Title: Calgary @ Winnipeg pre-game thread
Post by: Pigskin on July 20, 2026, 03:47:53 AM
This is a very short week for the Bombers. Probably 1 practice. The team will have to play much better against Calgary. Really need to get out to a better start and stop taking so many stupid penalties.

Yeah, there is one closed practice on Wednesday. The schedule for this week was released with last week's.

VAJ will rip this designed defence a new hole if they continue to leave WRs wide open all over the field.
Run D has improved but remains inconsistent.
Our receivers need to learn to not drop EZ throws.
Brady for sure looks nicked up. Other than Ike we really got nothing unless we plug Demski into the RB position.
These brutal penalties and turnovers plague us. Can't do it against these guys.

Maybe not starting the game till 5mins left in the first half will help to.

I wonder if Peterson gets added to the AR for the next game to provide some different looks on offence.  Whether BO is nicked or not, it might be worthwhile.

I would take Peterson + Chris-Ike for a game just for an A+B comparison. Brady looked awful in Ottawa. He went from the slowest starting running back in the league to a full back this season. He scares nobody and guarantees stacked boxes all game. Time to be honest about it if you're O'Shea and start making decisions for the team instead of the player.

It's not as black and white as that but you make a fair assessment on his skill set. He's never been a RB that is going to scare you getting to the edge like a Rankin for example.

I see an on going issue with OL and predictability of play calling being part of the solution.

Having a less than stellar receiving corps is also part of the issue. That allows the front 7 to crowd the LOS.

Ottawa does not have a good defence and they had to replace 3 starters on defence for this game. That included their MLB and they were still able to shut down our run game. That's not a good sign.

Getting behind early meant more passes necessary and our run game out the window. We see that often in games this year.

Ok, it's a 2 practice week. I didn't see any injuries that will result in necessary changes. OTOH, I do believe we'll have to make decisions on players on 6 game IR that are eligible to return.

After losing Lawson to the 6 game IR IMO it's seems adding Schmekel would be high on my list of additions. There isn't anyone I want to see come off the roster on the DL so I'd guess Bouliane would be the one to be moved back to PR.

Clercius would be my next choice to add back. I think he's a better / bigger blocker and a bigger receiving target. I'd switch him in for Cobb. Corcoran is not exactly a productive receiver either, so flip a coin.

A win against Calgary on Friday will go a long ways in clinching a playoff spot. Bombers would be up three games on them and have the season series. BC had lost Rourke for the immediate future and did not look good with their backup. Locking up a playoff spot early would go a long way in our quest for another Grey Cup.

The Stamps defence is not great but they can score a lot of points. Brown showed improvement as the game progressed yesterday but it's another short week.

Our defence needs to tighten up because a hot VAJ can beat us deep or short.

It's a winnable game for the Bombers but we have to eliminate those mental mistakes taking penalties. No more freebies in that regard or turnovers etc.

Show up at the start of the game. No slow start again.

Condell is failing to diversify the running attack using all the resources available, the previous game he mixed in a fair amount of jet sweeps using Pokey which seemed to work well, yesterday we may have seen one such play using Tim White? Nothing from Demski or Pokey, and MCI only touches the ball when Brady is temporarily unavailable.

It doesn't hurt to mix it up and give teams more variations and players to worry about, notice Rankin is given a breather after making big plays and Javon Leake steps in to show what he can do, this is the better approach, it creates friendly competition and helps diversify the attack.  Brady never leaves the field, if he's not in the backfield he's lining up as a wideout receiver, which surely can't be the best option for that role.

Matthew Peterson is wasting his career in Wpg, they went out and traded for him but at the same time they're telling him we can't think of any possible way to make use of your talent, enjoy the crappy wage the PR provides you and we'll call if we need you.  MCI is getting paid better but he's basically filling the role Mike Miller used to occupy, help out on ST's and act as an emergency backup in case something bad happens to Brady.  Park your skills and ambition by the door when you enter the dressing room, this is Brady's team.

