Quote from: Blue In BC on September 14, 2026, 04:22:47 PMAll of that is true but I've pointed out we don't have the best receiving group either. We don't have that " Lawler " player that scares the defence and prevents crowding the LOS.

Spending the most doesn't always equate to having the best players, your Lawler reference is a prime example, he recently signed a contract that will pay him $1 million over 3 years but in 6 completed seasons he's gained 1k yds only 2 times.

Currently this season he's the 22nd top receiver in terms of yards gained, behind 3 Bomber receivers and teammates Keric Wheatfall and Kiondre Smith.

Everyone acknowledges he's a great receiver but him being on a team seems to have no correlation to team success.

Very true. Teams have to decide where to spend money and where to improve a given roster. That said a player can be the " best " but on the wrong team to utilize his strengths. In the case of Lawler, the TiCats lost BLM so that changes the equation.

I'd disagree that when he was on the Bombers that he didn't influence our success.

4 seasons in Winnipeg and we won the Grey Cup twice and lost twice. Since he left we have NOT made it to the Grey Cup. Take what you want from that in a team game.

In 2025 Lawler had nearly 1450 yards and the TiCats finished 1st. This year with an injured BLM not so much and chances are they miss the playoffs all together.

Quote from: Blue In BC on September 14, 2026, 05:35:56 PMHow do you know when you have Brady 2.0 if you aren't looking for him. I'm not suggesting Peterson is that guy but how would we know? Obviously most of us don't even get to go watch practice.

Some of us suggested he should sit for a game and get healthy. That would also allow live reps for Peterson to see where he fits into future plans.

Lawler was also over paid here and now in Hamilton. The difference was that while he was here we went to the Grey Cup.

You often use the phrase " worth every penny ". That's interesting since it's not about what any player earns but how it impacts the roster across the board.

By my definition he's over paid whether he deserves that amount or not, is not the point.
Peterson is good insurance for now.  I have no interest with him in the lineup unless Brady is hurt and can't go.  He came on the lineup and got no touches from what I seen.  Not worth having him come on imo.  He has shown flashes we have an idea already what he can do.

Some suggested that Brady be sat a few games ago to give a look at Peterson / change of pace.  I disagreed then and still do about that.  The club was struggling and people were looking for change in an area that didn't need it.

Yup he is worth every penny and isn't overpaid imo.  All time great Cdn backs don't grow on trees, nor are they cheap. He earns his cake each year, just like Harris did.

Lawler was paid what he is worth.  As I mentioned his passport and consistency does tilt it a bit.  I was ok with him walking because we didn't have the SMS for him at the time.

We could argue that T.Ford, Desjarlais or Goosen were worth every penny that we didn't pay. Money may not have been the only reason they left but " over paid " is a slippery slope.

Sample size for Peterson is very small. He didn't get any reps in the 1st game against the Riders. Whether he has a future or not, he may choose to leave next off season. What the coaches see in practice IDK. He may be nothing more than short term emergency depth.

Sure you pass on top paid players all the time, but you don't pass of all time great imo, it's a fine line, I agree on your take on Peterson, I hope he sticks for one more year, I think he would get a few more reps next year, in the end Brady 2.0 is likely a few years out but I do like slow roasting our guys, he might walk yes

Peterson is a potential free agent even if he ends up on the AR at the end of the season. If he finishes the season on the PR then he becomes a free agent immediately.

Oliveria probably has another 2 or 3 season in his career, barring serious injury. Potentially a little longer but a lot can happen between then and now.

He has 2 more years left in his contract and turns 30 next August.

Passing on all  time great players happens all the time. We passed on A. Harris, Jeffcoat, Bighill and J. Grant. We even passed on C. Roberts.  It is a fine line but it's business eventually.

Poor examples to where Brady is at currently imo for the most part.

Harris was almost done.  Jeffcoat was injury prone and not an all time great.  Bighill was hurt and washed up.  Grant a decent comparison.  Charlie was a weird one but he didn't do anything after he left.

Brady will easily outlast AH33, barring injury.  AH went to pot mentally and physically after his divorce.  Moral of the story: pick your life companion better, and maybe don't get married @IGF.

And on AH's best day he didn't look after his body as well as Brady.  Brady has taken it to next level.  However, going much past 33 at a high level is a pretty tough ask for a RB.

Quote from: bunker on September 14, 2026, 04:16:29 PMBy the same token, I think Zach makes the O-line look worse than it is. He hangs onto the ball too long, is reluctant to throw it away out of bounds, has poor mobility relative to other QBs, and has poor pocket presence, all of which lead to more sacks.

Zach's "holding on" isn't as big a deal as his lack of mobility.  When there's an OL failure it's usually in less than 2.7s.  That's the OL/blockers fault.  They need to give Zach the magic time.  After that, then blame Zach for not launching it.  (I time every pressure and sack on Zach.)

I agree though that Zach needs to channel his inner Nichols more often and chuck it in the stands.  Maybe since they instituted the $500 fine for stand-chucking the QBs have been Nichols-shy??  I can't recall the last time someone chucked it into the stands.  Sidelines, yes, but that risks IG, which we've been seeing a lot of recently.

If Zach had even a modicum of escapability up the middle (like Cody or Alexander) then the DTs wouldn't be able to do as many B gap shenanigans.  Right now every DL plays us pretty wide/spaced, even though they do often play DEs on contain.  It's that 5th rusher that usually gets him...

Kramdi just did it on Saturday (took two tries for him  ;D ).  Okay, not a qb, but I assume he still gets the $500 fine (I didn't realize that was a thing), and he's making a lot less than Zach so I doubt the fine is the biggest deterrent.

Zach and Nichols to name two are bigger overpays causing more issues than Brady.

Harris played 12 seasons. The last 2 in Toronto where we could say he was not what he used to be. Oliveria is now in his 7th season. So anther 3 sounds about right.

RB's don't often last for 10 seasons in the modern CFL. Age, injury and SMS come into play. It's all speculation when a given player starts to decline but RB's would be at the top of the list due to the amount of contact every play.

We'll see how long Brady can go. I have some doubts. He'll get every opportunity as a Canadian but he can't lose any of the foot speed he's got or we probably won't like the results. I'd say he has juuuust enough to be effective now. He also plays a really physical style and has for his whole career. So unlike Harris, who extended his career by bulking up and turning into much more of an interior runner than he was earlier, Brady is just going to have to keep taking hits and running through A and B gaps. Could he do a bunch more years from here? Maybe. Can I see a world where he hits the cliff earlier than that like every other great running back before him? Maybe also.

Running back production is mostly a zero sum game. It's good until it's not. What seems pretty clear is we'll at least get another season at about this level from him next year. That's about as far as anyone could probably crystal ball it without fooling themselves.

For me it's about the quality of the roster around him and SMS. Paying him $300K next year is fine if we finish in the play offs and show well. We still have a chance this year but odds are low.

Teams find youth and skill on ELC contracts. They just need to find a few of those each off season in order to pay the big contracts of veterans.

Brady has stated he would like to play 10 seasons in interviews, I'm sure he will and maybe more if the team can remain competitive.
