Title: Official Game Day Thread - Edmonton @Winnipeg, June 25, 2026
Post by: ModAdmin on June 24, 2026, 06:17:27 AM
At least a couple or 3 good stories for the Edmonton/Winnipeg game...

1. the battle between Rankin and Oliviera,

2. Dru Brown returns to Winnipeg,

3. will the Bombers sell out another game (16th straight)

The Bombers report 30,000 plus seats are sold to date.

Ed Tait discusses these topics in his 48-Hour Primer here... (http://"http://"https://www.bluebombers.com/2026/06/23/48-hour-primer-game-3-vs-elks/"")

Although early in the season, it's an important game against a Western rival and to keep pace with the rest of the league.

Bombers should be relatively healthy assuming Nic Demski and Ontaria Wilson are ready to go.

Lots to discuss but in the meantime, Go Bombers Go!

Weatherman keeps waffling on the weather for Thurs.  As of this second, the thunderstorms predicted yesterday should hold off.  If they do, it's perfect temp & weather and I fully expect another sell-out.

Cross your fingers!

Ok, as expected Smith  is back on the R and Clark is moved to the 6 game IR. Vanterpool is moved to the reserve list. Nothing shown for Brown. Maybe there is a 1 week in transit before they have to account for him. However I would think he still collects a pay check.

I expected him to be on the reserve list so maybe it's just a paperwork delay doing that.

We have nobody on the 1 game IR. Vanterpool coming off early means his SMS would be the same if he had been on the 1 game IR. No problem with that.

Huge game against an improved western rival - losing two at home will make Wade's blood boil, just can't happen.  If the defense doesn't show marked improvement then I believe there will be changes in personnel at some spots.  You can't just trot out the "we didn't tackle well" or "we just weren't executing our gaps" message - if that is the case they need to find some players who can tackle.

Personally I think the problems are deeper than that but I am cognizant that it is still early in the season and it can take time to gel as a team....and for whatever reason defenses have kind of sucked across the CFL.

Glad Demski and Wilson are in - hopefully they can last the game and make a difference.

I thought we might consider swapping a DL for Texada this week. It's a question whether more pressure from the DL is better for the secondary, or a better DB than Kelly is better in coverage.

I don't know that either choice was the right answer or wrong. We'll see how this plays out. If the front 7 can stop Rankin then I don't think Fajardo beats us with the passing game.

Big test not just for the players but for the strategy we use.

Defense needs a redemption game in every sense of the term. Get to Fajardo early and that should help, IMO.

Derek Taylor🏈   @DTonOB

Just one depth change for the Bombers for Thursday, despite all the shuffling we saw at practice this week.

OL Micah Vanterpool goes to the reserve roster, back from injury.

New QB Dru Brown isn't listed anywhere yet.

LB Brody Clark to 6-game injured list.

Jaylen Smith returns for Winnipeg Blue Bombers against Elks
by 3Down Staff  June 24, 2026

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have only made one change to their roster ahead of Thursday night's game against the Edmonton Elks. The team issued its official depth chart on Wednesday morning.

Jaylen Smith has been activated from the one-game injured list after sitting out in Week 2 due to a head injury. He recorded one special teams tackle during the team's season-opening win over the Calgary Stampeders in Week 1.

The five-foot-ten, 228-pound defender was a second-round pick in the 2025 CFL Draft out of the University of North Texas. He made three defensive tackles and 22 special teams tackles as a rookie, finishing second on the team and tied for fourth league-wide in special teams tackles.

In a corresponding move, the team has placed Canadian linebacker Brody Clark on the six-game injured list. The rookie out of York University was a non-participant in practice this week due to a thigh injury and was listed as doubtful. The 24-year-old native of Delta, B.C. made three special teams tackles over two regular-season games to start the year.

Dru Brown, who was acquired from the Ottawa Redblacks via trade on Tuesday, will not dress for the game. He is not listed on Winnipeg's official roster, which a team spokesperson indicated is because he remains in transit.

Offensive lineman Micah Vanterpool, who was previously on the six-game injured list, has been moved to the reserve roster. Other players who remain on the six-game injured list include receiver Kevens Clercius, defensive linemen De'Shaan Dixon and Tanner Schmekel, linebackers Lane Novak, Jovan Santos-Knox, and Jaiden Woodbey, and defensive backs Cam Allen and Ethan Ball.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-1) will host the Edmonton Elks (2-0) at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday, June 25 with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT. The Elks are coming off an overtime win over the Montreal Alouettes, while the Blue Bombers were on bye.

The weather forecast in Winnipeg calls for a high of 25 degrees and sun. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on 880 CHED in Edmonton or 680 CJOB in Winnipeg.

Brock Mogensen to replace Nick Anderson for Edmonton Elks
by 3Down Staff  June 24, 2026

The Edmonton Elks will start Brock Mogensen at middle linebacker when they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday night. They released their depth chart on Wednesday.

The native of Farmington, Minn. dressed for 14 regular-season games as a CFL rookie in 2025, making 40 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. Mogensen was a collegiate standout at the University of South Dakota, where he was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Nick Anderson started the team's first two regular-season games at middle linebacker, recording 12 defensive tackles and one special teams tackle. The 26-year-old, who was named All-CFL and the league's Most Outstanding Rookie in 2024, didn't practice this week due to a hamstring injury and has been moved to the six-game injured list.

The Elks have made two other roster changes for Thursday with Carter Kettyle being added to the active roster in place of Francis Bemiy, and Bradley Hladik taking over long-snapping duties from Luke Burton-Krahn.

Kettyle
was the team's third-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft out of the University of Alberta. The 22-year-old native of Grande Prairie, Alta. caught 101 passes for 1,695 yards and 17 touchdowns over 25 collegiate games with the Golden Bears, earning a first-team U Sports All-Canadian selection in 2025. He will dress in a depth role behind Kaion Julien-Grant.

Hladik spent the first two games of the regular-season on Edmonton's practice roster. Burton-Krahn has been moved to the six-game injured list with an Achilles injury.