No Brady - our QB likely gets killed a few more times - he does pick up a number of rushers (he misses some but so do 0-linemen)

Our defence, looks really good at pressuring and throwing off Kelly, but struggled with Mair. I am not sure why it seemed that way, but hopefully we can limit VAJ, like we limited Kelly.

BO did miss a practice, so he may not be 100%, but he needs to see the ball more, heck that was mostly a bad game by him and what he still averaged 4.8yards believe.....it might be "boring" but Brady churning out tough yards does two very key things to beat Cal. slows down that really, really good d-line they have and keeps VAJ off the field.

I would like to see us revert back toa ball/clock control offence.

Pokey had coverages beat a few times, but he and Brown were not in sync last game, he was something like 6 of 14 completions.....Brown and Pokey need to get back on the same page, I think the chemistry is getting there for those two.

Neild needs to shake off last game, and hits the jugs machine.

Maybe I am wrong but it seemed Kelly was playing deeper and Kramdi was playing closer to the LOS....It seemed to be working what they were both doing. I would like to see us build off that against Calgary.

I think we can win, home crowd helps...but it won't be easy, and we can not make mistakes, bad penalties, out of bound kicks, turnovers on downs, throwing the ball to the wrong team, these all need to be minimized, combine the controllable mistakes with winning time of possession and I think we have a great chance to win....

IR reports suggested BO was limited due to a hip issue, so he's not 100%. It may have been somewhat limiting but adjusting to a new QB didn't help either.

He doesn't need to be put on the 1 game IR but getting Peterson on the roster is a mathematical issue on who to take off. OTOH, we don't want BO to further risk additional injury issues. Ultimately isn't that we have players on the PR?

Maybe but I'd like to see it. You don't roster a running back to block. He needs to generate a running game first and pass pro second. And the more effective our running game the more the defensive line has to wait a half step.

I don't agree with this move.  Brady will be fine.  Adds little and would take another more impactful and needed player off the roster.  We have others options to run the rock already on the AR.

Disagree with the idea.  Overstated on the negative about Brady.  He will start to cook, give him time.  Also likely needs to get healthy.  Brady has been the best back in the league for a long time and that won't change anytime soon.  Yes a slow start and yes there are some great backs this year and there was last year.  Please provide us with data or facts that back up your slowest RB in the league.  I don't buy that.  Yes he isn't a twitch back but he has many other gifts.  Comparing him to a full back is not true.  He has scared people his entire career and will continue to do so.  Yes they stack the box on him, only way to stop the run.  Wow.

All that said is Brady is not at least 75% sit him.

Come fall Bbb will be in full force and I'll get the microwave ready for turbo defrost.

Brady >> Peterson but I do like both

I think this is Brady's team for years yet (pending health)

Knowing when to modify a roster due to any player's limitations is a judgment call. Your point is that it might also require moving another player off the roster to accommodate that is relevant, but the nature of the roster size and ratio.

In this particular game we could have left Bouliane off the roster and added Peterson.  We have lots of ST players and little back up at RB.

We don't know the exact extent to BO's injury but he was clearly not having a great game. How much of that was due to any limitation is less clear. Ottawa defence had something to say about that.

Players play with injuries all the time.

However backing the 3 legged horse ( injured ) over a healthy horse in a race isn't always the best option.

It doesn't matter if BO is 100% later in the season, what mattered was what he could do yesterday. The result was not good for most of the game. Normally that generates a loss for the Bombers because he's our spark plug.

In a different example I wonder if Collaros would have played if we didn't have Brown on the roster. These decisions often fall on could have versus shouldn't have.

The negative comments about BO were reasonable to question. I might add he's no longer the best RB in the CFL and has been more prone to injury. RB careers are generally short in any league.

Rankin, Theis and Mills may all be better overall than BO at this point. He's still an excellent player but we're seeing new blood rise to the top.

