October 30, 2026: HERD TAKES FOURTH IN A ROW

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 1
MANITOBA BISONS 4

➤ Summary: Game Centre ∞  Game Report ∞ Tabbed Boxscore
➤ TWU: Spartans Fall to Bisons in Winnipeg (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Bisons continue strong start with 4-1 win over Spartans  (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
TWU: Z. Whittaker  (03:19 1st)
Man: G. Lane  (10:34 1st) , E. Pastro  (16:09 1st) , L. Brennan  (07:06 2nd) , D. Pasternak  (11:38 2nd)
Goal: TWU: Audet (41 shots, 37 saves), Man: Holt (37 shots, 36 saves)

Holy Trinity scored first, on their second shot of the game, then it was all-Bisons. The game got a little chippy after a while, and ultimately it was the powerplay that made the difference (the Bisons were 3-for-7, the Spartans were 0-for-2).

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (30 Kieper)

Defence:
4 Bonni - 6 Coyle
8 Toth - 3 Borschowa
27 Turner - 28 Longo

Forwards:
21 Pasternak - 11 Purdom - 17 Bruce
23 Lane - 20 Zaplitny - 24 Brennan
22 Willick - 13 Pastro - 19 Funk
16 Lodoen - 29 Wheddon

Scratches:
F: 9 Alarie - 15 McAllister - 18 Chastko
G: 34 Perreault

TRINITY WESTERN
Goal:
35 Audet (90 Bacovsky)

Defence:
28 Landmanis - 2 Joslin
20 Camaazzola - 94 Whittaker
8 May - 15 Leitch

Forwards:
24 Korzhyletskyi - 19 Simchuk - 17 Hrabovetskyi
91 Lowe - 27 Farren - 43 Schmidt
9 Hungle - 7 Lamoureux - 16 Edwards
93 Knutson - 10 Shearon - 11 Bessey

Scratches:
G: 1 Capton - 31 Savage
D: 4 Abbott - 5 Easton - 6 Wruck
D: 12 Foster - 25 Serrao
F: 14 Moledina - 18 Sinclair - 21 Davis
F: 22 Metastasio - 26 Ayotte - 44 Paulsen - 77 Desabrais

The first major note on the lineups is that the Bisons were one man short. Eric Alarie joined fellow forwards Teague McAllister and Nolan Chastko in the press box. Justin Perreault, as the 3rd string goaltender, is always up there as well. There were also five players there, so somebody new could be coming in. So the Bisons had 10 forwards and seven defencemen dressed, and once again used Tanner Willick up front instead of on defence.

Shortage of bodies is not an issue with Holy Trinity. They have a 34-man roster!

The 2nd period is what did it for the Bisons. They outscored the Spartans 2-0 (both on the powerplay), outshot them 15-6, and all four penalties were assessed upon TWU.

The shot clock (in my opinion) was overstated in the 3rd period (officially, 20-13 in favour of Trinity). The Bisons seemed to just want to run down the clock, hold onto their commanding lead, and get ready for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Bisons responded to some chippiness but otherwise seemed satisfied to mail it in.

(Lucas Brennan scored for the Bisons.)

(Trinity uploaded a picture of Raphael Audet's save on Tanner Willick.)

I was wondering why a game that started at 8:00 CDT (same as MacEwan v Calgary) was so far behind. Well, the Evil Monkeys had no jerseys! Here's a clip from the Bluegars' report:
QuoteIn a night that saw a 43-minute delay, one team forgetting their jerseys at home and 16 combined minor penalties, a hockey game somehow broke out and the Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey team downed the University of Alberta Golden Bears by a score of 5-3 on Friday evening.

Before the game had even started the Golden Bears were forced to scramble for some yellow practice jerseys in a closet deep in Flames Community Arenas. They dawned bright yellow sweaters that read "Western Elite Hockey" across the central emblem. Good enough for a game against the navy-wearing Mount Royal Cougars.
I got home from the Bison game when the Monkeys were leading 3-2. I wondered what this new jersey was all about. They also had generic white socks! Their usual away jersey this year was white with their monkey logo. However, they have had yellow 3rd jerseys in the past. I'd like to get a good picture of tonight's jersey. I spent a long time trying to find out what this was all about.

The Bluegars are now 1st in the Alberta Division, despite not looking particularly impressive thus far. This was a streaky game. The Bluegars built a 2-0 lead in the 1st period, the Monkeys took a 3-2 lead early in the 2nd period, then three unanswered MRU goals ended it. Powerplays were key here. MRU was 3-for-6, Alberta was 2-for-7. There was an empty-netter, thus leaving each side with one even-strength goal.

