Title: Injury reserve lists
Post by: Blue In BC on June 24, 2026, 02:45:53 PM
It's been interesting watching how we're using the IR lists. In almost every instance, players go directly to the 6 game IR. Smith was the only player to go to the 1 game IR.

Vanterpool is the 1st player to come off the 6 game and is moved to the reserve list.

I'm not quite sure what the criteria is to choose the reserve list versus moving to the 1 game IR in the case of Vanterpool. The SMS hit would be the same but I think it makes him available for a GTD if needed. I don't think you can do that from the 1 game IR.

Obviously players that have been on the 1 game IR are often there for longer than 1 game. What we're seeing now is that if they can't practice, they may as well be on the 6 game IR until they can ( like Vanterpool ).

What we don't know is the real extent on injuries to players on the 6 game IR. To some degree it's almost like we using that as an extended PR. It costs more in operating costs but not against the SMS.

I think this is a positive change for players because they get full paychecks.

We'll have to see if and when others are activated and what the timing is in relation to new injuries.

I think the CFL had a discussion in the off season about managing these lists and we're seeing the results of those discussions now.  Last season the Bombers misdiagnosed some recovery times and paid a direct price when they had to put injured players on the 6 game anyway after a couple of games on the 1 game, delaying their return or costing more money. Now they're automatically throwing everyone on the 6 game and pulling them off when ready to return, maybe the league changed the rules around so this is no longer penalized?

The only penalty would be that coming off early gets charged SMS. So no real penalty if players need to be on the 6 game earlier and longer.

Ya, there was never any "penalty" of using the 6G for everything, SMS-wise, compared to the 1G.  The cost would be the same as 1G for 3 games vs 6G for 3 games.  And you get the SMS "bonus" if they stay on for 6.

There is no "punishment" (SMS "fine" or something) for coming off the 6G early above and beyond what the player would have cost on the 1G.

So in that sense there is zero change from prior years.  And yet we do see more teams apparently using the 6G more, 1G less, and barely using the RR.  I can't explain it.  A lot of us have been yelling we should have been using the 6G all along.

The only downside to 6G is they can't practice until the 5th missed game.  What's the rule regarding 1GIR practicing?  And if we move someone from 6G to 1G can they practice that week or have to wait until the next?  The practice rules must be lax otherwise we'd see more use of the RR.

You are allowed to practice on the 1 game IR as did Smith this week.