Others still on Edmonton's six-game injured list include offensive linemen Brett Boyko and Coulter Woodmansey, defensive linemen Brandon Barlow, Silas Hubert, and Darien Newell, linebacker Eteva Mauga-Clements, and defensive backs Royce Metchie and Benjamin Sangmuah.

Joe Robustelli
, a free-agent addition at receiver, remains on the one-game injured list. He was a non-participant in practice this week due to a hamstring injury.

The Edmonton Elks (2-0) will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-1) at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday, June 25 with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

I think our D has to key on Rankin, can't let him run wild...Won't be easy as we haven't look that good against the run and even worse if we let Fajardo play pitch and catch down the field....Our offence can get it done if we keep the Elks off the board....We shall see

2 weeks ago some guy named Rountree ran rampant on us. Now we face Rankin who, tbh, is the only thing on their depth chart that scares me (other than being dink-dunked across the field ala T-Hare by CoFaj).

There ought to have been significant and systematic changes to the D to ensure we can halt their conversion rate. You gotta think that was worked on over a bye week.

If the Hamilton game happens again with no effort shown to improve, pitchforks will come out. If the defense performs even reasonably well though we can chalk the other week up to a bad game and I can un-twist my knotted up knickers.

I want to see more out of Gatkouth this game.  Kongbo, who had 2 years of doing nothing of note, is starting to produce so far in 2026.  And Kongbo was a lower DP, right -- so Gatkouth should be far better.  He hasn't done anything yet.

Reese made a big play last game.  Fletcher didn't do much.  Didn't even notice Jenkins.  It can't just be all Willie & Ceresna.  If anything, Ceresna drawing a double team most snaps should allow the junior guys to get home.

Watch out for that patented Cody wheel out escape... plan for the wheel and tackle him where he's going to be, not where he is.  Blow him up!

I wish this game was away.  I noticed the D had real trouble getting things setup right with the big home crowd noise.  I think they may instantly be better if playing in a quiet environment.

Of course, they have to learn to function in our noise, but maybe one step at a time.  Maybe MOS needs to be piping in the crowd noise when the D is practicing...

First, the last home game was pretty quiet for our crowd because it was very clear they weren't going to get off then field anyway. And they didn't have trouble hearing one another, they had trouble reading out the assignment based on the routes they were seeing. It was a "who does what when" problem, not a "what are we doing" one.

Very different.

Had to look it up... Kongbo was 1RDP!  Wow, I had forgotten that.  '19 draft.  Because he fizzled out when here I'd call that a bit of a wasted pick.  Yikes.

He was really looking like that would be it for him in the CFL after a few years of producing nada.  If he's finally making hay, good for him.  Good timing.

Man, I really hope Gatkouth turns out better than Kongbo.  Something more like a Betts, please.

Maybe 2nd & 3rd Q.  But not to start the game, when we stopped them on their first drive, and were up most of the Q.  No excuse for low noise then.  And we got within 8 a couple of times late in the game, and the crowd got REALLY loud -- much louder than the rest of the night.  As I said in GDT, once the nambypamby fans left the real fans let 'er rip.  ;)

I don't know why all that pointing and shouting of "you go here", "you take that SB", would be any easier in the noise.  I think the noise did cause problems because a) you can see it on TV (or in stadium), and b) this is the first time many of those guys had to experience that.  Sure, Moxey had heard it before, but never had to operate in it.  And Williams is raw green.

Aside: I find it interesting the DL and LB/DB don't communicate AT ALL on these passing downs.  The LB/DBs do comm between each other like crazy.  But I would have thought front 4 would have to comms with other-8 to some degree?  Maybe it's all determined way in advance by the playcall.  Weird.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment at all.

He was a solid developmental piece who got to learn form the likes of Jefferson and Jeffcoat, helping the team win back-to-back championships. He also managed to get some looks from both the 49ers and then the Broncos during that time. He's since put up respectable numbers (https://www.cfl.ca/players/jonathan-kongbo/164863/) and is off to a good start this season with the Argos.

It's too bad the Bombers couldn't have found a way to retain him; he's a good NAT. I wouldn't be mad to have him on the D-line right now as a depth/rotational piece.

We need to see something from some of the newbies on the DL. At least some of the stops on Rankin have to be made by them. If he's getting past the LOS to the LB's or beyond, it will be a long game.

Coordinator send in the call. It's relayed. From there: defensive line doesn't need the whole coverage call. They need alignment and their own thing, gaps, stunts, pass-rush contain, etc. Linebackers usually set the front strength and identify the MLB on any given play, Younger changes it a bunch, and alerts for blitzes and who's in behind it.. The secondary (including the SAM in the CFL, usually) are constantly talking and there's a numbering off of receivers usually or some way of identifying them. Usually your safety helps the secondary a ton (where coaches say Kramdi is helpful) because they see the formations most clearly usually and can tell everyone where the help is or isn't based on the play call.

That's all relatively easy at the pro level.

The hard part is adjusting to motion and the exact formation in real time based on the play call. The whole unit needs to do that at once. It's basically 12 guys needing to all read the same way to information changing in front of them using the play call they're in as the operating system logic for that play. When you see guys yelling or directing, it's almost never that they don't know the context/play it's that they are clarifying or confused on what to do based on the look or what happened.

Correct Kongbo didn't fizzle out in Wpg. he left 2 separate times to pursue NFL offers, after the 2019 season and again after 2021. When he returned to the league in 2023 he signed with the Lions.

Nobody in Sask. complaining about Vaughters or Devin Adams performance, they seem to be getting it done with mostly a 4 man front.  So is it the personell or is it the scheme that's not functioning well in Wpg?

I predict that Fajardo is held to about 200 yards passing. Their run game held to about 100 yards combined.

Bombers win 27 - 14 today.

Oliveria rushes for 110 yards.

