Zach will be our QB in 2027(?)

My hunch is that Zach will retire after this season.  I believe the Bombers are gearing up for that in view of the attention they gave to recruiting Taylor Elgersma, the return of Dru Brown, Zach's injury history plus 13 quarterbacks on their negotiation list.  Free agency also factors in.

Based on the teams overall performance this year (final results yet to be determined), they may also be considering him in a coaching role in the future as well.  Most would agree Zach's physical condition is not conducive to much more playing action and he seems to have similar experience and qualifications to Buck Pierce in terms of future coaching possibilities, if he has the desire to do so.

They also could be holding him out to get some sideline experience too.

Lots of speculation but I expect more changes will be forthcoming for 2027.

Quote from: Tecno on October 05, 2026, 01:24:11 AMI think Love has more a chance of making it than Frost.  And I'd peg Love's chances at 5%...

And I'm talking #1.  As backups and perennial "in development" guys (think Dom Davis), then ya, Frost & Love might stick around a few seasons.  But neither will be a franchise #1 star, and I'll take your gentlemen's bet on it.

Powell is the next potential star.  Other than that, the next stars aren't even in the league right now.  That's the problem.
Yeah it's a crap shoot to be a #1, I get what you mean.  It's why they get half a mil lol.

The bet was in the league after 2 years, now you changed it to a star, don't be a CFL comish and move the posts without asking 1st lol.

He doesn't have "it".  You see "it" the first few times they play.  There is no "it" here.  Besides Calvillo, and maybe Cody, no one ever becomes a star without quickly showing "it".
It takes a long time to learn the CFL game. Frost has the advantage of playing while he learns. Too soon to say.

It is starting to look like the CFL will have have and have not teams based solely on QB. This is why I feel we need to look at getting Kelly. Right now there are 3 elites and he's one of them. The chance only comes around every few years.

Unfortunately I think Zach is done. We can't have a QB that gets injured every couple games from a slide, touch or tap. Brown doesn't look like the answer. He's at best an average backup QB. Elgersma hasn't shown much either. Perhaps it's not the players we have so much as the coaching. Perhaps a QB coach would help. I don't think Condell will stick around long. Younger hasn't shown he can do much either. A cleanup has to be done to correct the ship.

Since 2015 I have been using a drive based analysis to grade QBs. I was able to recreate drive results dating to 2004 prior to the 2023 purge of CFL data when Genius became involved with stats.

Fans & media alike are fascinated by raw numbers such as passing yards, TD passes, TD/INT ratio. Some will look at analytics and cite completion percentage or pass efficiency rating (what a horrible metric that is). There is much more to QB performance with ultimate goal being wins. A QB can only control what happens on offence and it boils down to how productive is the offence each time it possesses the ball. The ultimate indicator of productivity is points per drive.

  • It doesn't matter how you move the ball down the field whether it be pass, run or penalty.
  • It doesn't matter if a TD is scored via pass or run

Prior to 2022, when the CFL starting gifting offences with free yardage, scoring 2 points per drive was considered elite. Only 18 times (2004-2021) did a QB record a points per drive of 2.0 or more in a single season (minimum 100 drives). During that era, 1.55 points per drive was the CFL average.

Since 2022, there has been another 18 including the 7 who are currently at 2.0 or more. The CFL average during the modern era is 1.82 points per drive and it keeps trending upwards.

This season, the CFL average is 2.09 points per drive with 7 out of 8 QBs, with at least 100 drives, at or above 2.00 points. Chad Kelly is ranked #7 on that list, hardly elite. There are 3 elite QBs, Davis Alexander, Nathan Rourke & Vernon Adams.

Always love seeing the updated versions, Junkie. Thanks!

Interesting to see Frost and Brown at about the same level.  This is some good data and fun to look at.

There is no one available.

Ottawa, Winnipeg and possibly Toronto will need QBs.

Kelly will sign with either Toronto or Ottawa. The remaining two teams will have to fight over MBT, Dru Brown, Jake Maier and Nick Arbuckle.

BC let their back-up go
Edmonton - Taylor Powell signed a two year contract
SSK has no one to back up
Hamilton - Harrison Frost QB rating is 85. Tre Ford isn't good and is signed for another year
Montreal has caleb evans....

Reminds me of 2014 when we end up signing Drew Willy.

Unfortunately 2 back-up QBs do not equal a starter. We are better picking one of these guys (or two) and putting the money into the offensive line.

Who did the Lions let go?

The Als have this guy as their backup.

Not crazy enough to argue stats with you but... I think Kelly has an elite arm but no running game. All his drives depend on his arm. Other teams can grind more. I just go by the eyeball test and Kelly gets the ball there, granted he could use some restraint and cut down his intercepts.

I agree that Adams COULD be elite but is the most inconsistent of the top guys.

Junkie, the point isn't so much what current qbs are elite, it's that half the starters are retiring soon. And there aren't any star quality new guys or backups to replace them.

Trevor
Zach
Vaj
Cody
Bo

Will mostly be gone in 1 to 3 years. 2 for sure in the next 2 years. All of them in the next 5.

The CFL overall has been crap at finding new stars. We hit about 1 every 2 seasons, with none in the last 2.

And I see no indication that this year's crop will produce any.

This is concerning since we are one of the teams with a retiring star.

Kelly and dinwiddie are practically married. You could offer Kelly 500k more than OTT and he'd still go there. Forget Kelly.

Not to mention our boy scout board and gm would never allow it.

Not saying it's a bad idea, it's just that it will never happen.

Kelly is on the cusp of being elite if he could cut back on the turnovers
