OL Brett Boyko returns for Edmonton Elks to face Montreal Alouettes
By 3Down Staff -June 18, 2025
The Edmonton Elks will have Canadian offensive lineman Brett Boyko in the starting lineup when they take on the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday night.
The 32-year-old blocker didn't play in Week 1 due to a hamstring injury, giving way to rookie blocker Mark Evans II at right tackle. The six-foot-seven, 305-pound native of Saskatoon, Sask. joined the Elks in 2023 and has since made 29 regular-season starts. The rest of Edmonton's starting lineup has remained unchanged for Week 3.
Left tackle Martez Ivey and receiver Arkell Smith, both of whom limited in practice this week, are listed in the starting lineup. Smith made two catches for 55 yards in Week 1.
The Elks are coming off a bye week after losing to the B.C. Lions their season-opener by a score of 31-14. Tre Ford threw for 178 yards and one interception in the loss and rushed six times for 54 yards.
The Edmonton Elks (0-1) will host the Montreal Alouettes (2-0) at Commonwealth Stadium on Thursday, June 19 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Montreal Alouettes add RB Stevie Scott III to roster against Edmonton Elks
By 3Down Staff -June 18, 2025
The Montreal Alouettes have added American running back Stevie Scott III to the active roster for their upcoming game against the Edmonton Elks.
The native of Syracuse, N.Y. spent the first two weeks of the season on the one-game injured list but will back-up Sean Thomas-Erlington at Commonwealth Stadium. Rookie running back Travis Theis, who rushed for 97 yards and caught three passes for 35 yards in a depth role over Montreal's first two games, will not dress due to a neck injury.
Scott III rushed for 2,543 yards and 30 touchdowns over three collegiate seasons at Indiana University, twice earning All-Big Ten honours. The six-foot-two, 321-pound ball-carrier had NFL stints with the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals prior to joining the Alouettes last year.
Montreal's starting lineup has seen only one change with Charleston Rambo returning to the lineup after missing last week due to personal reasons. American linebacker K.D. Davis, who recorded one special teams tackle last week, has been moved to the practice roster.
The Montreal Alouettes (2-0) will visit the Edmonton Elks (0-1) at Commonwealth Stadium on Thursday, June 19 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Mtl barely starting 7.

Was just about to reply is this guy related to the infamous "fridge" Perry of Chicago Bears fame in the cranemid 1980's! 😆 he became a local hero in their Super Bowl season, but really a glorified o-lineman playing fullback to block for Walter Payton.
tre running already
redemption game for Blanchard??
looking pretty easy for the Als
alexander may be the real deal and he has some great receivers at his disposal.
edmonton D looked on their heels that drive
At least Edmonton has a good punter. I feel like that was a good use of scouting time.
Mtl is polished
wow. some great throws on that drive and montreal used the run to set up the pass. they are looking really good.
we better light up the Elks at home next week. they continue to look lost.

If they develop their Canadians could be good medium to long term
The Elks d frequently looks confused. Their secondary especially.
i know that is a gigantic stadium for the cfl but not many fans there by the looks of things on that last view before the commercial.
Almost forgot about today's tilt. Elks not out of it yet...
Edmonton sports fans are probably sick of sports today.
And spending a lot on playoff tickets the last few months
might be over...gonna take some time to fix this edmonton mess.

Well the Elks will help them save their playoff dollars for hockey, as they are going nowhere this year with Ford under centre, and even when Cody gets in their team looks hopeless. The suffering will continue in Edmonton this year
Big time air ball duck for Ford into double coverage
Tre Ford's 49 (Canadian) passing yards and one pick in the first half is really great for the game. Hopefully they'll compare him to Russ Jackson again in the second half.
all that money spent on defence, how can robbie smith be the highest paid defensive player in the league?
Tre ford....Yeah. He looks pretty bad. He might want to stop running backwards.
But Als are doing some blitzing. No fair.
Elks coaching is not looking robust.
This is discouraging for the league.
I thought Edmonton won free agency. lol