You heard it here 1st. :)

It's the scheme. We literally do not value sacks to the point of it being almost discouraged. Better to be in exactly the right spot so Younger can call some kind of wild, layered coverage in behind than getting up field and laying the hurt. We are a unit that doesn't attack by choice, not a unit that can't. It's exactly why they can tell you with a straight face that Thomas was exceptional last year and Willie J is a perfect fit for the defense. They are technically playing exactly how JY wants them to.

Quote from: Blue In BC on June 25, 2026, 04:31:27 PMI predict that Fajardo is held to about 200 yards passing. Their run game held to about 100 yards combined.

Bombers win 27 - 14 today.

Oliveria rushes for 110 yards.

You heard it here 1st. :)

I predict they get to our D, but we win, because our D sucks.

Rankin rushes for more than Brady, but we win a squeaker 36-33.  Sergio being the hero..again.

Our Defense may suck but our offense is better all around, so we should win this one, crowd noise with the assist.

I have a condo board meeting to attend to, who schedules these things? Bah. I'll be watching in the background.

Enjoy the game everyone! Go Blue!

Quote from: Sir Blue and Gold on June 25, 2026, 05:00:18 PMIt's the scheme.

For those that like JY, this is what you're signing up for.
The narrative that we don't value sacks or that they would be discouraged is as an absurd take as I have seen.  No defense ever would have that as a game plan, full stop.

We brought in Ceresna for this exact reason and paid a pretty penny.  We got home often game 1 (4 times).

Fact is that we attack at times, we blitz when appropriate.

Another opinion that is lacking factual backing imo.

Respectfully, this is one of those times where you just don't know what you don't know and you're not aware that don't know it. I'm talking about the defensive line play, roles and responsibilities. Not pressure from elsewhere. It's in the context of Vaughters but not only that.

Your reply is a wee bit of a tounge twister there.  I know what I know lol.

We will go after Cody today, that bugger will twist and shout his way to freedom at times.  Rankin will make things very difficult for our DL and LBs.

Likely get a sack or two.  I would focus on run D and giving Cody as complex looks as possible to limit the short and mid routes.  Not to worried about the deep ball today.

I said it's almost discouraged, but sacks are de-prioritized to pretty significantly. JY values controlled, gap responsible defensive line play and asks a ton more than what would be typical in run defense across all downs and situations. That really is how it is. You can choose to believe if the sun comes up in the morning or not. Have someone else explain it if you like.

We have dead last in sacks each year under Jordan Younger. So you can admit it's not something he prioritizes or you have to admit that we are very bad at it.

Since the focus has been on the defense and I'll be watching them closely tonight, very little talk on the offense.

Would love to see sustained drives and really spreading the ball around. It's been fun this year to watch Zach seem a little more like his 2023ish self, running around and making plays and mostly smart decisions. I hope that continues.

O'Shea made some comments about playing young in the last games. Inexperience for some players showed. Over enthusiasm left gaps in discipline.

The newbies have had time to better understand it's a team game and adjust to their responsibilities at the pro level.

We should see a much better outing from them tonight. A win is a bonus but we have to play smarter.

We've been bad at getting sacks since Jackson Jeffcoat retired. He's gone, and Willie is getting tired.

I watched the last game first half, kept track... the bombers didn't go with three d lineman once.

They blitzed seven times with time left in the second quarter.

These current players are not good at getting pressure.

Elks 1st 2 drives were for 100+ yards. I don't know we can take credit for them being stopped on the 1 yard line. Receiver bobbled the ball early.

Bombers, lose Neufeld as a late scratch? Now we don't have a back up OL

1. 4 fumbles
2. missed fg
3. Wilson nicked maybe concussion protocol and could be back?
4. Smith and Ayers seeing the field often. Ayers makes a big play on Rankin.
5. Daniels catching passes but lost an important fumble.
6. Jenkins, Fletcher, Reese and Ceresna have been invisible.

I've noticed a few DL like Jenkins taking an inside / shortest route to Rankin leaving the flat open for a big Rankin run. Same play Williams seemed to be doing the same thing.

Ok. I can't tell who Smith is replacing when he's on. Just a guess but Ayers probably replaces a DE when he's in?

Two weeks off and relatively healthy but when have we seen the Bombers fumble 4 times before half time?

Oliveria's fumble cost us 3 points against but also lost opportunity to score on offence.

It's possible this game is over at half time.  Hamilton must be licking their chops. Yikes.

National offensive lineman Pat Neufeld has been moved to the reserve list  (NFR – Personal Matter)
National offensive lineman Tui Eli will now start at centre
American offensive lineman Tyler Elsbury will now start at right guard

Rankins averaging over 9 yards a carry.  The only way that's considered good defense is if you're JY's mom.

Yards don't count on the score board. If the offence had held onto the ball and Sergio makes his usual kicks, this is a very different game. Defence has kept us in the game by forcing a turn over and holding them to 3 on the fumble return.

That's hardly the point and you should know it. TOP and field position are all part of the game.  IIRC the Elks scored a FG on their 2nd possession. It was the fumble return that ended up with a turnover on downs.

If I got that backwards, I stand corrected but I think that was what happened. In any case you can't let a team drive 100+ yards twice to start the game. Noting I said drive not a 2 play deal but 10 play type situation.

That was the ugliest game we've seen from the Bombers in some time.

Aside from the bad play, several things come to mind:

1. We don't have a DI on offence when we have an injury to a receiver.
2. Ditto if we lose an import DB even though we have to DI's on defence and in theory Vaval. I don't want him to need to play DB.
3. Castillo had his worst game but the loss can be blamed on many players. I lost count 6 or 7 fumbles with about 5 lost?
4. We continue to have soft coverage. 2 and 15? No problem for our opponents. Need to throw out to the flat? No problem.
5. Our DL had a combined 5 DT's. That's not good.

The irony is that the offence moved the ball but kept shooting themselves in the foot: Collaros, Demski, Oliveria and Daniels all fumbled.

I was semi right that Fajardo didn't have a great passing game, only 267 yards. we held Rankin to just over 100 yards. The problem is that all happened in the 1st half. 200 yards of it in their 1st 2 series.

