Calgary Stampeders lose four-time all-star OL Sean McEwen to six-game injured list
By 3Down Staff -August 14, 2024
The Calgary Stampeders have lost Canadian offensive lineman Sean McEwen to the six-game injured list.
The six-foot-three, 299-pound blocker was originally selected in the first round of the 2015 CFL Draft by the Toronto Argonauts and has dressed for 124 career games and made 119 starts, including nine this season at centre. The four-time division all-star and three-time CFL all-star will be replaced by Rodeem Brown for Thursday's game against the Ottawa Redblacks.
The Stampeders have made several other changes on offence, demoting Cam Echols to the practice roster and moving Jalen Philpot into his place at boundary wide receiver. The change will allow Cole Tucker to enter the starting lineup at slotback. Josh Coker has also taken back the starting job at right tackle following the release of Trevon Tate.
Canadian defensive lineman Kwadwo Boahen has returned to the lineup following a stint on the six-game injured list, while linebacker Adam Konar has been added to it with a hamstring injury. The University of Calgary product has made one defensive tackle and six special teams tackles this season.
Calgary has also promoted running back Kylin Hill and fullback Ron Tiavaasue to the active roster after dressing only one player in the backfield in last week's loss to the Toronto Argonauts.
The Calgary Stampeders (4-5) will host the Ottawa Redblacks (5-2-1) on Thursday, Aug. 15 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Brandin Dandridge to make season debut for Ottawa Redblacks vs. Calgary
By 3Down Staff -August 14, 2024
The Ottawa Redblacks will have defensive back Brandin Dandridge in the lineup for the first time this season when they take on the Calgary Stampeders.
The 27-year-old native of Lee's Summit, Mo. completed a stint on the six-game injured list to open the season and missed last week's tie against Saskatchewan with a knee injury. He will start at boundary cornerback, pushing Deandre Lamont to field-side halfback and Bennett Williams to the practice roster.
Dandridge had a career year in 2023, making 24 defensive tackles and five interceptions over 13 games. He was also named the team's nominee for Most Outstanding Special Teams Player after returning 45 punts for 539 yards and a touchdown and 15 kickoffs for 328 yards.
The most prominent change for the Redblacks this week is Jeremiah Masoli taking over under centre, which was previously announced. Dru Brown is out with a foot injury he sustained last week, while Dustin Crum, who played in place of Brown against the Roughriders, will be Masoli's primary backup. Tyrie Adams, who won his only start last season prior to suffering a torn ACL, will be the third-stringer.
Rookie phenom Kalil Pimpleton has been added to the six-game injured list due to a problem with his hand. The 24-year-old native of Muskegon, Mi. caught 18 passes for 315 yards and one touchdown over four games this season and also returned one punt for a touchdown. Jaelon Acklin will take over his spot at boundary wide receiver with Bralon Addison returning to the starting lineup at slotback.
Ottawa has also shuffled its offensive line with Cyrille Hogan-Saindon, a two-year starter at centre, being replaced by Eric Starczala. The University of Guelph product was a seventh-round pick in the 2019 CFL Draft and has since dressed for only two career games with zero starts. Hogan-Saindon is a healthy scratch.
The Ottawa Redblacks (5-2-1) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (4-5) on Thursday, Aug. 15 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Masoli back is huge. I think he'll either light it up or he'll blow another ACL/achilles. I'll be rooting for him: he's one of my faves and has always gotten the short end of the injury stick.
I think a lot of it will depend on his supporting cast. If the OTT D and Rs show up, they should be able to beat a meh CGY team.

However, I've always loved "Born In East LA", great movie.
Ugh what an ugly duck on an easy out. Brutal. Lapo's point is pointless on that play.

Nice drop Barnes. Lol

Ya, we're hoping for that. However, Jake's entire M.O. (since he's not very good) is "game manage" and just not try to throw picks. I'm sure that's the Dickenson The Greater drills into him every week. The whole Maier pep-talk must be "throw no picks! throw no picks!"
Was that the head bob again Techno?
its sure looked like hyman was offside as well

