Ya good for him.  This will also help ease many CFL fans into DAZN, which is of course critical them to have any degree of success.  Strev is popular among more than just WPG fans.  Other fans always hated AH33, but no one ever hated Strev.  Every person out there can appreciate a guy who wins playoffs and cups with a broken foot, and his aww shucks country boy motif is endearing.

I'd call this a win for both Strev and DAZN.

Chris Streveler has made some in-roads with his NFL coverage and is a motivational speaker, so this works well in bringing a wider audience into the CFL.

Very well spoken from what I've seen of him so far. My only beef is he needs to stop the holding the mic to his mouth and shaking around when he does his short reels, unless that's an attempt to look "authentic".

Watched his interview with Ed Tait yesterday on the Bomber podcast, Chris is truly an inspirational character who pursuits his goals and makes things happen, driven by his strong work ethic and big personality. Imagine in a few short months he goes from a self made podcast to a broadcast career on a national stage, easily doubling the earning potential he had as a football player.

Its good to see Strevler get this opportunity but I wish it was on TSN and not some streaming service many CFL fans including myself, hope fail. We are already getting screwed over by Sportsnet  with their Sportsnet plus covering 9 Jets game next season and Amazon doing 4 games. I don't want to pay for something I am currently getting for free. I have a Jets half pack and will be paying for games I am attending.

I wouldn't bet money on that. Even tsn guys are always complaining about the no pay. I'd bet they are barely clearing 100k.

And dazn is just some dumb internet streaming, not a real broadcaster, so they'll probably pay worse than tsn.

However, it does get strev's foot in the door. That can only help his future career path.

Why? Because once the teams get that free sweet money, then what on earth will happen if it disappears in a couple of years? If they have added 1 million to the sms by then and teams have adjusted to not caring about butts in seats, then the CFL will be in its worst fiscal crisis ever if the rug is pulled.

I'll leave aside the whole 'the league should avoid broadcast revenue because this may actually be a secret plot to destroy Canadian football from within' thing and just suggest that choosing to not make more money today because someday you might make less money is not generally the hallmark of successful business.

There is such a thing as getting ahead of your skis. The sms is like a fixed expense in a business, like say the mortgage and maintenance on a building. Once you take it on, you can't easily shed it.

If the league, because of dazn, jacks up the sms by 1m each team, and teams and rosters all adjust to that, then what on earth happens if dazn pulls out, whether early or after the x year term.

How on earth would the teams and players adjust to a sudden massive drop in sms. Because it's not like tsn would step in and pay the difference.

It's just something to think about. And something surely the league heads have considered if they are fiscally responsible.

I wonder if the league wouldn't be better served by slowly doling out the windfall over a 5+ year period.  Rather than giving every team like 1M more SMS in year 1 of DAZN, maybe make it a couple hundo thou.  Little bit more next year.  Etc.  Keep some in the kitty for the post-DAZN era and make it not so huge you can't claw it back a bit later should it all fall apart.

So few people ever consider the "and then what" question, and that's half the problems in the world today.  I started working in the dot com bubble/bust and I saw, first hand, a ton of companies that never thought of "and then what".  There's lots of free money sloshing around right now, just like 1999, with the AI boom, etc.  And it can all disappear just as fast... DAZN is a function of all that internet/streaming bubble going on right now, that's for sure.

DAZN has been around for a decade, it's not the flash in the pan you seem to think.  While not huge in Canada, it's well established in overseas markets; it was quite popular in Germany on my 2018 - 2020 stint there.  We may not like it (I don't), but it's not some junior start up.

Doesn't have to be a startup to be a beneficiary of loose financial conditions.  Enron, RIM, Nortel were all well established companies in the 90's.  Where are they?

Everything is great while the music it playing.  Does anyone think at all about the day that it stops?  I guess it's been a generation since 1999, so the young up'n'comers don't even know it's a possibility.  Us older folk are supposed to know better.

Not trying to make this a treatise in economics, I just hope that the braintrust is actually thinking about such things.  There is nothing easier in the world to replace or bankrupt than yet another streaming company... NFL just has to say "we like EBAO now, bye DAZN" and DAZN disappears overnight.