When it really counted the defense let us down again.  Edmonton marched down the field with ease...over 60 yards taking off 2.5 minutes of the clock for the TD.

lol at Collaros' response on the final drive.  Guy has 50 seconds left near centrefield - enough time for some intermediate passes to get us within reasonable range of a TD attempt.  Instead all we get are some piddly little passes for a handful of yards before he throws he throws a final pass that is nowhere near the endzone as time expires.  He sure is a good QB isn't he.

Only having 1 import receiver left and using 4 Canadians and you want to put that on Collaros. Add to that the OL couldn't stop the rush because we had 4 Canadian receivers and the Elks knew that was easier coverage.

It was the perfect storm of this year's JY defense, last year's propensity to turn over the ball in the red zone on O, and whenever the last time Serg decided to have a terrible game, all in one.

Look at their D line getting  pressure seemingly every snap and our D line not. How many sacks did we give up?. And how many did we get?? It starts right there. And don't give me the line we had 2 changes to our O line just before game time bunk—-we knew they were going to be weak and yet we called for Collaros to stand in their and get sacked. Why didn't we employ the Trevor Harris dump the ball off-so we don't lose 15 yards on a first down sack strategy?? We are just so stupid

I'm not convinced a 3 import OL is an improvement at the cost of another receiver. Elks had 3 sacks and a lot of pressure on both the run and pass game. That got worse when Wilson was injured. He's our deepest threat.

I didn't pickup on that but if true maybe its time to move on, I have liked Wilson in the past but I don't notice him much. Many issues with the Bombers too many areas to fix at this point for me seems like we will be lucky to be .500 at this point.

We won't win many games if our defense let's teams drive 90 yards for scores every game. Our offense struggled but at least they have the right concepts. Younger needs to be fired. He is terrible. The whole system makes no sense.

We are going to have a tough year until they figure out how to attack, get the DBs in position to contest balls and play real, professional defense. So many plays are made in front of our secondary. The last drive was gift wrapped. Just like the one in Calgary we got away with and just like the game going into the bye.

We have a front four who was given the green light to attack for about one quarter.

Was it my imagination or did the dline  play better without Ceresna?  Once again this game to me showed the flaws in going so heavily with vets (read that as old) Is it a surprise that Ceresna is hurt again?
One thing this game showed is our severe lack of depth on the oline, Eli isnt good enough, and Elsbury isnt a guard, the Elks are much quicker on the dline and it showed. This wasn't on Zac, it looked a lot like ly when he was getting rushed on nearly every play. How many  years in a row have we not drafted an offensive lineman with our first pick and its showing.
I thought Condell's whole emphasis was going to be on protection, its why we went to 3 cdn receivers. We didn't deserve to win this game, and whats disturbing is the same flaws keep showing up

The defense gave up TWO more 100+ yard drives for scores. They're on some kind of record pace. It's a disaster. What you're watching is terrible defense. The cushions are massive. The system doesn't generate pressure and we played the whole first half doing JYs stupid contain collapse concept on the defensive line making Cody look like Anthony Calvillo. His system is terrible. He's a terrible play caller. It is still not working.

Funny enough it looked better in the third quarter when we actually let Willie pass rush and then when we got up and we needed a stop Younger went back to his hilariously bad deep zone concept and our secondary watched play after play get completed in front of them until they blew the lead again. The defense has collapsed down the stretch three times in three games. We will never win anything of note with this approach. Ever. It's a fundamentally bad system and someone needs to make him change or take the headset away.

The D collapsing at the end is par for this year.  But it's also exactly how we lost the '22 and '23 GC's.  Oh look, and one of those was to perennial-mediocre Cody.  Point being: this has been an issue for many years.

The worst was losing the game on 2nd & medium to an everyone-runs-to-sticks-and-curls scheme.  Since we play way off they just ate that up.  Wasn't even a challenge.  Which I find hilarious as over the last 4 seasons we've run that exact same scheme ourselves on O at critical points and failed every single time.  The normal team DBs play closer and hit you when you're trying to catch.  THAT's what we should have been doing.

I don't think Cody threw to the mid/back of the EZ even once.  He didn't have to.  Everything he wanted was in front.  So stupid.  Younger is like a roulette player who just keeps betting red even though it's been black 20 times in a row.  He just keeps betting on red and it comes up black another 20 times.  At least with roulette it'll eventually round out and catch up -- but in Younger's case the opponent just ensures it stays black.  He can't mix it up to catch them by surprise EVEN ONCE?

Well, normally Younger guesses right 0 or 1 time a game (out of ~35 D snaps?).  Tonight he guessed right maybe 4 or 5 times -- improvement.  We did catch Cody flat-footed at times.  We did catch Rankin for a loss at times, and limited his explosions -- and it would have been one more but tackling let us down again.

There was one run blitz time I really got a kick out of, just as I was screaming RUN BLITZ.

But 5 out of 35 guesses right, while better than normal, wasn't even half as good as EDM's DC was doing.  All the other teams make it look so easy.  Us... struggle for every inch, in every aspect.

Someone in-game said it feels like Burke era.  It's not THAT bad yet (because we actually have real QBs), but it sure is starting to smell like it.  Everything a struggle while opponents do whatever they want effortlessly.  It's depressing.

In the stands I didn't know Ceresna was out.  Not sure anyone around me did either, they usually chirp about things like that.  Too busy trying to be loud.

But you're right, if Ceresna left sometime in the 3rd, our DL was doing better without him.

I was going to say in-game that Ceresna was totally useless.  Same as last week.  Only in game 1 did he have (great) success.  I think teams got the film and just double-team him every play (HAM did), and yet the other DL can't capitalize.  Maybe he was dinged up already in the HAM game and can't play 100%.

Is Younger spending 99.9% of his time working on his coverage scheme and no one is working on DL?  Where's the stunts?  Where's the creativity?  Where's making use of the single-team everyone not named Ceresna is guaranteed to get?  Is Fatboi doing nothing except making everyone "gap sound"?

