Title: Bomber and CFL Player award discussion
Post by: bwiser on October 24, 2023, 02:07:59 PM
The CFL player awards will be announced soon. Heres my Bomber choices
Top O lineman- Bryant
Top defensive player-Jefferson
Top rookie-Bennett
Top Special teams-Castillo
Top Canadian-Olivera
Most outstanding-Olivera

Bombers don't have a lot of outstanding rookies this year so I went with Bennett. Olivera has the best chance of being the league rep as top Canadian. Olivera's closest rival for outstanding player may be on his own team in Colleros who I would have no problem with if he is chosen over Olivera.

I would go:

Most Outstanding Player: Zach Collaros
Most Outstanding Defensive Player: Deatrick Nichols
Most Outstanding Canadian Player: Brady Oliveira
Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman: Chris Kolankowski
Most Outstanding Special Teams Player: Janarion Grant
Most Outstanding Rookie: Anthony Bennett

My 2 cents

MOP Zach-only as Bray would have no chance against Kelly
MODP Jefferson
MOC Brady
MOOL Kolakowski
MOST Grant
MOR Sheehan....slim pickings this year

If based on strategy, I don?t think Zach beats Kelly either. May as well go with what?s merited and have Brady for both MOP and MOC.

I took Castillo over Grant mainly because Grant missed too much time. Grant had been outstanding when he has played.

How do you pick against Bryant?  I'd like to nominate the whole line, though.
Even with his injuried, Houson will win the INT title, and had a lot of plays made
With no real rookie starters, sure, Bennett
With no Miller, there isn't really a ST standout on a coverage side, and Castillo has had a very good year.
No doubt Brady is the most outstanding Canadain, and could vie for MOP, but I'm not sure anyone votes him for both, so almost a consolation prize
Without Collaros, we are not WDC so there's that... only a QB can beat a QB... He will win the west, Kelly takes it, though.

My point is he isn't likely to win MOP so we should get him some bling to show how much we appreciate his efforts.  If he wins MOP then he can give his medal back and it can be used for next year for Holm lol.  I might such at spelling you be the judge.  More a numbers guy.

Yes, if you are "voting strategically" then Brady will have a better chance of beating Kelly.  So Brady gets our nod by merit and by strategy.  The league will simply not give Zach the award over feel-good, high-intensity, younger-generation, "new guy" Kelly.  But they might for Brady!  As he's also a "feel-good, high-intensity, younger-generation, new guy".

I suppose if you want a "participation trophy" type thing, then you split the award with MOC Brady, MOP Zach, but I don't like that approach.

MOD is the hardest choice... I might go for Biggie as he's had a big resurgence.  He's making plays he was having problems with the last couple of seasons.  He is slower (as in running, not twitchiness) now, but that's literally his only remaining limitation.

I'd also be fine with Nichols, Willie, Walker, Holm.  Holm might actually get it, as the "newer" guy and the fact he surprised everyone.

ST?  How about Exume?  I think he was a late pickup, but he's always in around the tackle.

Was a little surprised the Bombers selected Brady for MOP over Zach however it wasn't unanimous either.    He was my choice for both with no disrespect to Zach either who isn't far off from his 2022 MOP season.    My suspicion is that Chad Kelly will win MOP due to the hype he and the Argos have drawn throughout the league especially in the East.    Brady should win the MOC award hands down.     I don't see us winning any other awards though....WJ is a long shot for MOD

Betts and Brady out of the West for MOC may be a 50/50 call

Whichever player does get the nod should win at the league level

The rookie pickings were slim so Sheahan makes as much sense as Bennett.

I knew it was going to be Brady.

As for Yoshi, so happy he finally gets some cred.  He may have whiffed a few more times than Big Stan, but I think he brings a ton more fire and morale to the O.  Just look at him strutting and running around the field to fire up the team!  I have no idea where he gets the energy at his age and size.

If the final selection isn't just based on stats, Yoshi could very well win it.  He's also the last guy you want to see barrelling towards you on a run block play.

To be fair, as I said in that GDT, the dude he spit on clearly leaned in an horked a loogie at him first; clear as day on camera.  Stegall said on TSN last year that you can let anything pass as a player, except spitting.  Spitting demands retaliation.

I think Brady objectively deserves MOP. Has played every game, having an historic year for one of the 2 best teams in the league, a dual threat both passing and running. He's far in front of the other running backs in the league in terms of productivity. Kelly's stats are inferior to Zach's. Unfortunately, the pro Toronto bias will prevail.

To me the clincher for Brady over Zach is Brady beat AH33's single season yardage records.  And the league looks for that too, doing "standout" things.  For Kelly, he has the single-season win record, plus the only game they were really threatened in (vs WPG) they sat Kelly so he wouldn't risk taking the L to tarnish his record.

In Brady v Kelly, I'm not positive Kelly will win.  Likely, because of TOR bias, but not a slam dunk.  I don't find Kelly very likeable (mean resting face, attitude) vs Brady who helps mistreated puppies and is eminently likeable.

It is interesting and laudable that only one person had only one incorrect player named in the Blue Bomber player award nominations.  Out of respect, I will not name that member except to say that he probably the most knowledgeable member on the forum.  He likely is too humble to accept such recognition but suffice it to say, congratulations and accolades are appropriate and deserved.  A high degree of player performance assessment and a keen eye, intelligence and experience are qualities that, while desired by many, but realized by few, clearly resulted in the high score by the member in question. He will, by his request, remain anonymous.  ;D 8)

I find this sad considering Chad didn't lead the league in either yards, %, att, comp, TD (10 less than ZC..only 23!), and had a lower eff rating than ZC.   He's 5th in completions and attempts and he didn't play all the games.

ah it just makes me annoyed even thinking about it.

Betts is a good player...deserving of nomination.
