 2 seasons ago, and it's mostly still there.

Elgs will be totally useless.  So no matter what's going on with Zach you dress him.  Plus, you need to send a signal to TOR that they need to waste time planning for Zach.

Zacn & Dru are different beasts in terms of where they like to throw.  Need to mess with TOR's plans.

If it was me, I'd even go so far as to just plain lie as to who is listed as #1.

I feel if Elgersma comes out throwing bombs he could put some points up. Yes, he's not ready to start but coming off the bench the arm alone has to make the Argos respect him. Run Brady, throw deep, repeat.

You CANNOT dress Zach if he cannot play. We saw that movie already in a Grey Cup. Beyond ugly.

I know guys are crapping on him, but I'll take ZC8 experience anyday over pick 6 Brown. Brown has proven over and over he can't read a defense and constantly throws into coverage for picks...didn't do that vs the no names as they were useless. Stick with Collaros, he has taken us on a 5 year journey never to be repeated in these parts. I have zero faith  in Brown and had a good laugh at the suggestion of Elgersma, oh boy would that be disasterous. That guy can't even handle a snap from centre without fumbling it and is soooooo over his head it isn't even funny.

Quantify this theory, how many 'bombs' has Elgersma completed....ever...in a football game. From what I've seen the guy is brutal. What has he ever accomplished on the football field. If we're in desparate need for a Qb, put in Perkins who is a former UFL MVP, Elgersma couldn't get his paperwork in order to get a crack at the UFL or at least that's line we've been told. I think he simply wasn't worth the effort so nobody was in a hurry to get his paperwork in order.

Not saying I WANT to see him but if we had to he has the strongest arm on the Bombers by far. And we have the receivers to throw to.

What is Perkins? A Nealon Green? He's on the team because he can run the short yardage very well. If he couldn't do that then he would not be on the team at all.

Anyway, the point appears to moot as Zach got in a limited practice. He's bound to be on the roster.

I feel they are trying to trick the Argos and ZC will start.  It's all out in the press and everyone thinks Dru will start..and then we trot out ZC and the Argos are prepared for Dru..  Having said that, if we do that keep ZC on a short leash to not hurt him further and in case he has an iffy game..and have Dru come in if needed.  Dru also needs the reps more than Zach so it's good he's getting them.

You may have missed my point.  If they prepare defensively all week for Dru from the media reports, and we trot out Zach, they will be taken by surprise.  It may not happen, but it may since ZC is practing a bit now. That's what I'm saying. Time will tell.

its not a bad plan to force Argos to have to prepare for two qbs, even ifs it not a big deal. Always look for any advantage.
Now if we trotted out a running qb such as Perkins that would really confuse em.
But seriously, Zac's playoff performance against Toronto hasn't been great, much like last game he gets happy feet and seems to lack the confidence he normally has

I'm not sure there is a different plan for either QB. Shutting down Brady and forcing either QB to do something usually works for teams.

I didn't miss it, I just don't believe it has significant merit. The game plan will be the same. What varies is execution.

Don't you think we'll have given some preparation in case Arbuckle comes into the game for a series or due to injury?

Perkins did not come here to run SY, he does it because the team called on him to do it, and he does it very well.

I disagree, they were sticking it to us the entire game. Remember all those backups are in there to make a statement to make the team next year. Sometimes I would be more worried about unknown backups that you can't plan against.

I thought Elgersma showed better than Perkins in the pre-season games, when they forced Perkins to use his arm instead of running on every play he didn't do well.  Totally understandable as the transition to the CFL game is a big leap for any American QB in his first season, hopefully they bring him back next year and we get to see if he has made any progress.

Quote from: BLUEBOMBER on October 30, 2026, 04:36:26 AMWhy does Collaros seem to get injured every game or two? I doubt Collaros can stay in the whole game but he is our best chance. Brown only played well because B.C. Lions didn't want or need to win the last game.

Did you see how the BC player landed on him? I don't know many who wouldn't have been injured.