Wrong day to pick to try to sell $244 Ceresna signed jerseys.  I went to the store after and they had a dedicated rack completely full.  So if you still wanted one and weren't at the game, I'm sure they'll be there on Friday & weekend.

Quote from: Blue In BC on June 26, 2026, 03:45:01 AMThe irony is that the offence moved the ball but kept shooting themselves in the foot: Collaros, Demski, Oliveria and Daniels all fumbled.

I was semi right that Fajardo didn't have a great passing game, only 267 yards. we held Rankin to just over 100 yards. The problem is that all happened in the 1st half. 200 yards of it in their 1st 2 series.

Once upon a time the Bombers effectively ran a highly successful hurry up offence, the last time they used it may have been under LaPo. That is the go to plan when you have to sustain a drive with limited time remaining on the clock.  Fajardo has been orchestrating those last minute drives effectively since the time he was a bridesmaid in Sask.

At one time Zach had the ability to move the ball safely and efficiently down the field on a last minute game winning drive, he did this countless times in the good years prior to 2024.  His last minute drives now look haphazard and disorganized, instead of hitting receivers in predefined routes quickly like the majority  of CFL QB's are able to do in this situation, he's winging it, looking for the receiver beating his man 40 yds. down field with the result that he often gets sacked or ends up dumping the ball off to Brady in the flats more often than not.

I think MOS needs to get them both in a room and tell Younger that he's the ops guy and all scheme is now Hall's.  Hall had his moments in the past, but he'd never let you keep creeping to the EZ without stiffening up.  The idea is start soft and go for INTs/mistakes, then stiffen up to stop them from just diming you into the EZ.  No idea what Younger is trying to do by staying soft the entire time.

I think he's very accurate on the deep pass.  That's not the problem.  The problem is he's truncated at 50Y.  All teams know that.  So if it goes longer than 50Y they just hold up, let the REC overrun them, and snag the INT.

He does seem to have severe problems now hitting RECs in stride, whether crossing or go.  I consider this separate from the deep shot limit.  I've noticed either Zach isn't choosing to try them, or Condell isn't drawing them up.  That means teams that figure this out can ignore any routes that require catching in motion -- concentrate on the sitdowns and you can slaughter us.

Ya, our 2 min drill used to be league-best for many years.  Oh look, mostly our GC win years.  It existed but started petering out under Buck.  It was horrible for Buck's last season here.  It must have all just been remnants from Lapo like you said.

So it was a miracle we were able to get a big chunk in very limited time to win vs CGY.  Normally when we get the ball with 1:30 left I have zero confidence we'll get anything done.

Part of the problem is we ignore the outs.  Most teams (see MTL/SSK) switch to an out-mostly scheme so the clock stops every time.  And for the love of all holy why did we start the final drive with a run??  What a waste of time.

Quote from: Throw Long Bannatyne on June 26, 2026, 06:28:45 AMlooking for the receiver beating his man 40 yds. down field with the result that he often gets sacked or ends up dumping the ball off to Brady in the flats more often than not.

At the bare minimum every pass should be 10-15Y.  There is no reason to have anyone running a 4Y route at that point.  If you can't find anything then Zach can scramble for 10.  But it all has to be QUICK.  Boom boom decide if it's there then abandon and throw it away or scramble straight ahead or throw ONLY to an out who's already at the rail to stop the clock.  They'll give you that 3Y rail every time, and if everyone is 20-40Y downfield the flat will be empty.

I said in the other thread that no one is spending the time required thinking about this, nor practicing, nor teaching.  Sure, we're spending the required time (which per CFLPA rules is less than 1 or 2 shifts at McD's each week), but no one is putting the time in that's required to turn this around.  And it won't magically turn around itself!

Wasn't it EDM taking the clock from about 5:00 to 0:50?  It was worse than them wasting 2.5 mins.

It's times like those, where I think we all knew EDM was going to score, where maybe you let them complete the 10Y pass and all D just sits down to give them the TD and we have 2.5 mins left on the clock so WE get the benefit of a 3-down drive.  I'm dead serious that this should be a strategic option for us when the D lets everyone drive for 100Y every time the opponent has the gas on.

Quote from: blueandgoldguy on June 26, 2026, 03:45:39 AMlol at Collaros' response on the final drive.

100%.  Sickening.  Look at what Alexander does in that situation.  Holy smokes.  And no, this isn't all on Zach, it's just as much Condell and MOS's fault.  And the RECs too.  Never open, crap routes.  Heck, they didn't even give him that juicy 15Y zone sit that's worked so well for us.  And the makeshift garbage OL.

Remember the MTL Miracle game in '17 or '18?  I think the final TD drive started around the 50 (after OSK) and had about 44s left.  And that was with "lowly" Matt Nichols!

You can't argue the 3 import OL is better when our OL has been manhandled in each game, especially the last 2 against better teams.

Maybe Elsbury improves but the ratio change has not been a success yet.

There is a trade off long discussed that there is a trade off at receiver in order to have a 3 import OL. That became even more apparent when injury forced us into a 4 Canadian receiver group and no DI to replace Wilson.

That concept is like walking on the edge of a cliff in the fog.

We can say what-ifs and could-haves all day long but the reality is last season we lost our last game to Mtrl. We won our first game against Calgary, then get molly whopped by Hammy, then lost to Edm. both at home......

At the end of the day we can say it's a, b or c but reality is we are not good enough, it's not one scheme or player or issue. Unless multiple things improve we are not a good team. The stats say so, the record says so, and the eye test says so.

I don't see us beating Hammy in Hammy as long as Bo is healthy, so we are staring down a realistic 1-3 record....then what.....

Looking over the stats, realistically the D played well enough to win the game, they only gave up 23 pts. and they stopped the Elks in the Redzone from scoring TD's 3 out of 6 times, plus they caused 2 turnovers.