I am betting that the Monkeys will have official jerseys when the scene shifts to Edmontown on Saturday.

Goal: MacU: Ironside (28 shots, 27 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (20 shots, 18 saves)

On a night where jerseys are a story, Go Dinos uploaded a picture which displays a new away jersey for The Family Guys. They just got a new logo last year, and it appears that this one is stylized for the hockey team. Their white jersey used to be a circle with their logo shrunken to fit. (I don't care for that look.) I wonder if their home jersey will follow suit. I hope so, this is sharp.

In this one, Bedrock U held to three shots in the 2nd period, and Mac U was held to two shots in the 3rd period. This is a big win for The Family Guys, as it vaults them into 2nd place in the Alberta Division. I have a sense now that the four teams in Alberta will fight tooth-and-nail all season.

UBC: Z. Nicholson  (18:29 1st) , T. Thorpe  (08:01 2nd) , J. Williams  (18:20 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Maier (34 shots, 31 saves), UBC: Schwebius (27 shots, 22 saves)

This was part of a unique triple-header, since Sask and UBC played simultaneously in hockey, football, and volleyball. The football game was for first place in the CW, and UBC won. Here, however, they were not really in this game from the start. The Banjo-Mutts outshot the T-irds 16-5 in the 1st period, en route to a 3-1 lead. It was then 5-2 after the 2nd period and the Mutts were playing run-out-the-clock in the 3rd. It took UBC over 18 minutes to make it 5-3, then an empty-netter wrapped it up.

This makes Sask 6-1-0 and keeps them two points ahead of the Bisons. UBC is now 3-2-0 and now needs a win on Saturday to stay in contention for 1st place.

The Bisons make it five in a row, and that has not happened for a long time. Combined with the results from elsewhere, the odds of them not only qualifying for playoffs, but hosting a playoff series, have increased greatly.

Line-up-wise, things were mostly the same as on Friday.

For the Bisons, Matthew Kieper rotated into the net, as is usual. Eric Alarie returned to the line-up, hence they had a full 20 dressed. This prompted a rotation on the left wing. Alarie was with Pastro and Funk, Willick with Lodoen and Wheddon, Pasternak with Zaplitny and Wheddon, and Lane with Purdom and Bruce. However, Joel Purdom did not play after a few early shifts. At least not that I noticed. Bruce and Lane continued to play together with assorted linemates, and they killed penalties and were on the powerplay. Thus, the Herd was back to a 19-man line-up for the bulk of the game.

For the Spartans, Landmanis was scratched from the blueline, and they dressed an extra forward, #21 Cyprus Davis. Their alignment was altered somewhat in that Christian Lowe replaced Artem Hrabovetskyi on the Ukrainian line.

Once again, Holy Trinity opened the scoring but the Bison powerplay turned things around. Dawson Pasternak's scored his 4th and 5th goals of the season about two minutes apart.

The 2nd period was fairly uneventful, with no goals and much sloppy play by the Bisons. This culminated with a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty late in the period.

In the 3rd period, Skyler Bruce scored his 6th of the season for what proved to be the winner. The Bisons nursed the 2-goal lead until Trinity registered a powerplay goal with 31 seconds left. There was a brouhaha after the final whistle. Holy Trinity is generally a fairly chippy team, and this game was not really different.

For reasons which really call for an explanation, the Bisons lose a home game against Regina next weekend. They want to have men's and women's teams in Virden on Saturday. The women were already scheduled to play in Regina. The men could have played at home Friday, then ventured out to Virden on Saturday. I'll address this later in the week. For those unaware, Virden is straight west of Winnipeg just inside the Manitoba/ Saskatchewan border.

This sweep, albeit a 4-1 on points sweep, places the T-irds in a difficult situation. They are now level with Regina at 3-2-1. That said, this was a good battle and could have gone either way. The Banjo-Mutts thus remain two points ahead of the Bisons in the race for first place.

MacEwan posted a story on Friday's game too late for me, and it is now linked.

During the CWTV broadcast, they pointed out that this was the Dinos' first loss at MacEwan since they entered the CW. This win came at a good time for The Family Guys. They entered the weekend level with the Dinos, now they lead them by a full four points. Could we see the Dinos and Evil Monkeys battling for a playoff berth? That would be something. They face each other next weekend.

I saw a good portion of this game. The first thing I noticed was that the Evil Monkeys had full uniforms! Their late post of a Friday game story is accompanied by a photo, which I have linked for posterity.

This was a very evenly-played game and, to coin a cliche, could have gone either way. The Alberta Division thus had a pair of sweeps which really shifts this division. The Evil Monkeys face the Dinos next week, and neither could survive another sweep.

