The good, the bad, and the ugly.

What an absolute ****-show of a game. All of the weaknesses were highlighted in that one and they were way too much to overcome.

The Good:

- Brady 100 yard game. Showed he can still do it if he gets the ball.
- Major Williams continues to be a find at DB
- Naur Gatkuoth made a crazy good 2 plays in a row to get us the ball back on one drive (would have been huge if      we had taken advantage and made a comeback).
- The DL continues to show push and came away with 4 sacks - so props to Willie and Ceresna.

The Bad:

- Offensive play calling. I think Brady lines up as the wide-side receiver more than get gets carries. It takes a player off for us and gives the D an extra defender imo
- Constantly throwing into coverage result in 4 INTs instead of the 4 almost INTs last week - QB being too aggresive or Condell not scheming guys open?
- Brady's 45 yard TD run was his last carry of the game. And his wide side routes take him out of the passing game.

The Ugly:

- Lots, but the injury to Broxton and missed tackles really stick out to me.

MJ38 was very good on teams for his first game. 3 STs on the night.

D-Line got pressure at times, recorded 3 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Bad
Trey Vaval was running east-west more than any other game this season. The two times he ran north-south resulted in good yardage.

19 offensive possessions for the Blue Bombers and 30 points. In recent years, the CFL average has been 13½  possessions per game. Scoring two points per drive will win you more games than you lose. While 30 points for may seem high, it is well below the magic two points per drive. For contrast, last year Winnipeg & Hamilton played a game which had 16 combined possessions in the entire game (CFL record low).

Perkins is looking shaky on short yardage. He fumbled a snap for the second time this season (not recorded as a fumble for some reason).

Calgary started in Winnipeg territory 5 times which led to 20 points. Winnipeg started in Calgary territory 4 times, accounting for 10 points.

Ugly
2-yard (deflected) punt combined with the 15-yard No Yards – Interference penalty. Despite that poor punt, Sheahan still out kicked Vassett.

With 1:47 remaining in the game, the stats froze with the play description "Shotgun fumbled snap at, Touchback". The last 10 plays of the game were not entered until after the game was over. The actual play entered after the fact was "(01:47) Shotgun #4 D.Brown pass complete short left to #10 N.Demski caught at WPG40, for 6 yards to the WPG40 (#44 A.Johnson)"

Comment about Oliveira's last run:
Media typically leave the press box area before the end of the game and head downstairs for their postgame sound bites. They probably missed the final 3 plays for the Blue Bombers which were all runs by Oliveira. With the incomplete stats, it appeared as though his last run was the 45-yard TD run. Fans in stadium didn't notice because most had left the building.

On TSN SportsCentre after the game, they posted a final score of 42-30, probably because of the stats glitch.


Note: Dante Daniels was on the field each time the jumbo offence was on the field in the 4th quarter including the final 3 plays of the game.

He's still only done a ToD on 1 SY play.  So he's still good in my books.  Many QBs fumble on SY snaps.  It's important that he showed he's able to recover.

But yes, the fact it's not as smooth as it should be does raise an eyebrow.  Perhaps he's getting the jitters.  The whiffs can ruin confidence, and then you second guess everything you are doing, and that's when you screw up.

Someone needs to just tell him to calm down, he's fine.  Just do your job as you trained.

MJ38 was very good on teams for his first game. 3 STs on the night.

Looks like they made him gunner, so it's a bit easier to get stats that way.  However, he severely screwed up on the very first punt.  As right gunner he went way too narrow and left a wide open escape route for the returner, who got a massive return to mid-field.

As I rewatch I'll look to see if the coaches corrected that (slap upside the head!) for the later punts.

Very strange a noob gets gunner duty!!  Not sure I've ever seen that before!

2Q9:29 Dru has a 3-man rush, protection is good, but chooses the quicker slot curl than the slightly longer-developing wide open wide out on the same side.  When he has the time he needs to wait 1 more second to see if there's a better option.  Pass was complete but not enough for 1st.

3Q10:31 Dru has as much pocket sense and escape-ability as Zach.  Simply awful: wide open escape routes and he picks the only one with a 280lb guy running straight at him.

3Q1:20 Dru sees the same D alignment that got a big Brady run before, and changes the play at the line, Brady rips off his huge career-best run for TD.  Hand it to Eli, he got downfield in a hurry to make the key LB block: showing his speed and accuracy.  Strevy on the sideline with Brady after that?  Huh?

4Q11:36 All of these INTs and batdowns against our O are due to the fact there is no over-the- top threat. With Dru the whole league knows the RECs are going to come back or sit on every single pass.  There is no in-stride pass and definitely no deep go route.  Why we don't take advantage of that cheat-up by CGY with a double-move on a stop & go is beyond me.  And if you refuse to throw deep (maybe because the OL sucks) then every single REC needs to sprint back to the ball, not sit on it.

4Q6:22 Finally an illegal participation flag!  Most refs seem to not care or notice these, but this one did. The key here was it looks like the CGY guy stepped out all on his own (though with slight contact with a WPG guy?), meaning he had no option to re-join the play.

Jackson out of position as gunner in 1st punt cost us big time.

Dru will sometimes take more steps back before a pass, especially a longer-dev one.  Zach tends to have his couple of steps back, then make reads M.O.

Castillo's bad miss the laces are 90 degrees to him, on his next FG the laces are precisely on the opposite side of the ball (visible in the gaps).  So blame Sheahan?

Dru favors the center pass game.  Not only does he target most passes there, but he rarely even looks at any wide out options!  Guys could be 100% open wide out and he doesn't even look.

The holding to stop Willie in this game was over the top, completely outrageous.  And the refs don't start calling them until mid-4th!

Moxey had the same moment Chris Randle did near the end of his tenure: getting beat and wildly flailing at nothing to make up for it.  He was gone shortly thereafter, and Moxey may get the same treatment.

There were some busted coverages and slopping tackling that I think boils down to playing a third string safety.

12 points net off of two special teams plays.

And Brown forcing throws when there is nothing.

Tyreik McAllister scored TDs 3 different ways in the game. His feat prompted a review of the CFL records and Winnipeg Blue Bombers HB/DHB Tom Casey has been added to the list.

CFL records often include pre-CFL records from the WIFU / IRFU. This is one item that did not include records from that era, until now.

Touchdowns 3 Ways: Calgary's Tyreik McAllister scored a TD last week via a rush, pass and FG miss return - the first to ever accomplish that specific combination. He became the 4th player to ever score a TD in any combination of 3 types in a single game.