Quote from: TecnoGenius on August 16, 2024, 01:36:21 AMOnly counts under center. You can bob in the gun all you want: see Cody.
Good answer. Just testing you. ;)
CGY has decided to play a non-CGY non-Maier game. Completely throwing OTT out of sorts. No one expects CGY to come out and throw deep bombs all night. Good strategy as long as Maier can keep it up.
OTT will adjust to a deeper game.
Ott with the paper thin D today.
Quote from: TecnoGenius on August 16, 2024, 01:36:21 AMOnly counts under center. You can bob in the gun all you want: see Cody.
To elaborate: Cody always does this little head & butt bob / dance thing in his cadence. It's pretty comical as I've never seen any QB do the butt moves. (No, I'm not watching his butt!!!)
I started noticing it late in '19-'21 when we were battling them for 1st in W all the time because I thought I noticed he had a "tell" when he was going to pass vs hand off. I thought he only butt-danced when passing. Turned out I was wrong, he does it on most snaps.
Masoli throwing accurate darts. He still has that zip!!
seeing a lot of good speed in this game
Neither of these teams with a defense.
The uniform colors are too similar. Red shirt / white pants vs red&white shirt / black pants.
They should have never allowed a 2nd team with nearly the exact same red hue as CGY. Should be more maroon or darker or something.
I don't know that Ottawa has an answer for Hyman.
Quote from: J5V on August 16, 2024, 01:45:00 AMNeither of these teams with a defense.
I hope it's just a case of OTT being caught off guard. The DBs can start playing deeper and the FS can stay back. Of course, that's CGY's plan so they can open up the middle...
OTT's D is decent. They won't keep giving these freebies to Maier. Plus, if Maier is waiting for the deep stuff, OTT could try hidden blitzes to catch Maier while he's waiting.
Quote from: J5V on August 16, 2024, 01:47:42 AMI don't know that Ottawa has an answer for Hyman.
Oilers let him go?
Will this be the high-scoring barnstormer of the week? Or will that be the @BC game?
I'm going to find it very interesting how CGY's O progresses through their battle plan. So far they're going to a shorter/ground game for this series.
Interesting that Logan is listed as #1 RB but Hill is getting most of the O touches. And Logan is doing the returns? Weird. CGY doesn't specify a returner on the DC so I guess anything goes, but I don't like showing a #1 and then not playing him as specified.
What is that?
Uh oh! Lapo: "irregardless" :o :o :o :P

I honestly feel depth charts are very outdated.
Players are rotated in and out. You play from different formations with different personnel groupings on almost every play on O and D.
Other than QB and the OL, a depth chart is pretty useless these days.
OTT needs to stop getting tricked by Maier's cadence. Typical Dickenson, trying to steal free yards all the time. Well, it's the smart play. Wise up OTT! We need CGY to lose!
What a terrible throw by Maier. Lucky that wasn't picked.
Wow. 6'7"? Have we ever had a receiver that tall in the CFL?

something. Didn't the league crack down on overt shenanigans a couple of seasons ago? Like what's to keep us from listing Wilson as QB #1 in 2 days? And always list Johnny as #1 RB.

After the horrible MTL game debacle with the fumble/notfumble Lapo said the league has clamped down and said let all of these play out. Kinda like the rules have always said: "must be certain" before whistling dead.
Better late than never.
However, the extra fumble scrambling can lead to extra injuries. But I strongly prefer letting it play out.

Ya, he's a bit dry for sure. Like the anti-Dustin, eh?
But he's perfect for the new/medium fan who is truly interested in learning the game. What I wouldn't have given for Lapo in the booth when I was getting back into CFL 10 years ago. I would have been lapping up all of his wisdom.
I still learn stuff from Lapo's free-association brain dumps, but I would have learned a lot more when I knew nothing!
The downside is it may turn off the uber-fan and super-casual fan. The latter may want to be in brain shutoff mode, and resent any attempt to learn.

So excited! My son was even excited and we were high-fiving after that kick. He usually doesn't get excited watching TV games. He likes them in person. But we were stoked for that kick, especially since Ward is maybe 75% beyond the 50.
And he made it a squeaker, sneaking inside the left upright.
Everyone who stayed up to watch got a super entertaining game! High scoring.
Big props to Masoli for that thanking the CFL fans & league at the end. I never gave up hope on him. A true CFL star who just got stuck with a fragile body. A bit ironic since he's such a stout beefy guy (for a QB).
Masoli looked really good. All that hard work in re-hab paid off for him. It was only one game but he'll do well while Brown if injured.
Winning that game really helped the Bombers.

Almost. Calgary will have a game in hand. I'd expect we'd still be ranked 4th but we're closing the gap.

Nope. We will both have 10 games played.
I wonder if Ottawa has a QB controversy when Brown is ready to return. Maybe Brown might become available.I am sure the Bombers would be interested if Ottawa decides to go with Missoli.

You're right. When I looked at the standings earlier they showed the Stamps with a 4 win 5 loss record.
So if we win ( and I expect we will ) then we will be in 3rd place. West is really getting to be a tight race.
With the Elks getting better I'm not sure what to expect in the back to back Elk / Stamps games. Bombers next 3 games include back to back against the Riders.
Depending on how those series go, there may be some big shifts in the standings.

I don't think so. Masoli turns 36 in the next week. Brown is the future. Masoli becomes a # 2 QB capable of winning when and as needed. Injury history will be a concern even if it's just a fear of another problem.
Bombers wouldn't be able to absorb Brown's contract and Brown wants to start. He's under contract so he can't decide where he might be traded if that happened. However, I'd bet the farm that Ottawa doesn't make that move.

My thoughts are that Brown returns to Winnipeg when both his and Collaros' contracts expire at the end of 2025.

Well maybe but a lot can happen between then and now. If the Redblacks continue to have a successful 2024 and into 2025, why would he leave. He'd be entrenched as the # 1. Going back to Winnipeg would be a totally different team ( roster wise ).
If the Bombers win the 2025 Grey Cup and the Redblacks finish last, that could change decisions etc etc.
You can never tell what will happen in free agency if players actually reach free agency.

