Title: $ MILLION $ winner on KO TDs
Post by: TecnoGenius on July 05, 2025, 07:05:02 AM
In case you skipped the HAM@TOR game, both Grant and Wooden got KO return TDs, no flags.

For the first time ever, someone just won 1 million bucks.  Roy Lyster of BC.

I know the contest hasn't been running forever, but I think at least 10 years (it was "Safeway" branding before).  Junkie can tell us if this is the first time in the history of the CFL that this has happened.

This should generate some buzz for the CFL, as this should make the papers / newsfeed headlines.

Whoever (insurance company?) underwrites this though is a bit miffed right now.  And the premium the sponsor has to pay just went up in a major way!  Might be hard to find a sponsor for next season.  ;D  ;D  ;D

I find it a bit funny it took the booth guys a while to figure out this was a million dollar return.  You'd think they'd have been way more hyped in real time.

In the GDT someone mentioned the dude who won is hopefully not old, because it's a 20 year annuity.

Well... does JG do Canada?

That was me and I have no idea who this person is or anything about him. Because it's an annuity he has a better chance to collect it for 20 years. Obviously even that is no guarantee but it improves his chances than if he's my age. I expect it may show up on the local news today.

A friend said the winner may have been better off sticking with the year of free groceries, with inflation what it is these days  ;D  ;D  ;D

They showed the winner Lyster in the HAM game.  Looks 70.  If that annuity isn't transferable/inheritable then time to call JG Wentworth!

Dude said he wasn't watching the game.  LOL, just lie and say you were watching all games every weekend!  You'd think some buddy would call him right away after that 1st KRTD so they could watch & cheer for a 2nd?  And a year worth of groceries isn't anything to cough at, though at 70 with that frame he ain't eating much  ;D

Happy for the guy though.  Great PR for the league and Save On, and the only loser is the big insurance co that underwrites these things.

The next week of contestants are posted on Save On's website. *spoiler: next 4 contestants are from BC and Alberta*

I'd be surprised if they also didn't send people a heads up email to advise their name was drawn.

It was won once before when Safeway did the promotion. Oct 1999.

IDK if it's transferable which is unfortunate. We didn't get much information about the individual other than he was retired. It's not important that we do. I'm just hoping that winning has a measurable positive impact on his life. $50K a year is significant but of course it depends on an individual's financial status.

Nothing wrong with an older person winning. I was just speculating that it could have more potential impact on a younger person with a wife and a couple of kids.

Ya, but younger people can't afford to shop at "Save On" Foods  ;D  ;D  ;D  It's like having BC prices in WPG!  Yay!

Thanks for that info!  I was wondering about that.  TSN said it was the first time.  Maybe the first time for Save On, but not for the idea in general.

P.S. They really should up it to $2M if it was $1M in 1999.  Inflation has eaten around half the value of the dollar.

So now the actuaries know: this occurs once every 25-26 years.

A million is still quite a chunk of money, and sounds just as impressive as $2million...

(in best Dr. Evil voice)  The prize is ONE MEEELION DOLLARS.