I would just like to see the difference at this point and if it gives Brady a week to get healthy that's probably a bonus. I'm not sure if it would look better, but I think it might especially if we can get some of the zone running plays going and stretch out the field horizontally. We're trying our best to do that through sweeps, receiver hitches and stuff but it's a bit like fighting the symptoms instead of the virus itself. One thing is for sure, it couldn't have gone much worse for the running game than yesterday and if Brady isn't having a good day in the A or B gap he's all out of options.

Yes, a big win by the Bombers this week would be nice. Bombers would be 5-2, and Calgary 2-5. And, we would win the season head to head match up. But, the boys must play better then they did in Ottawa. I also agree that if BO20 is injured, rest him.

If Brady is hurt/ailing, then sit him until he's 100%< we're sitting Collaros, we can sit Brady. Peterson will do just fine, if i recall last year he lit it up when he got the chance, Brady was suuuuuper slow vs Ottawa, if he plays hurt, its just a matter of time until he gets seriously hurt. Nobody ever won anything in July, think long term, make the right call.

VAJ has been very hot/cold this season, just like seasons past. Strangely, so has the team. And I think they try way harder at home. All of these can work in our favor.

VAJ is a slinger, and our D can do well against those. We sucked against Maier because him and Dinwiddie are dink and dunk meisters.

Dickenson the Greater is impatient, just like his qb. They will have trouble if our D is on point.

CGYs vaunted DL did diddly squat in their last game. Hopefully we study that film and take notes.

Totally winnable game for us. I'd prefer Zach, but I bet it's dru . Just hope his many almost-ints stay that way. Giving the ball away will guarantee a loss.

With Collaros being moved to the 6 game IR, it most certainly will be Brown starting at QB. He can win this game.

I am waiting to see if we activate some of the players off the 6 game IR for this game. Some fresh legs won't hurt.

This will be an interesting game.

We've been more inconsistent as a team than I can remember under O'Shea, both week to week and quarter to quarter.

Calgary is a lot better than a 2-4 win team and it's as close to a must win game as there can be in July considering we took the first one and the season series is on the line. You can't go 3.5 back from their perspective.

One of those games I literally have no idea what to expect. A blow out in either direction wouldn't surprise me much, nether would a close game.

The suggestion to take a healthy or nearly healthy BO off for Peterson is a non starter for me.  Resting your star sure.  The talk of BO's decline is premature imo.  I heard this story with Harris near the end, he proved many including you wrong.  BO is at an inflection point.  Needs to continue his strong play which is mostly impacted by his ability to be healthy, the play of our OL and how balanced our O is.  All that said I am not sure BO will have the longevity that Harris did but time will tell.  I knew Harris could cook right to the end but at time he even surprised me, even though I pump his tires hard and late.  We are in incredible shape if BO can play a few more years at a high level.  It's what I expect to happen.

Agree with most but Brady can run outside on occasion just like Harris did late stage.  Both had the hands to catch outside.  His value as a blocker can be stated too much.  That said, agree with most, if nicked he should fix his knickers LOL.  I am always a fan of resting guys if it means longevity later in the season.  Fine line as sometimes the players push a bit too hard.  Will have to see what happens here.  Practice might tell us something but with limited action this week likely just a nothing burger of info.  Need a locker room spy, can someone dress up as a reporter or get a media pass LOL.

My worry is chasing VAJ and Mills all over the field on 4 days rest. Add to that it was a busier than normal game for the defense. IF Peterson is healthier he should play, the fresh legs would help.

We only know he's nicked but how much is the issue. I don't think anyone is suggesting to take him off. However adding in Peterson and letting him take a few reps isn't the worst idea.

I guess we'll see how productive BO is this week. It's not all on him but if he struggles that will prove our point that he may have needed a break.

The entire Bomber team needs to play better against Calgary who lost a close one to the Als who are on a roll.   VAJ is a more dangerous QB because of his running ability plus Calgary has an awesome front 7.   Mills is a very underrated RB and can hurt you with his power and has more speed than Brady.
We can't take that many dumb penalties against them or we will be in trouble.   Calgary always play us hard and we won the last game with them on a walk off field goal.....Dru needs to be sharper as the Calgary D will be tougher and he was lucky against Ottawa who dropped 4 potential picks.
A win against them at home will give us the series against them which could be a huge factor down the stretch.

