Budding linebacker Braxton Hill back for Hamilton Tiger-Cats against Stampeders

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will have a three-headed monster in their linebacking corps for Saturday's clash with the Stampeders.

Promising American youngster Braxton Hill is slated to make his return to the starting lineup at weak-side linebacker after missing the past two games with an ankle injury. In four appearances this season, the 26-year-old has collected 24 defensive tackles and two more on special teams. That ties him with Canadian starter Ryan Baker, who has appeared in all seven games, for the third-highest defensive total on the team.

A collegiate standout at the University of Montana, Hill began last season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before joining Hamilton late in the campaign. In eight regular-season games with the Tiger-Cats in 2025, he recorded 16 defensive tackles, 14 special teams tackles, and two interceptions. That earned him interest from multiple NFL teams this offseason.

Hill, Baker, and veteran all-star Wynton McManis will form a fearsome trio now that all are healthy, with packages designed to get all of them on the field. Canadian rookie Loik Gagne (knee) will not be available as depth in the linebacking corps after being placed on the one-game injured list.

Canadian defensive tackle Charbel Dabire (undisclosed) will also sit out this week on the one-game, while American defensive end Mitchell Agude has been moved to the reserve roster. American rookie De'Jon Benton will sub in as a depth defensive tackle, while 2026 first-round pick Jonathan Denis suits up as a seventh offensive lineman to maintain the ratio. Canadian defensive back Jake Nitychoruk also draws back into the lineup, while American defensive back Kaleb Hayes has been bumped down to the practice roster.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-4) will host the Calgary Stampeders (3-4) at Hamilton Stadium on Saturday, August 1, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders blew out the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this past week, while the Tiger-Cats fell 31-18 to the Montreal Alouettes.

The weather forecast in Hamilton calls for a high of 27 degrees and a 40 percent chance of rain. The game will be broadcast on TSN and CTV in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on 770 CHQR in Calgary or the Ticats Audio Network in Hamilton.

Ben Labrosse keeps starting job despite all-star Adrian Greene's return for Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders will get a reigning all-star back in the lineup on Saturday afternoon when they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but they don't intend to use him with the starting unit.

Adrian Greene is slated to make his return after missing last week's victory with an eye injury, but is listed as the backup at his usual field cornerback spot. The 27-year-old native of Toronto was named All-West Division with the Stampeders last season after making 39 defensive tackles, six interceptions, and two touchdowns over 13 regular-season games. In four games this year, he has registered 14 defensive tackles.

Former fourth-overall CFL Draft pick Ben Labrosse will start in place of Greene for a second week in a row, after he recorded three interceptions in a victory over Winnipeg last week. The native of Montreal had never previously recorded an interception in his career and was passed over for the starting job in favour of undrafted free agent Dolani Robinson, who has since been released, during an earlier injury to Greene this season.

Labrosse's performance against the Bombers could be an indication of the step forward that the team hoped to see from the injury-plagued youngster in the final year of his rookie contract. As such, they intend to give him some run, at least on paper. However, it should be noted that Labrosse was listed as the starter at the start of the 2025 season, and Greene took over almost immediately.

2026 first-round pick Eric Rascoe's battles with injury continue in his rookie year, as he has been placed on the six-game injured list with a bum shoulder. Terrence Ganyi will step in as Canadian depth in the linebacking corps. Canadian defensive back Jackson Sombach has been demoted to the practice roster to make room for Greene.

Just before halftime I think that fumble was a forward pass.  That's why it went so far uh, forward!  His hand was moving forward, and ya he threw it like a seal or t.rex, but throw it he did.  Now, you could say it's IG, but that still keeps HAM the ball.

The problem with the last 2-3 season paradigm of "let it play out and let command sort it out" is all fine and good.  HOWEVER, you then cannot assign extra weight to the "call on the field"!  They can't say "they let it play out because we told them to let everything play out so the call on the field is a fumble because we forbade them from whistling it dead as a forward pass".  They need to say "since we forced it to play out, we'll take a neutral stance and make the call purely based on video".

I find it aggravating.

I really like HAM bringing in Frost mid-game.  As soon as it was clear they were going to lose with Ford, they pulled the plug.  And they didn't put in proven-can't-play Dolegala either.

This is why I thought as soon as Dru went down, or certainly after 1 garbage series by Elgs, we should have put in Perkins vs BC.  Not because I thought Perkins was going to light it up -- but I was certain Elgs wasn't going to win anything.  And it's always smart to get a look at your next guy because you never can tell (see: BC's new kid).

Wow.  This game is positive proof that you cannot blow your challenge early in a CFL game.  Not only do refs ream you all the rest of the game, but the other team knows that they will get away with more iffy stuff.

After HAM wastes their challenge on an utterly hopeless gamble, they then can't challenge the later clear DPI, weak DPI, and clear OPI.  They just have to sit there and take it.

Every single fan who watches every CFL game for a few years knew that Scott's challenge was never in a zillion years going to be overturned.  Why can coaches be so dumb?

I really liked what Frost did.  He gave them a shot, gave the whole team hope, and brought energy to the whole team.  He was doing pretty good until they got so down the DL got into max pass-rush.  I don't fault him after that.

I don't see how you don't start Frost next week.

This might be the final end of Ford.  He's a gadget guy, nothing more.

A couple of times in this game Lapo is talking about the DB all cheating up close because they know there's zero threat of go routes.  Listen at 4Q1:33.  This is EXACTLY what BC was doing to us in the last game when we neutered Dru by saying "no deep ball".  As soon as you do that you put your RECs in an impossible situation.  It's just plain stupid.  Both Dru & Frost have arms to shoot it 55Y no problem -- even if you know you won't connect, you MUST throw a deep shot early to tell the D "hey, you have to cover deep".

Here's an interesting thought: HAM, with no QB, got more points on CGY than we did with a supposed legit "starter"!  Ouch.

I always knew McInnes was Commander Data -- an Android -- but I can confirm it for the whole world in this game!

At 4Q0:56 when he announces the DQ his voice synthesizer cuts out when he says the words "rough play disqualification", but his lip motors keep moving!!  Then the voice synth reboots and cuts back in for the rest of it.

He is not touching his mic button the whole time!  It's not a mic issue.  And it's not a censorship/bleep-out because I'm watching the live broadcast (not the late-night replays)!

Ok, ok, just kidding ... or am I?        Just make sure they don't hire Lore.

On the DQ the HAM guy does WAY more "violence" than the DQ'd player.  But he push-hit, instead of punch/slap.  So crazy hard push-hits are A-OK, only 15Y, but even a "wussy slap" will get you 25 & DQ'd.

I'd be coaching my players to push-hit if they insist on doing extracurriculars.  Or even let the players strategize & plan out push-hits to entice opponents to punch/slap.  Just push-hit until the other guy loses his temper.  There a lot of hot-heads in the league, so it shouldn't be hard.

Just make sure no one Bomber does this more than once a game, or they get a 2-misconduct ejection themselves.

Oh ya, the icing on the cake is you also get a free 10Y out of it!

Wow, horrible crowd in HAM.  Not good for a once-proud great CFL town.  Genuinely makes me sad.  Good memories of my trip to Tim Horton's Field, and good people there (never met the infamous rowdies).