On the positive side, we have the Bisons' record through the early going. The CW passed the quarter-pole this past weekend. The Bisons are sitting pretty, two points behind Saskatchewan and second overall in the CW. All is glorious!

The Bisons have been led in the scoring department by Skyler Bruce (8 GP, 6 G, 6 A, 12 Pts), Dawson Pasternak (8 GP, 5 G, 5 A, 10 Pts), and Lucas Brennan (8 GP, 2 G, 6 A, 8 Pts). In the CW scoring race, Bruce is 1st, Pasternak is tied for 2nd, and Brennan is tied for 8th. Both goaltenders are having stellar seasons. Braden Holt is 2nd (3-1-0, 2.25 GAA, .935 S%) and Matthew Kieper is 4th (3-1-0, 2.00 GAA, .934 S%).

The Banjo-Cats are not to be under-estimated. A sweep here and they would vault into contention themselves. In my opinion, they are the biggest surprise so far. They lost most of their scoring from a year ago. Now, their wins have been against the bottom-dwellers. They opened with two wins over Holy Trinity and followed with a split against the Disappointing Dinos from Calgary. So maybe they are just cashing in where they can scavenge some points. Time will tell. They could be like last year's Bisons by finishing in the top 6 overall but finishing 4th in their division and missing the playoffs.

Kittens to watch include Cole Wirun (6 GP, 4 G, 4 A, 8 Pts) and Jye Zawatsky (6 GP, 3 G, 5 A, 8 Pts). Wirun had two goals and two assists in 10 games last season, and Zawatsky is a rookie. Maintaining that pace may be difficult. In net, they have split the duties between Damon Cunningham (2-0-1, 2.40 GAA, .933 S%) and former Bison Ross Hawryluk (1-2-0, 4.29 GAA, .880 S%). They might want to lean toward Cunningham.

On the negative side, we have two things. One is the injury big which has hit the sparse Bison roster. The other is the scheduling of this weekend, whereby the U of M sacrificed the hockey team for the benefit of the women's team and one of their Alumni.

On the injury bug, the Bisons were down a man last Friday, then again finished down a man on Saturday. They have just 23 rostered players right now, with three of those being goaltenders. As a result, when three skaters are scratched, they are one man short. Their roster has just seven defencemen, and 13 forwards. All the injuries have been to forwards, which is fortunate. It is always easier to shift a defenceman up front than vice versa.

On the scheduling, university administration owe an explanation. I could find nothing, and AI has found nothing. You will note that this series has one game in Regina, and one in Virden. It is a 2:58 drive from Winnipeg to Virden, and 2:57 from Regina to Virden.

The Bison men's team has ZERO home games in the month of November. That's because they were slated to be the home team this weekend, followed by two away series and a bye week.

Trechelle Bunn, former Bison women's player and current Chief of the Birdtail Sioux First Nation (which is a half hour north of Virden) got the U of M to agree to this event. In the CW, the women's and men's schedules are exact inverses of one another. Thus, when it is Regina at Manitoba in men's, it is Manitoba at Regina in women's (as this weekend was originally scheduled). The idea here was to have a women's and a men's game played in double-header fashion. CW scheduling does not provide for this. Then, to get Regina to agree to shift their women's team home game to a neutral site, they demanded that their men's team shift two away games to one home game and one neutral site game.

Now, the options to this are obvious. The Bison men could have played at home on Friday, then both teams bus out to Virden for Saturday's game. The women's team have one home series with Regina, on January 15th and 16th. Again, that Saturday game could have been moved to Virden. There would have been no cost to Regina, since Virden is at the midpoint on the highway home. Also, pre-season games are frequently played at or near Saskatchewan First Nations. There's no reason why the Birdtail Sioux could not have followed suit.

I thought perhaps there could be a financial benefit to this. However, the Birdtail Sioux Facebook page has an ad, which AI confirms means that band members can sign up for a free game ticket, a free bus ride, and a free meal. There was nothing at all about the games in the October 30th issue of their weekly paper, the Virden Empire-Advance. The local radio station, CJ103radio.com, does not do play-by-play and don't have any articles on their web page. Moreover, the current band is involved in litigation with a former employee who was fired over alleged misappropriation of $65,000. That matter goes to trial in 2028. Thus, I would not anticipate a great number of ticket sales to the locals in Virden, nor a financial contribution from the Birdtail Sioux.

Bottom line: I'd like to know what is in this for the Bisons? Looks like nothing but costs, and instead of 14 home and 14 away games, they get 12 home, 1 neutral site, and 15 away games.

Every game on Friday night starts at 8:00 CDT, so my chances of taking in large swaths of the out-of-town games are very low.