Agree all but would like to point out SirBnG suggested BO be replaced by Peterson and MCI and he was a little over critical of BO imo.

Adding Peterson imo is an option if BO can't go.  I wouldn't bother otherwise.  If BO needs a break run it with MCI, Demski or speed sweep. Daniels on a screen.  I think the guy that comes off for Peterson wouldn't be worth it for a few reps.  That said does he play teams? Can he block well?

I sure hope he is ok, if not give him rest as most suggest.  That said BO at 75% > most.  We shall see.  Resting one game is often a good move.  If hurt don't want to make it worse!

Some good debate all.

Side note, thunder crackers in the forecast, sure hope we don't delay.  With BO cooking though, a wet game might help us if he is 100%.

Bouliane is the one most likely to come off the AR. He's only played 2 games. Chances are he gets bumped by a Canadian coming off the 6 game IR this week.

Smeckle must be getting close as well. Im not worried about our defense its been improving week to week, its Calgary's dline that's probably the most talented in the league. Orimolade and Hicks will put a lot of pressure on Bryant, and Wallace is clearly outmatched by Hutchings.

Mills just had his best game this season.  I don't really care the stats, though they probably back it up: it was the first game he looked more like the steamroller Mills we know.  He was basically unstoppable and making all the tough YAFCs, and lots of 7+ runs.

Sucks that he decides to start finding mojo right before we play them.  But I think we'll do ok making sure he doesn't go full-Rankin on us.  I would be worried about injuries, though, as he's a lot of weight plowing downhill.  Best to sic Griffin & Jones on him, rather than Kyrie & Kramdi (or Kelly!).

What is this talk?  If we're to win this game, it'll likely be on Brady's back. 1 big game and he's right back in contention with Rankin & Mills.
The game plan needs to be better, Brown needs to be better, and we need to get that ground & pound going.

I know you're just talking about rushing yards, but Rankin is leading the league in yards from scrimmage by a fairly significant margin, getting 144 yards/game.

Mills isn't within 200 yards of him and Brady isn't within 300. In only 6 games.

The decline of BO by some is WAY overstated.  Agree all.  That said, I don't think anyone can touch Rankin this year unless he gets hurt.

This teams success is based on four factors (in order):
1. OL
2. RB
3. QB
4. DL

only worried slightly abut #1 but I think they will come around, the gel time I predicted was required but mostly due to change on the AR for injuries and required leave

Criticism was clearly justified last year.

This year, the defense has changed. I think its partly better players on the D-line (Ceresna is a huge updrade over Jake Thomas, Fletcher and Reese look good), and partly an apparent change in defensive philosophy where we are going harder after QB pressure. If you watch Willie this year, he is being more agressive about trying to get to the QB.

Looks like three Bombers are ready to come off the 6-game injured list.

DT Tanner Schmekel, REC Kevens Clercius, LB Lane Novak and DB Ethan Ball have all been on for 6 games  already.

We're also playing a lot more 4-3(than last year) and the last couple games we've also been a little more willing to allow our defensive lineman to go make plays instead of the the collapse and contain strategy Younger has emphasized to this point and for sure through last year. Cersena helps but Willie (and others) seem to be allowed to go attack on more plays which is the most helpful.

The interceptions will come if we can continue to get pressure and Younger doesn't try so hard to big brain his way to 36 layers of zone coverage all the time. As a defensive back is also takes time to adjust and trust that you don't need to cover 46 moves every play and that the ball is going to come out on time in more cases. The guys that have played in this system last year are used to outrageously long cover clocks and you can't really just flip a switch on that.

Yes people were annoyed about it last season, but

I've seen  the same criticism this season. Quite often.

Along with other stuff, criticisms of Kramdi, and Jones for example.

It's not a flashy defence  and sometimes there are bumps and mistakes, guys have a bad game,  but it's good, and it has been for years.

I don't have any problem with criticizing the team....its fun, interesting, and often accurate, but it should be based on reality.