If that happened and Collaros calls it quits Brown back here could be a dream!

Just my hopes and dreams. I'm sad that the best QB we've ever developed didn't line up with the end of Zach's career. I want him to carry on the torch and keep this thing going after our home Grey Cup win in '25.

I'd rather have Tre Ford, tbh, but Brown isn't a bad choice either.

I don't think I would, but that's not on the table. If Ford leaves Edmonton it's after this current season.

Dieter Brock says hi as well. But sure in the last 25 years of so, Brown looks like he's going to become a really good QB.
I wouldn't mind seeing him back after 2025, but who knows what happens before that. Maybe Wilson is the " next " great young QB.

Well, and then there was a guy named
Ralph Dieter. And others.
But, Dru is the best we've developed lately, for sure.
I have only been watching and understanding the bombers since about 1979...
I can't speak to a guy like Kenny Ploen as I didn't see him play or follow his progression.
Who really is the BEST QB we have developed? Best has to include the usual QB Stats plus wins and championships.
Was McManus a better Qb than Brock? He has more yards passing, more championships- played lots longer

I am 100% too young to remember those guys. But if you have to reach back decades for the nearest example, I'm comfortable with my claim.

I will do you one better - I got to see Ploen play at Univ of Iowa. I got to go to the games as a reward for delivering papers for the Des Moines Register. I got to see Bobby Jeter, Kenny Ploen, Ray Jauch and a lot more I can not remember. It was a great experience.
How in the world did Acklin come up with the ball when I thought for sure Demario Houston had it picked?
Here is the catch I'm alluding to ...

Questions like that are complex. McManus was brought to the CFL by the Bombers. He showed a lot of promise but was lost in free agency to the Lions. He was not immediately successful until he went to the Esks. Then he continued his success in Hamilton.
OTOH, Brock became the starter very early and continued as a starter during his time in Winnipeg. In that sense he was developed in Winnipeg where as McManus only gained success post departure.
Brock had that last CFL year in Hamilton and then a season with the Rams. He had one of the strongest arms in the CFL and even won arm wrestling competitions against big OL and DL. I suppose he a more physical player than McManus while McManus was possible a better QB in the long run.
That has nothing to do with length of career. Everything depends on what your measuring stick uses to gauge " best ".
K.Ploen spent his entire career in Winnipeg and played multiple positions before landing the starting role as a QB. I'd say he was the most athletic QB that was developed in Winnipeg. Multiple Grey Cup wins and a few losses.
Before my time but check the info on Jack Jacobs. Outstanding and another player that played multiple positions which was common in that era.
Jimmy Van Pelt I did see him play in the same era as Ploen. Also a player that did multiple things.
Man those were the days

Tre Ford is intriguing for sure but Brown I see as the more consistent pass thrower overall.

Luck + skill? That may have won the game. Amazing catch. My son loved it, he said they were both sitting on their butts to make the catch!
It dawned on me after that game that in fantasy if you were to pick an OTT R you should have picked Acklin because he's pretty much the only one Masoli has ever played with before (many years in HAM). The chemistry between them was obvious. I'm sorry I didn't think of it ahead of time.

If Masoli wins every game with this panache until Dru returns, they very well may roll with the hot hand. Dru had bad games, don't forget. He's still learning: Masoli knows it all. Why switch to .500-.700 Dru when if you have .800-.900 Masoli? All depends on the next few weeks.

And Zach is, what, 35? So same age as Masoli basically? I bet Zach starts in '25, and maybe more (maybe not for us?).
If Masoli finally is done with the freak injuries he totally can be a franchise starter. Yes, more future with Dru, but he could also turn into Jennings: looked great on a great team, struggles with a mediocre team.

Zach is under contract for next season but could absolutely retire at any time.
Masoli and anyone in their upper 30's, isn't done with injuries. They're just getting warmed up. He doesn't say he's going straight into coaching when he's done though!
Masoli can be good to great at times, but I NEVER felt he was the top QB in the CFL at any time. Too often he chokes in big moments even when he WAS healthy. So don't make him the second coming now after one game. That is totally foolish. Brown has earned the right to be the starter as he was the winning QB all prior to this last game and had the RedBlacks in second place in the stronger east division this year. No small feat after they have been brutal the past several years. BROWN is the future for Ottawa. Masoli is a great backup if he maintains his play and probably best he is the backup so he can remain healthy with less chances of getting knocked around too much.

I get what you're saying, with age etc. But in the '21 GC he came in after Dane got hurt in the 1st Q and was a Nichols fingertip away from winning it all with zeroes on the clock. That's with the whole post-season relegated to #2 unit in practice! That, plus all his reg season play, is top QB to me.
They could squeeze a few more seasons out of him like we did "washed up" Zach. Who knows. I'd be thrilled to have Masoli as our #2 if Strev wasn't here (or heading into the post-season). OTT has a very strong QB room and they are probably spending less than us!