TSN blows loads of hot air.
Hope Tyrell likes losing with his Brother week in week out.
Tre Ford really disappoints me. He is not good at this time.
Ford can't even escape the pocket. LOL
EEs have zero blocking either against these Als playing all plebs early on.
Alexander has a pulled hammy

Tre is only marketable if he can play football. There isn't a single Elks fan who cares if he's Canadian if he passes for 49 yards a half and the Elks go 5-13.
Conversely, ask Als fans if they're happy to have Alexander of they would prefer the team go find a Canadian QB.
Nobody cares about any of that. Winning players are marketable. Losing players aren't. People pay to see teams win Grey Cups. They stay away when they can't.
Als are blitzing repeatedly and the elks don't seem to know they can keep a running back in to help with it. Or an extra onlineman.
Ford not great but he has zero time.
Morgan looks hurt bad
ford reminds me of vernon adams early uears, it took a while for him to become a decent qb

Canadians like to see Canadian players succeed in this league. Understating how important that is. You state things that you believe are true based on your opinion. Doesn't mean it's the opinion of the country. Twin bros of their talent level is a huge marketing factor. You view on Canadian talent is well documented and I don't agree with your take.
Yes success sells tickets. So does talent, hope and a unique Canadian story.
Your idea about MTL fans and a Canadian QB there has zero relevance to my original post.
I am excited how much we continue to develop Canadian talent in this league. Builds community and provides a great deal of pride and hope for next gen.

When you blitz Trevor Harris he makes a 5 yard throw. The answer is not extra offensive lineman or different running back protection.
How many times you going to edit that post? :D

Could be both?
We use a back don't we? For blocking against pass rush. Pretty sure I counted 7 blockers on some plays last game.
TD Als

For sure. But if we put Tre Ford behind our blocking scheme it's not going to look any different. Ball needs to come out before rushers get there. It's a blitz. You usually can't block them all. That's the whole point.

Daquay went for a jog then conveniently fell over.

Maas losing his **** is always a tasty treat.
Nice deep ball there for Elks
Don't look now...
Als D on vaca
Nice short kick

Nice stop for Edm
Going to need the hail mary
Ford hurt his leg on his last scramble but played last series and looked fine
At least all the garbage time stats means we're probably going to get Tre on the short week next Thursday.
Als weakness appears to be at RB, Thomas-Erlington has always been a second rate RB, not very scary, maybe it was a ratio decision but hard to understand them settling on him.
Als win the CFL award for most hyphenated player names with 8.

Not looking good for EDM. If you can't win games, get them in the stadium for other reasons: cheap food, other fun stuff, cheap tickets (esp for kids), etc.

a) Can you legally blow a player up on an OSK? I thought you were allowed to block and get in the way, but not blow up. Not UR? Pretty sure he'll be out with concussion.
b) The ball was touched before the hit, so isn't that illegal interference on a live/loose ball? They got the ball anyhow, but that should have added yardage?
Incredibly insane snag by Rankin in the EZ on the 2PAT earlier in the game. That's what you need in a RB (esp one who isn't yet the established starter): ability to play REC. Them's some good hands!
That may be the catch of the game. Short, but incredibly difficult.
Quote from: Blueforlife on June 20, 2025, 04:00:20 AMFord hurt his leg on his last scramble but played last series and looked fine
He hurt it waaay before that. It was way back a few snaps before they showed him getting his ankle taped up. Didn't seem to be a contact thing: just seemed to mess it up running so hard. Probably will be ok to play next week.
And they say running QB's don't get hurt more... Tell that to Ford & Rourke!
Edit: What's ironic is Ford started playing better after he was hurt, because then he knew (and was probably told) he shouldn't run much, so he became more of a normal pocket passer. Like booth was saying earlier: Ford gets happy feet and reverts to running for his life way too early while the pocket is still safe. Take away his run option and maybe he can actually achieve something from the pocket. (And this was even before MTL went into heavy prevent D.)
Is STE a legit franchise RB? Like as in Brady good? No one has tried to make him a regular desired starter since, I think, HAM (ages ago).
Or is this ratio desperation by MTL? Or does MTL not give too poops about the run game? They haven't exactly been trying to run it much. Maybe with the next Doug Flutie as QB you don't need to have a run game?
I'm not sold on STE, and I hope we attack that "weakness" when we play MTL.