And you're usually the first guy to stick up for the team.

This year we have the same schemes for the most part

We upgraded our DL

Jake >> Vaughter which makes Willie better thus more sacks

Last year yes
This year no
Room went a little quiet after some early rumblings about how we approach providing pressure

Make some good points

Would be fun to compare our QB pressures, blitz numbers, knock downs and sacks to fully compare the two seasons, sacks are only part of the equation

Willie isn't getting double team as much because our collective DL > last year

Willie had a good year last year but looks great this year, like he is shooting out of a cannon

The talk of his decline is really overstated imo
His sack number are down but his pressures were near the top last time I seen the numbers, which I would love an update on as tsn ran this about a year ago, Willie was #3 league wide

Why did we we upgrade our DL?

Why is Willie the only returning starter? Why did we spend so much on Ceresna? Why did MOS convince Jake to transition to coaching? Why did we go with an all-american DL last game? Why are we using 7-8 DL this year instead of 5-6 the last two years?

That's a lot of changes for something that wasn't broke.

Trying to start an argument when there wasn't one presented.

My original point was that a few suggested that we didn't value or prioritize sacks which wasn't true.

But I'll bite.  We had some turn over on the DL due to moving on from players and new faces stepping up or developing.  Lawson started at times last year unless I'm mistaken or did he only rotate?

We signed Ceresna over retaining Vaughters because he was a little better.  Jake Thomas was at the end of his career and it was a natural transition.  All American DL was due to injuries.  Won't be like that all the time and we rotate so much.  Slightly more DL this year as talent is better than in the past.  We have deployed a similar defensive roster as last year, heavy on the LBs.  Only 7 DL all year.  Big change is Ayers on depth charge as LB.

I have disagreed with many that something was or is broken with this defense.  Yes the DL has under preformed a bit but this year its talent is shining on a similar defensive system.  Our DL is better than in the past and as we get healthy and our young guns develop it will only get stronger.  They are executing well on a well coached team.  Jake is one of the best in the business and it has brought us to a new level by allowing Willie to shine again.  I put credit to the players, as Dave would say, the players play.  And boy are they playing well.

Don't agree with much you are implying.

What he's implying in a far nicer way than I will is you spent all last year telling us the defensive line was the world's best back then too, remember? And the year before that. And this year it's super duper awesome and everyone should be sorry they said it wasn't before because it's still so awesome. All without a modicum of technical explanation for why you think so. It just is because beast mode best ever.

For the record, the defense has been better the last few games but better is relative to wholly unacceptable in the first few weeks and with the caveat that you're finger waving your told-ya-so's after just giving up 420 yards to freaking Ottawa.

But that doesn't matter because they're still so super duper super awesome.

Fake news, I never said our DL was the best ever last year.  No I don't remember because it didn't happen lol.  I defended Thomas last year, liked Vaughters and called Willie what he is, one of best ever.  Nice try.  The previous year I can't remember what exactly what I stated about the DL but I think you are exaggerating.

I never claimed this year DL awesome.  Fake news x2. I liked our off season moves.  I have commented on our good and bad games.  I explain my thoughts in detail about who I like and why.  Sorry your take here is simply not true. You constantly paint me as a simply a positron on here which isn't true and no you are not correct my posts have way more detail and substance than you suggest.  It doesn't add to the discussion and is your fall back when you have nothing to counter.  It's getting really repetitive but kind of entertaining at the same time as its so predictable.  But please stop doing that.

I never said our defense is awesome this year, fake news x3.

I have been critical of our defense this year like many.  I thought on paper looked good and was worried about Kramdi at FS but that is starting to work out.  Yes the defense has been better as of late.  I was a little worried about our new corner but he has been just awesome.

I pointed out after seeing the sack numbers that indeed we both value and prioritize sacks, which is a factual rebuttal of what you claimed was true previously.  No told you so.  I presented a counter argument to your position previously and now again.  You can lead the league in sacks unless you value and prioritize them.  That's the facts.  Today my comments didn't specifically mention the level play of the DL or how good I thought it was.

