TSN still does an hour+ long show for every draft.  It's similar to this, but less hype and basically nothing "live"/in-person.

I like the idea of having the top X prospects in the room, that's cool.  Also having all the GMs in the room.

They also seem to make the picks faster.  I wonder if they had a shorter time limit than they give now.  I always thought they give teams way too long.  They have their lists all worked out ahead of time, and react/update as other teams are doing their thing.  They could shorten the clock to 1 to 2 mins no problem and speed things up.

I also prefer the media doing the announcements in this 1987 draft.  I always find it lame having the commish stand up there and announce everything, especially Johnston who is as inspiring as sandy loam.

Does anyone remember the dudes drafted top 3 in this show?  Did they pan out or bust?  The names didn't mean anything to me.

The top 2 were allstars for a lot of years. Leo Groenewegen and Blake Marshall. the third pick I don't remember at all.

Even Rocco Romano who went to Calgary had a good career.

I think the days of the media putting on your event for you is done. They don't have the budget or motivation to do that. It's also not really appropriate in today's world. Their job is to cover news, not create it, even if a sports focus.

And I hate to say it but if you want a better draft then the league has to grow. And for it to meaningfully grow it has to do things differently. They've been stuck in relative neutral for two decades.

The good news is they're trying now. The bad news is fans here are apoplectic when they do.

Don't ask for nicer things if you don't want really want everything that comes with growth. You cannot have both.

Hard to hype and get excited for the CFL draft.

A lot of the top ranked players may have little interest in the CFL, leading to the top chosen players to not be the top ranked players, which looks goofy.

Trying to make it, or the trade deadline, or FA starting anything more than a mention on a website is tough sledding.  Heck, they can't even get pre-season feeds up over three year old Briar semi-finals.

Here's hoping that they can get the stadium feeds and radio broadcast for all the preseason games up on TSN8, the Ocho, or something.  "If you can dodge a wrench" (or will that kill the gate with the STH "must buy" tickets and the buddy tickets they give away...)