I'm surprised we weren't talking about this in week 1... I was already thinking about it then. I was like "STE, really?". Wouldn't that be nuts if he beats Brady in rushing yards and wins the GC? Yowzers.

went to bed in the third - seeing on twitter attendance numbers of just under 15,000 - which of course looks even worse in a big stadium.

I actually think all the ingredients are there. They have a very physical defense which may be giving up some points but they look really hard to play against. The effort they got from their defensive line was good and Alexander made them look far less effective than they were. That same effort with Collaros in there and they make a few more plays probably since as good as Zach is his legs aren't 27 years old anymore.
They can run the ball and their special teams has been okay. Great against BC. Good enough against Montreal.
The Bombers won't be having fun playing against them on a short week on Thursday. Edmonton can play tougher football than in years past and if Ford could ever figure out how to operate in the pocket or they give up and put in Fajardo, they'll be a tough team.
The get out of jail card for Winnipeg on defense is just to load up the line, show blitz, and take turns dropping out. Montreal did it over and over and over and despite that he had all game to adjust, Ford looked like he only just realized they were doing it with 3 minutes to go and had no idea what to do about it even when he did.
Quote from: Sir Blue and Gold on June 20, 2025, 01:47:54 PMI actually think all the ingredients are there.
Ya, but I think this is the 3rd season in a row people have been saying that. Didn't work out the other 2!
Is EDM starting the "Guaranteed Win" thing yet? ;D ;D ;D Might help the attendance if casual attendees know they could have the next 8 games free! ;) ;) ;)
With 65 bazillion seats in that stadium they should be running every promotion and special and discounts they can for new people. Every youth ticket should be $5, or free with full-price adult ticket.
Edmonton will stick with Ford, struggles and all, and they'll beat Ottawa and maybe Hamilton, but that's it, they won't beat a west team. I think they'd do better with Fajardo in, but they made their choice when they signed ford for 3 years--I think it was a mistake, but I guess time will tell. He's been in the league for going on 3 years, if he doesn't get it this year, will he ever??

Ford is very athletic but he is not yet a good QB. I'm not sure he's even progressing but the Elks have other issues as well.
We play them next week so let's hold off judging whether they can defeat a western opponent. I don't think they can beat us but that's no guarantee.

I don't know how well Fajardo will do in an offence designed for Ford, he can be an effective QB if the offence is designed around his strengths, which is what Maas did for him in Mtl.
I am thinking after they lose 6 games or so, they'll throw that play book out--they should throw it out now, but it's too soon to give up. Lose 6 in a row, and people are going to be grumpy around Edmonton, so changes will happen.
Quote from: dd on June 21, 2025, 04:15:04 PMI am thinking after they lose 6 games or so, they'll throw that play book out--they should throw it out now, but it's too soon to give up. Lose 6 in a row, and people are going to be grumpy around Edmonton, so changes will happen.
They just cleaned house top to bottom this past off-season, the only change they'll pursue is the team name, in the land of turn back time.
Ford has a ton of athletic ability.
First thing he needs to do is to throw the short ball harder instead of throwing it like a hand grenade. It's harder to catch, but it takes time away from the defence which gives the receiver extra room to make more yards. That turns 4 yard plays into 8 yard plays which means more 1st downs which means staying on the field.
Second thing he needs to do is to study, study, study. That will increase his ability to make the right reads in real time and slow the game down for him.
Lastly, he needs a lot more playing time, probably a season of starts.
Elks release Rugamba. Probably more to come although they don't show any players on 1 game IR. Houston is still out there and a few others with CFL experience.