For someone that often tells me to use facts in my arguments you are sure presented exactly none here.

Your post simply is non factual and trying to throw shade against me, which I have repeatedly asked you to stop doing.  The tone of your post is not welcome or needed.  You are simply trying to get a rise out of me with little to no substance in your counter argument because you have none.  So just to be clear we are still not valuing or prioritizing sacks? That was my point of my original post.

Please comb the forum and prove me wrong to support what you claim I have posted, you are simply posting things that I never said and attempting to spread fake news about me.  Its unfortunate you continue to do so.  I prefer facts.

I use the term beast when I praise a player for having a strong game or usually due to the strong physical nature of their play.  Razzing me in your reference to that term is a real stretch.

The season started out bad, some of the forum went full negative mode and I stayed the course, which is my hallmark.  Patience paid off the DL.  Let's see if their strength can help this D take a the next step.

I see a club with an improving D, great special teams and an offense that needs better playing calling, a more consistent run game, better play by the OL and a QB that needs to gel with his new surroundings.  I remain cautiously optimistic about the club and am excited we are getting healthy.

Ceresna and Vaughters play different positions. Devin Adams was the best pass-rushing DT we had last year and rode the bench. This year we have Ceresna who can rush the passer from the interior (and play DE when needed) and then some rookies at DE. It's not hard to see that last year (and the year prior as well) the team wanted DTs who plugged vs. the run and offered less in the pass rush department. Do I have some issues with that? Sure. But it's what they did. Ceresna is the guy they've needed the past couple years. Someone who pushes the A and B gap and gets home.

Ya, I think we luck out.  Same-week AR is somewhat rare, but not unheard of.

That said, he's not as good as Eric Rogers.  And as a super big guy, he's prone to injury.  Hands are suspect, too.  He's more about beef and out-heighting you.  He may be used mostly as a red zone guy -- just like Rogers was.

The thing that really hurts, though, is he's a NAT, right?  Talk about a ratio buster.

I don't think he was being double-teamed as much as is the narrative. Willie did not play well last year and too often went looking for the knockdown instead of trying to rush the passer. He's turned the switch back on a little bit and is serving him well.

That said, the defense still needs to keep improving. This is far from a top performing unit, especially with the offense underperforming.

Willie was average last year which would be verified on his pressure numbers, which I don't have, his looks great this year due to a better DL imo

Knock downs are impactful plays

He is getting doubled less now imo, would be awesome if we had stats on that

Pro Football Focus (PFF) credited Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Willie Jefferson with 37 total quarterback pressures during the 2025 CFL regular season.Willie Jefferson's 2025 Performance OverviewPressure Consistency: He averaged 2.2 pressures per game across 17 games. This marked a notable statistical drop from his 2022–2024 average of 3.8 pressures per game.Disruptive Impact: Despite recording a career-low 3 sacks, he heavily disrupted passing lanes by leading the league with a career-high 16 pass knockdowns.2026 Resurgence: Jefferson has rebounded sharply early in the 2026 season, racking up 21 pressures through just his first four games.

Above not fact checked but like we know Willie on fire, so much for his so called decline, best in the biz baby (career)

So I claim that Willie was less effective as a pass rusher and went looking for the knockdown and you post the PFF numbers that say his pass rush effectiveness was cut in half last year while leading the league in knockdowns.

Why are you even arguing at this point?

Just having a discussion here, not everything is an argument.  You made some good points and so did I.

I believe people tend to be a little to sack focused and the stats on the total distributions to the QB needs to be part of the discussion about how effective a DL is.

I was thought I would post some numbers from last year which I wasn't aware of.

Let's continue to all post our opinions and more facts so we can all learn and enjoy this awesome community

I think TSN had total disruptions stat for DL a year or two ago and Willie was near the top.  Going off a bad memory.  I think I posted recently that stat was pressures but I think they summed up all the way a DL impacts on a nice stats graphic.  Sure wish I could recall things better, I should have taken a screen shot lol.
