Why is it coached abandon Tre so quickly?

I'm curious if it is the wrong coaches, or the wrong attitude?  Does he say something coming off the field that makes the coaches reach for the hook?  Because it sure seems that way.

He seems to have tools, and the coach was praising his speed. But he got pulled before the end of the second half.  For Frost, who hasn't been there more than a cup of coffee.

Was Tre given a super short leash because Frost is the guy they want?

Frost appeared better in his short time back in Hamilton. Take that for what it's worth. Ford is not a pocket QB although he is trying to pass before taking off running. His time as a potential QB is running out. If he was an import he'd have been released before now.

Maybe he needs to shift positions to a DB like his brother. Speed can make up for more mistakes than at QB.

I don't understand the demotion/benching of Ford, he had the game of his life a couple of weeks ago, so he's shown he can get it done and play very well, better than the Qb play we've seen of late for sure. Not sure if Milanovich wants certain plays executed and he's not getting it done or what, but I feel for the guy, he's been kicked around quite a bit and his strength is scrambling so design roll out plays where he buys time for his receivers to get seriously open vs traditional offensive plays.

Given where we're at right now with Brown and Elgersma, I'd take Ford in a heartbeat and he'd get things done for us here. The other 2 never will.

Sir Blue and Gold

Tre Ford can't play quarterback as a professional quarterback. He never has. He probably never will. Every coach he's had professionally has ultimately came to the same conclusion. He's an A+ athlete playing the wrong position.

A really good discussion and thanks for the thread.

Hard to know what is going on.  Was surprised at his exit.

Commentators said at 1st was to get a look from the sidelines but then that narrative died when he didn't come back in.

He appeared to be taking small but noticeable steps in his development, I personally would have kept him in.  Next game will be telling.

Don't agree with switching positions.

Suggesting the other 2 never will get it done isn't fair.  Brown is what he is an average QB.  Proven he can win, can't stay healthy.

Agree with most of your 1st paragraph

He can play pro QB just not very well (yet?), lacks consistency and his passing is weak.  Has shown flashes this year.  Yes has had a very long time to prove he can do it, but perhaps he is just a decent backup.  This year will likely determine a lot in terms of what's next.

I think you are being a little hard on him here.  Jury us out, I'm not sold but his stock went up and now back down to earth.

Google tells me he is an 11-14 QB which likely would have been swapped if he wasn't on a very bad Edm team to start.  But overall as it stands he is below 500 QB which shows he struggles but also shows he can win at the pro level sometimes.

I wouldn't think a position change for him is in the cards.  If he can't develop his passing, he could always find a way to contribute with his legs.  Like Strev, while not traditional QBs they can carve out a niche career with some success and contributions to the team and league.

I was thinking if we would be better off with Ford here, overall happy with our room but his mobility is at least exciting.  Always been a fan and want him to succeed.  Not sure that will ever come in the air.

The league would really benefit if he could put it together.

I don't agree often with people saying they only play because they are CDN.  Sometimes true for depth and teams guys and yes the ratio plays a role but more often than not players are on the AR due to their skills imo.  Hard to crack a CFL roster in any role.

Didn't watch enough to make an opinion of Frost but from what I seen did ok.  What's his story? Just came to the league?

Ford has always brought a polarizing discussion and its a good one to debate.

Sir Blue and Gold

He hasn't been a polarizing discussion to anyone but a few fans. All his coaches come to the same conclusion.

You can't run around like a lunatic and play quarterback professionally. You can't design an offense around that. You can't run systems through it.

It's not really a debate because there is a correct answer in this case. You may feel it's a discussion if you can't understand the difference.

Frost was with Hamilton 2024, 2025, was released Feb 2026, did the UFL thing, and finally became available recently (not sure how UFL contracts end).

Have to wonder if they were deciding on if they can afford to cut Tre, with the vet cut day rapidly approaching.  Don't think there is much trade value...

There have been many QB's that have switched positions in the past. It appears Ford's chances at QB have dwindled. He is a top athlete and changing his role might be advisable.

I see Ford as a young VAJ. (Nope, doesn't sound right) ... Vernon Adams Jr. Run before throwing. Trying too hard to become something he's not. Making too many bad decisions. Pouting when he gets pulled.

He could still end up being a decent starter, but it might take a few years.

being a professional football qb at high level is very very hard - Tre is not there and obviously the coaches who do this for a living have seen what be they see and come to the conclusion that he isn't going to get better cause getting better needs playing  time and he is a liability on the field for the reasons stated above.

pro teams are not based on backyard football - it happens on occasion but that can't be the norm.

