5Y to Take Zach Out Isn't Good Enough

You guys need to touch grass. It was a regular ol' roughing the passer. Zach has been bubble wrapped for two years now.

Yeah - respectfully disagree.  ball gone, wraps up Zach and takes a few steps, then forces down into the ground with full weight.

20+ years ago that was a regular ol' roughing the passer.  Not anymore.  That was intent to injure.

BC defensive lineman Nathan Cherry has been fined for committing unnecessary roughness on Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros.

a) Because they didn't say "max fine" that means it's probably like only $1-$2k.

b) Should have been a suspension.

So BC took 5 yards penalty in-game and their backup DT gets a slap on the wrist fine that the team will reimburse him for under the table.  Job well done Cherry!

What a joke.

No way in any league that hit results in a suspension.  TBH even a fine is a bit much.  It's a penalty yes but like others said this type of hit happens routinely.

Think of it this way: if Cherry had just pushed Zach hard right there he still would have gotten the 15Y penalty.  The fact it was so late was enough.  What we have instead is the late contact PLUS the pancake.  And yet it's still only 15Y and a slap on the wrist.  He got the season-ending (possibly career-ending) pancake in "for free".

IOW, if you already hit the QB late, you might as well pancake or concuss him because there is no additional penalty for doing so.  This sets up a malevolent incentive.

Perhaps RTP should be penalized in parts, a 15Y penalty for each of the aspects listed in the rulebook.  And if you break 3 aspects, instant DQ.  And I would apply that across the whole game, not just 1 hit.

So:
15Y for being late
15Y for "full weight"
...
more for any other of the ~10 aspects of RTP.

And if a QB is taken out of the game then command needs to pause to make sure they don't miss anything.

And 2+ aspects in 1 game by any player is immediate suspension.

It wasn't 5 yards to take Zach out. It was the standard 15.

Getting injured isn't relevant. Some QBs can take that hit; some can't.

It's tackle football, not touch football. You can't remove injuries. They are part of the game.
Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

That's ridiculous, physics is real, tell us how he should have absorbed that pancake?

It was 5, there was an offsetting hold or IG or something.

And yet the league, the rules, and the CFLPA are constantly harping on QB (and any player) safety...

Not surprisingly their rules failed once again, the league should have a year-end review of all incidents were QB's are injured and adjust their policies to reduce them every year.  Nobody is going to argue preserving the starting QB's health is the difference between good and bad games in the CFL, including the officials.