On the other hand the offence fumbled the ball 6 times and lost 3, luckily they didn't include Cobb's drop or it would have been 7/4.  IMO the nail in the coffin was when they received the ball with 5:10 left and promptly went 2 and out, leaving Fajardo with 3:51 to score the game winning TD, which he easily did.

In days of lore they would have played Brady ball and marched the field while methodically consuming the last remaining minutes of the game. Such a result would have sparked wild enthusiasm for the coming season on such a glorious night, instead a black cloud of doubt has slipped over POS and the team's prospects for this season. They absolutely must find a way to beat Hamilton next Sunday.

How we got to halftime down only 11, I'll never know.

You can't cough up the ball in your own red zone.  Daniels just got a huge slice of humble pie, that was a dumb rookie mistake.  Take the yards.

Yes, Oline was not great.  Zach running like a maniac in the backfield down not allow him to set up for the good deep throw.  Neuf out, Elsbury playing a position he hadn't played before coming off his own wedding, not sure that's optimal.

Castillo missing 2?  That's the game if he hits.

I was playing poker, and watched it between hands, and when big plays happened.  Not sure if the game I saw was different than the game would be watching it from KO to final whistle.  I have it PVR'd, but not sure I want to watch it.  At all.

Did see the Perkins SY for a big gain.  So much for Taylor taking that job.

Younger's D shut the Elks down in the 2nd half.  He is making half time adjustments well, zero 3rd quarter scores this year.  I guess its just actual game planning that is the issue.

MCI25 on the final kickoff looked pretty sharp, straight up field with determination.  Yes, we want shifty Vaval there, but they astutely kicked to MCI25, and I think he did good to make that return.

What was Wallace thinking rumbling with the fumble.  Those wonderful hoggies loose theer minds when they get the ball.  He wasted a good 5 seconds there.  Fall on it and secure it. Running with it wastes time, and risks fumbling.

Far too soon to write off the year, but man...

At all.

At least we're using Daniels so he'll improve and force defences to not just ignore him.

Perkins looked good on his long run but I perceive that Elgersma is moved to RR in any case once Brown has a practice or 2. That might be as early as the next game since he's familiar with Condell.

MCI plays on return and cover teams, so he's a valuable player on the AR. I would like to see him get an offensive rep as well.

Taylor can still take his job as a short yardage QB.  You want you third string QB to also throw the ball if needed.

Hearing that JC94 clasped on the sideline?? Didn't see this? Did JC94 just over heat.

However, that gave Fletcher more snaps and he showed the quickness he displays in practice. 271 lbs. DL running down Leake.

Daniels will learn to run over DBs, not try to jump over them.

Yah saw that, Fletcher has some wheels for a big man. So far these young bucks on the D-line haven't made a dent, I think they must be struggling with the amount of holding the O-line is allowed.  Even saw Stan attempting to integrate it into his game a bit more, at times he's holding on for dear life. Fair to say this will probably be his final season.

Can't recall if you're one who goes to games or not, so I'll just throw in here that the temp was perfect -- just above light sweater threshold by 0:00.  It's not like it was 30 and muggy.  That said, ya those guys working hard certainly can still get hot and overheat if they aren't taking care of themselves.

Too bad my seat makes seeing our bench impossible -- best I can do is see the guys standing close to the sideline, even if I stand up.  So binocs scouting for dirt like this only works on the enemy bench and WPG goings-on are mostly a mystery to me.

Perkins looked ok in PS.  Elgersma maybe showed a bit better, but it wasn't a country mile.

MOS hasn't gambled passing with the SY unit since Prukop botched one 2-3 seasons back.  (Maybe there was 1 Strev try in his starts last season on 2nd?)  I think we need to do more SY passing, at least one a year, to force D's to honor the coverage.  I don't care if it fails that one time.

I'm gonna need Junkie or someone to give us the stats on that.  My distinct impression game 1 & 2 is pass pro was superb.  I guess the quick easy stat is how many sacks did Zach take in each game.  Pressure stat would be better.

In any event, I guarantee you that even if the OL was a bit stinky in pass pro in game 1 & 2, they were infinitely worse in game 3.  Zach had almost no time on a great many passing downs.

I do rewatches focusing on the lines and clearly our memories are differing here.  Not sure I can handle yet another rewatch of game 2...

Quote from: Blue In BC on June 26, 2026, 01:07:38 PMThere is a trade off long discussed that there is a trade off at receiver in order to have a 3 import OL. That became even more apparent when injury forced us into a 4 Canadian receiver group and no DI to replace Wilson.

Ya, but how often do we get an IMP WR injured mid-game?  Like uber rarely.  Is it worth a DI just for that?  Or should we have guys better than Cobb...  In past years it was solved by having our returner also be O-capable (Grant, Lucky).  Just bad luck our returner is on D now.

Add in the fact that Pokey got creamed tackling someone... that's not business as usual.  It's a freak accident.  Do you strike a valuable D DI in order to cover that miniscule risk?  Especially since we're always clamoring for more DI on DL!!

Maybe the problem is Cobb/Corcoran are both waterbugs -- and one waterbug is always fine, but 2 are not optimal.  We need one to be a big body for different looks (even when there are no injuries).  Someone like... Mital or KSB...

Yes and no. Our extra DI's after Castillo and Vaval are used on defence. At the moment the extra ones would be Reese, Ayers or Fletcher.

Remove one or the other and we could add Singer or Fredickson as a 3rd import receiver.  It's about roster choices over the whole.

Is the trade off from defence to offence a better choice? The coaches don't seem to agree. If Vaval was more of an offensive player like Grant, then we'd have an offensive type option but we don't don't. He's a defensive emergency option.

Any injury to a receiver and we're a little thin for options.

And yes, it's not uncommon to lose one or more receivers during a game.

1Q9:10 I think there's an illegal participation -- uncalled -- that would have helped us.  On Vaval's kick-off return EDM #49 is lightly pushed OOB.  He runs down the sideline chasing Vaval, taking many steps on the line.  When Vaval starts to get tripped up by another guy, #49 takes half a step inbounds and instantly has his hands on Vaval to make the final wrap-up.  The foot touching down inbounds and his hand going on Vaval are nearly simultaneous.