Tre doesnt even have the same upside as Tommy Stevens

Tre has way more upside than Tommy Stevens who is at an elite level in the role he plays.

This topic is a good one and people have different viewpoints on him.  I believe its a polarizing topic as some have seen promise in him early on, some have had hope he would find his passing game and some wrote him off.

I wrote him off previously but was pleasantly surprised with his play in flashes this season.

I don't have much faith that he can find his passing game on a consistent basis but will see how he looks the rest of the way, assuming he gets some reps.

Looking forward to see more opinions on him here, already some diversity on the matter, which is expected and welcome.  It's not about who is right or wrong about Ford but rather a community discussion where all points of view can be aired.

Tre Ford is a great athlete who can make things happen when he gets the ball in his hands.

I can very easily see him being a possession NAT inside receiver and really help an offense out. Thing is, he'd have to take a pay cut and come in as a Corcoran or Cobb on an ELC and he's been paid relatively well so far in his career. He'll stay backup in Hamilton until they get a real starter, then Hamilton and Ford have to make a decision, but he does have the right passport, so there's that going for him.

This is the popular theory, that he's the next vaj who just needs 8 years before he is good.

I don't think it's true. Think back to when vaj looked more like Ford. Did vaj look THAT bad? Sometimes. But vaj would have games where he'd look like a real qb. Maybe one that scrambles as much as Rourke or Kelly, but would also stand in and make 60y completions.

Ford shows us the running of early vaj but none of the composure or ability to read d's. Remember how vaj used to be good vaj or bad vaj? Good vaj actually looked like a good qb. Good Ford has never looked as good as early good vaj.

Use him as a gadget qb, maybe, but the Ford as legit starter experiment is over.

Let's all remember, Scott is the qb whisperer, and he's deemed it hopeless, as have many hcs and OCs before him.

When does Ford stop getting "chances"?  Surely there has to be an end.  Surely he'll eventually be relegated to #2 status, and never got more than 1.5 weeks of step-in duty before a team airlifts a real guy.

I saw Scott will only put Ford back in if his other options suck worse.  That may indeed come to pass.  But I won't bet on it.  HAM would probably still be super thrilled to buy Zach (or maybe Dru) off us somehow.

Sinopoli got a lot less "chances" at QB and had a great career.

Does Tre have the hands for a receiver?  Can he return punts?  Is he as good a DB as his brother?  Is he a scatback?

VAJ looked like a starting QB in his first opportunity. He was never at a Ford level. Teams have always tried to upgrade on VAJ if given the opportunity, But from 2019 on, he's being average starter at worst.
My wife is amazing!

TBURGESS

I don't think VAJ came into his own til '23 in BC. Before that, he showed lots of flashes, but no consistency.

Ford shows flashes too, specifically with his legs. He has great arm strength with no accuracy. He hasn't learned to read defenses either, but he'll still get chances based on athletic ability alone.
Plan for the worst. Hope for the best.

theaardvark

The argument for development time goes way back to Cavillo...

Yes, players develop at different rates, and will have flash games where they match up against a defence they can beat, and then get beat down the next week.

Yes, Ford had a weak Edm team, hard to fly with the eagles when you team is flocking turkeys.

31 TD vs. 22 INT is not bad.

But he needs an OC that can scheme for him, and an HC that believes in him.  In Ham he's a backup at best, and the OC is adapting the scheme for him, limited packages I'd bet.  Frost fits the Mitchell playbook better, and if he hadn't gone to the UFL, Ford never gets a job in Hamilton.

Might he find his stride?  Not in Hamilton.  Is there a GM/HC/OC that will bet on him being the ratio breaker he can be?  Unless its desperation, I don't see it happening.

VAJ looked like a great young talent in his rookie year in 2016. He looked like a great up and comer in 2019 when he got his first starting opportunity. And he took it to another level in 2023. Comparing veterans in their peak to their developing selves doesn't mean they weren't of starting quality.

I don't know if Ford is still developing. Milanovich is doing exactly what he did to Bo though. You play the way I call it or you sit down. It's not punishment or giving up on the player, it's meeting the expectations or you don't play. We'll see if Ford can rise up the way Bo did.

RebusRankin

Adams had established himself as a starter by year 4. Ford is in year 5 and despite multiple chances still hasn't shown he can play QB. Heck Adams showed more in college too at a much higher level.

Ford is a high level athlete who can't throw the ball or read a defense well enough to be a starting QB.

TBURGESS

Ford is definitely behind any QB who played US college football. He didn't get 3 or 4 years to hone his skills with the best coaching and the best training in the world. He made the CFL based on pure athleticism.

If I'm Hamilton, I play Ford against us unless BLM is back. He'd run all over us.
