Title: Gas $1.64
Post by: Pigskin on March 17, 2026, 07:38:07 PM
Driving down Portage Ave this morning I noticed gas at $1.64, last night it was at $1.55 at the same gas station. Where will the prices end up.

Apparently it was $1.45 at 204 Fuel on Sargent yesterday. I picked up 100 gallons of gas about 6 weeks ago for my boat at $1.19. Just glad right now I have an EV.

The nice thing about the high price is it kills demand.  Which increases supply.  Which drives the price down.

We shouldn't be seeing such a huge increase here, as we are oil self sufficient, net exporters with near unlimited supply.

We do need more pipelines, train tank cars, and refineries.  We should start moving far more oil by train to the east coast, you can put 75000 barrels on a train, about the same as a small tanker.  We have a good rail network, just need the cars to make it work.  And they are a lot cheaper than pipelines and ocean tankers.

Algoma is a world class pipe mill.  Carney should place a standing order for pipeline grade/size pipe for them to produce whenever they have capacity.  Keep everyone employed and start building a stockpile for when pipelines get approved.

Maybe even steel for rail cars and rail road rails as well.  We have steel production capacity, use it to its max.

Build better, build Canadian.

That's an overly simplistic take.

Canada's economic machine runs predominantly on fossil fuels. Canadians by and large rely heavily on fossil fuels when it comes to food, energy, and transportation.

Demand of what is an essential commodity doesn't just decrease because the price of said commodity has increased substantially. We're already dealing with affordability crisis in this country; this spike in oil prices has only exacerbated that crisis.

But that's the point.

Prices put a damper on spending.  People think twice about trips they take, about the groceries they buy, any controllable expenses, like dining out or Skip.

COVID was a different reduction of demand because no one went out or travelled at all.  Oil dropped to a negative value.  I'm not saying that will happen, but we will see a dampening of demand, and that will allow us to export more, as that part of the demand will not shrink.

But we need to start building refineries ASAP and pipelines for that refined product.  Carney needs to get us to 100% self sufficiency on refined goods, nationwide.  Either tanker, rail or pipeline, we need to incentivize the east coast to get on board.  They have lots of oil out there, they just need to drill, baby, drill.

What point? You seemed to look at a complex issue and trivialize it, while making a suggestion that doesn't consider the myriad impacts in either the short- or long-term.

Increasing our reliance on a volatile commodity isn't practical if we want to become more self-sufficient as a country. Overdependence on fossil fuels has already negatively impacted (https://www.iisd.org/articles/deep-dive/fossil-fuels-drive-inflation-canada) affordability for consumers.

Canada has taken the high road on carbon and fossil fuels to the detriment of Canadians.

We can product the lowest carbon petrochemicals in the world, and we can provide a lower cost alternative to the Mid East, which it looks like will be an issue going forward.  For all we know, tomorrow, 20% of the entire supply of oil could disappear.  And much as we'd all like oil use to drop to zero, its not going to happen.

So, as a country, we need to take advantage of this resource while we can.  And we can build the best refineries to do it the best way, we have the technology, the resources and the manpower.

Oil is going to be sold, no matter what we do in protest.  Not being one of the ones selling it doesn't mean less will be sold, only that we won't have the resources to make if less impactful, and to have the money to help the world wean off it.

Is there a 50 year window of opportunity at present levels to recoup investment on oil?  Nope.  But there is at least 25 years.  Instead of leaving 200 years worth in the ground, and shipping what we do remove in its raw form for others to profit from, we need to do it all here.  And there's no reason we can't get to it quickly.

I am all for responsible planet stewardship, and it is a noble effort to try and do it all by ourselves, but without more international buy in, we're bailing the ocean with a teaspoon.

And we can increase our oil output and revenue in a responsible way.  As Carney continues to say on his trade missions, we have the lowest carbon oil on the planet.  So, increasing our global share of the oil industry by displacing dirty oil is making a carbon difference.

You've made numerous claims in this thread but have yet to substantiate them with evidence of any kind. This most recent post above is no exception.