He is allowed to keep playing if he "first re-establishes himself in bounds", without any foul.  But I'm not sure one foot down and hands on the guy right away counts as "re-establishment".

@Stats Junkie thoughts?

I think it should have been 10 more yards tacked on.  I won't comment on what ref was trailing #49 the whole way.  That said, it appears the league may have told the refs at some point to be lax on the IP, as there's been so many missed in PS and first few weeks.

He still has to make an effort to return to the field of play as quickly as possible. I don't know if that was the case, but that's the criteria.

the rule states that he has to re-establish himself before making a play, it doesn't say as quickly as possible, it s a loop hole that needs to be closed, and re-establish is defined as 1 foot in bounds and no contact with out of bounds area

dd is right.  You have to "re-establish" yourself in the field of play before having anything to do with the play.  That's literally in the rule.  That's the whole point of my post.

BinBC: There's no text saying you have to get back in as fast as possible.  There should be!  But there's not.  So the dude running 30Y down on the rail completely OOB, while looking bad (and seeming unfair), doesn't matter here.

In the same motion his first foot touches inbounds, his hand is onto the carrier.  To me that's not "re-establishing yourself".  That is lunging from OOB straight onto the carrier.

The funny thing is, I don't think the refs pondered this and considered him "re-established", I think the refs were completely oblivious to the fact someone was OOB!  I think it's the same problem as the PS.  They simply are clueless about it because they have 100% focus on the ball.  I think the league needs to remind them they need to keep track of OOB players.

Finished the rewatch.  What a disgusting pile of poop.  Maybe even worse than when I saw it in person.

Completely outplayed, out-planned, out-executed, out-brained, out-practiced, out-physicaled, out-coached, out-everything.

The thing that stands out most is every EDM unit outplayed both our same unit and the unit they line up against.  Their DL was better than our OL and our DL, etc.  We didn't win a single match-up.

We made their rookies and retreads look like all-stars!  I'm not even joking.  Cephus & Luther outclassing Demski, Nield, Pokey, everyone.  Rankin showing Brady what a real RB can do.  Shamefully, lowly low-wattage-bulb Cody miles better than Zach.  Their not-so-hot OL stopping nearly everything we tried.  Ceresna did absolutely nothing, might as well started Fatboi.  Broxton did absolutely nothing -- worse, he was a detriment.  Rand was better.  Eli/Elsbury blowing it every other snap.

Their OL, impenetrable.  Their DL, unstoppable.  Their RECs catching nearly every heater, even when off-target.  Their DBs in every hip pocket in man, and tight in zone to punish every catch or knock it out.  YAC was unheared of.  Rankin was held to the lowest this season, but still got way over 100.

And our D scheme.  So awful I can't even take it anymore.  Critical drives and downs and every deep DB was 10Y off the REC!  95% of the time they couldn't even make it to the underneath throw in time to have a hope of disrupting the catch.  That's not our DBs, that's scheme.  It's pathetic.  With no one anywhere close in front, what is the point of this?  You're not getting an INT.  What are we doing?

The O had many chances to win it but couldn't duplicate what EDM was doing.  We made EDM (EDM!!) look like GC champs.  They implemented the all-dink&dunk against us, that every good team has been using vs us for 2.5 years now.  I think Cody threw one deep pass all night, and it failed.  But everything underneath except maybe a Mack drop was complete, except for the handful of miracles when our DL actually got pressure and Cody threw early -- then he was less than 50%.  Hmm, almost like there's something to that...

Our O scheme was equally awful.  Just playing normal Bomber ball like it's 2021 and we have AH and Lawler and Yoshi.  Don't you guys get it?  Those guys are gone.  Nield and Cobb are not going to do anything spectacular!  No one is going to get open in man!  No one is coming down with a 50/50.

Where. Was. The. Hot. Route.  All night long the blitz would come and all 5 RECs would be oblivious.  Zach had zero options other than ending up on his butt.  It's truly disgraceful.  You call this a prepared team?  It's a joke.

And our final drive.  You have a certain amount of time.  You have a certain distance to cover.  Run the math!  50s and about 60Y and after 3 plays you've gotten 15 or so?  Math!!  It doesn't matter if guys are double covered, you need to move the ball in chunks.  20Y minimum target every pass.  Or. You'll. Lose.  Math.  You want to lose with a shot at winning, or just lose in boring hopeless fashion?

The only thing I can think of is Zach is worried about his INT stats.  That's it.  Gun-shy because he knows we'll lose but wants to preserve his stats.  Maybe he chose himself in fantasy and didn't want the -2!  Surely it can't be coaches thinking points, because those don't matter for the season series -- as we face EDM 3 times!

Ironically, our O was probably good enough to beat 2025 EDM.  The problem is they've improved a bit.  And we've moved backwards.  Especially our D.  "Mark Killam is a bad HC and won't win" some say.  Ya, well Killam spent all off-season with his coords planning out how to beat everyone, and so far they're executing it perfectly.  And I bet his players put in extra time; because they want to WIN and they know it won't just be handed to them.

Until we revamp quite a few things, I now don't see any chance of us beating anyone except OTT (if we're lucky!) and BC.  Even if our O scores on more drives, our D will give up points on nearly every drive against.  And it's not even that I think our players are garbage -- they aren't -- it's that there is no coaching going on, no leadership, no time put in to plan, no ideas to improve.  Worst of all, I think the team has lost faith.  It will take weeks, or the whole season, before we have any hope of getting that back.  And this is the optimistic take...

My breakdown:

IMPACTFUL BAD PLAYS:
broxton 3
wallace 2
elsbury 2   * wrong spot, he gets a pass
eli 2
brady 1
jenkins 1
lawson 1
ceresna 1
vibert 1
willie 1
stan 1

Wallace still can't hold a candle to our past LGs that have gone on to greener pastures.  Sad.  Broxton looks horrible.  What a waste.  Does he suck?  Or is it that a RT can't learn LT?  So lost and useless out there.

