Quote from: Waffler on November 01, 2026, 04:38:12 PMIdeally you would want Kurtis Rourke to be tutored by Harris for a year, he wouldn't be ready right out of the box. But then the cost of both? Some really tough decisions around the league at QB. Just a big separation right now between the top few and the rest of the pack. One thing we do know, a top QB on  the open market now costs a million dollars.

Don't think Rourke#2 will be getting paid anymore than Elgersma and he's a few years away from being a starting QB, so the Riders may not have any choice but to hang onto Harris for another season.

As a future OC I'd prefer Harris over Zach, his dad was a football coach and he seems better schooled than Zach who lives and dies on the long pass.

Ideally that is true but as you mentioned the SMS is a factor. Rourke was perceived as having a higher upside than his brother in BC. So it's not entirely an issue a team could live with some early learning bumps in year 1.

At this point we don't even know whether Harris will retire or Rourke will come north. It will just be a few interesting conversations during the off season. In some cases that will start during this month.

I've already noticed that Shepley is retiring in Toronto. There will be quick announcements from players as teams are eliminated.

Rourke # 2 won't be getting a big CFL deal in year 1. How ready he is being able to start is debatable. It's just guesswork at the moment. His brother was as close to an immediate starter as a newbie can be.

Riders were smart in drafting Kurtis Rourke, who many have suggested has a bigger upside than his brother Nathan, which is hard to believe!! It would be great for the league to have another talented young Qb to watch, a brother no less of one of the leagues best Qb's, but he'll likely exhaust his NFL opportunities first and that could take a year or 2

Agree, I remember the CFL used to have limits on first round draft pick salaries, not sure that still applies or not.

My worry would be throwing him to the wolves. He has been injured more than you'd expect for a young guy. Hasn't been able to suit up for an NFL regular season game yet. Pretty much a season and a half in the tub.

Yes that is an issue. As far as the NFL it's also a reason to cut bait. There will be a number of new QB's in the 2027 draft and he may no longer be in their plans.

As I suggested I don't know if Harris will retire or how SMS will impact the decisions for all concerned. He could be trade bait ( Redlblacks ) have an extra 1st round pick.

Notice how the CFL no longer picks up any semi-experienced or second string NFL QB's, I guess the drop off in pay is just too much to make it worth their while. The last 2 might have been Vince Young and Johnny Manziel.

Hundreds of American QB's graduate from college every year and yet the CFL has a hard time finding even a handful that they can turn into pros. No lack of supply, seems like an identification and  preparation problem.

Hard to compete with NFL money but Kelly just got a $5.5M deal and we expect SMS to go up. Nothing prevents us from paying more for American QB's that aren't playing in the NFL.

We have about 10 on our Neg list and Pavia has recently been discussed.

Yup, I think it was Kate who said it... we can finally offer QBs (and other players) what they need to come here or stay here.  I've been harping on this for years.  My main beef was good NAT OL retiring -- pay them more and they will stay.  But works just as well for luring QB's.