IMPACTFUL GOOD PLAYS:
willie 4
fletcher 3
williams 3
jenkins 2
griffin 2
kramdi 2
lawson 1
kyrie 1
holm 1
jones 1
ayers 1
elsbury 1
eli 1

Don't you talk smack about Willie.  If you pay attention he's still our best weapon.  Fletcher is making an immediate impact.  Leave him on the AR!  Except game 1, he's been doing more than Ceresna.  He has hustle, and outstanding speed!  Williams is an amazing find.  Rookie year, couple of games in, and he's already better than Bond was.  Another keeper, and rising star.  Younger guys Jenkins, Griffin making an impact.

Zach was throwing great deep shots -- just mostly not connecting.  But look at the perfect spiral and arc and enough strength he was doing 50Y quite a few times.  And eminently catchable.  Well, if we had top quality RECs.  Zach's mid/deep ball is better than anyone's except BLM, IMHO.  But his short game -- soooo slow, no zip; no chance at all for RECs!  Compare to the heat Cody put on the short pass.  Ouch.

Ceresna wasn't just out for the 4th, he was out for the 2nd half of Q1.  Many drives he was absent all game.  It's kind of hard to differentiate him with Lawson though -- almost the exact same body type and 94 blends into 99.  Fletcher too!  Makes it really hard to tell who is who on the ubiquitous side-shots.

I saw at 2Q2:31 Ceresna got his ankle rolled on (friendly fire?).  He was in after that, but maybe it started being less.  If there's anything wrong with him, probably ankle.  No idea why the rumor is he was passing out, though no law says he can't have 2 issues.

Lots of Ayers in the early game.  At one point he tracked & sealed Rankin in a way that seemed impossible.  Wow!  Less of an impact later on, but didn't see him much.  Maybe he knows he's the bubble DI and is trying to stay on the team?

No D honors the outside on Brady runs.  It's usually wide open.  Why we never have him kick out just once in a blue moon to keep D's honest is beyond me.  See: Rankin.

1Q9:37 Ceresa gets absolutely owned being tossed down like garbage by OL and leaves the Rankin TD gap wide open.  Our OL got tossed down a lot too.  How can both our lines get so dominated by this mediocre team?

1Q8:53 Wallace has a hard time with a smaller DT, and drops him too early and tries to get on a LB, but that DT just waits him out and goes in behind Wallace to stop Brady for a tiny gain.  Timing is all off.  Zach/Brady are taking way too long to decide things and do the hand off, and the 1st level blocks are shed before he even reaches the line and the DL makes an easy tackle as Brady is surrounded.  And he always refuses to bounce it outside even though it probably would work!  This is so common for us.

1Q5:37 Again worrying about 2nd level before the DL is fully taken care of = blowup Brady & fumble return for 95Y.

1Q0:14 KJG clutch catch when EDM backed up to their 2, is the exact same catch as Bailey did in the '19 GC: one hand has it normally the other has it with the back of the hand.  Since his body rolls on top of it and the ball touches the ground extensively, I guarantee the ball moved relative to that back-of-hand.  Command stole that catch from Bailey in the GC.  This shouldn't be a completion either.  Since he was falling down to catch it, he has to survive contact, and have full control before his body rolls onto the rail.  He does a great job selling it confidently before he even got up, which I think influenced the refs.  Every ref not named Major was atrocious.

2Q10:54 Bad spot, gave Cody the 2 when his knee was down when the ball was at the 3.

3Q7:02 Late hit on Collaros was exactly the same timing as the RTP Cody got a few series earlier, but no flag for Zach.

4Q8:52 why is the EDM DB beating up on Perkins after his big run?  Well after the whistle, 100% should be OC or UR.  I hope he gets at least a fine, not like that helps us now, though.

4Q3:27 Completely erroneous spot on the EDM final TD drive; ball never reaches the 49, not on 1st effort, not on 2nd.  Yet after the 3min warning break the ball is at the 47.5 and 6" from the 1st down.  What on earth is going on here?  It's not even an obscured or tricky spot.  It's clearly obvious to everyone.

It's down to what "re-establish" means. Is it one foot in the field of play? Is it both feet? Without a definition in the rule book, it could mean either to neither.

We've seen penalties for players running down the sidelines out of bounds and then coming back in resulting in a penalty. Where they draw the line as to how long or how far a player can do that is less clear. However it is a fact.

True, but were they pushed out first?

Either way, they can't run 15 yards downfield out of bounds and then come back into the field of play. That has actually happened and a penalty called. I deleted the PVR for this game so can't remember the exact situation.

It might make it more egregious or obvious (thus easier to call), but TB is right: the rule book doesn't care/mention about how long you're OOB.  And it does clearly mention the "re-establish" part and the "out because of contact with another player" part.

If you ever remember what game it is, and it's a WPG game, I can track it down to check it out.  I don't recall that particular tidbit... though I do recall a handful of IP calls in the last decade.  Maybe this is something the good refs notice more and the noobs & incompetents don't.

To me it almost means come back in, stop, then continue play.  To me it certainly does not mean "lunge from the sideline and the same motion has you tackling the carrier".

To me it seems like the refs (won't mention which favorite one was there at the time!) are completely oblivious to the fact someone is on the rail.  It's not that they're debating in their heads at the time "is he re-established enough?", it's that they don't even know he's out!

Re-establish is a grey area which makes it less clear.

It was never meant to mean stop then continue play. Going out of bounds means any part of the body is out of bounds. "Back in bounds" could mean that in the reverse.

But wouldn't you agree you can't lunge from OOB and tackle a guy running down the rail??

Yes, the CFL should clarify this, and do a better job making the rules less ambiguous.  I'm curious what the guys here who have previous ref experience, or know refs and can ask, would say about this.

I'd absolutely agree that you can't push off from OOB, but 1 foot in is fine.