On paper, this is the mismatch of the week. After a pair of 2-goal losses to Regina, Holy Trinity has three consecutive weekends where they have had a 1-goal loss and a 3-goal loss each weekend. One of these weekends, they are bound to win one of those 1-goal games.

At the same time, the Banjo-Mutts have a 1-goal win each weekend so far, except against Manitoba (where they had a 1-goal loss instead). Put this together and I expect that Sask will have one comfortable win and one close game. No doubt the Bisons would love to see the Banjo-Mutts drop a point or two this weekend.

This is a home-and-home Alberta derby series, Friday in Calgary and Saturday in Edmontown (actually, nearby Nisku).

This Battle-of-Alberta is usually a much-anticipated confrontation between two national contenders. This year, they could be fighting it out for 3rd place in the Alberta Division and the final playoff berth.

I had thought that the Evil Monkeys would be in a battle with MacEwan for 3rd place in the Alberta Division. After a remarkable pre-season, where they went 5-1-0 against a solid slate of CW opposition, and 4-0-0 against ACAC opposition, things were looking up for Alberta. Usually, a team's pre-season record is reflective of at least their early regular season record. That remains true for the other 34 teams in U-Sports, but not the Monkeys. They opened with a sweep of MacEwan, but are now on a 4-game losing streak. Those losses were to the Bisons and MRU, so it may be the case that those two and Sask are simply above the rest of the teams. In any event, I don't see Alberta holding on to a #5 national ranking.

The bigger question is: What is up with the Disappointing Dinos? They have 22 returning veterans, which usually infers a high degree of consistency. I guess they have been consistent, just a notch below contender-level play. Last weekend's sweep at the hands of MacEwan has their backs to the wall.

What should we expect here? Well, Alberta swept MacEwan, and MacEwan swept Calgary. However, Calgary had a 3-point weekend against MRU, and MRU swept Alberta. Whichever side loses on Friday night will be under immense pressure on Saturday.

These teams have had no common opponents in the regular season. MRU has played each of their three Alberta Division opponents, and UBC has stuck to a non-Alberta menu. However, UBC swept a pre-season series between these teams.

Last year, UBC was in first place with a 23-2-3 record. Thus, one more loss and they will assure themselves of a reduced record this year. Also, last year MRU was second (and first in their division) with a 20-6-2 record. They could easily repeat that record.

The Bluegars may well be the only Alberta to meet or exceed expectations this season. They are currently looking at running away with the Alberta Division, while UBC is tied with Regina for 3rd place in Division B.

MacEwan has the bye this week but they still have three links - two from their site and one from CW Prezly. Sam Simard was CW Player of the Week, and 1st star at MacEwan. This is the second week in a row where these honours went to a player on a team with a bye week.

November 6, 2026: BISONS FALL APART IN 3RD PERIOD

MANITOBA BISONS 1
REGINA COUGARS 6

➤ UofR: Whyte strikes twice as Cougars storm past Bisons (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Man: E. Alarie  (00:40 2nd)
Reg: R. Fequet  (04:18 1st) , C. Whyte  (00:40 3rd) , E. Hoiness  (05:44 3rd) , L. Holoien  (07:14 3rd) , L. Gulutzan  (12:52 3rd) , C. Whyte  (13:44 3rd)
Goal: Man: Holt (28 shots, 22 saves), Reg: Cunningham (26 shots, 25 saves)

What a disaster!

Actually, this one was tied after two periods and the Bisons started the 3rd period on the powerplay. They had controlled most of the territory and possession, the powerplay has been good this year, so there was optimism. However, Braden Holt whiffed on a Banjo-Cat dump-in from the left side of the blueline, and this opened the floodgates. From then on, nothing went right for the Herd. Regina had 5 goals on 11 shots in the 3rd period.

Quick Summary
TWU: none
Sask: J. Dureau  (09:48 1st) , K. Sorensen  (10:35 1st)
Goal: TWU: Audet (55 shots, 53 saves), Sask: Maier (23 shots, 23 saves)

This looked like it was going to be a beat-down. The Banjo-Mutts outshot Holy Trinity 25-4 in the 1st period, en route to a 2-0 lead. Those pesky Spartans never gave up, and it was a tight battle the rest of the way. Trinity deserves a win already. They are definitely better than their record.

Quick Summary
UBC: J. Williams  (16:36 1st) ,  J. Wright  (18:11 2nd) , T. Thorpe  (01:13 3rd)
MRU: D. Seitz  (10:07 2nd) , T. Gibson  (08:04 3rd) , T. Gibson  (09:07 3rd) , R. Jamaldinov  (16:52 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Gee (23 shots, 19 saves), MRU: Zahara (18 shots, 15 saves)

The T-irds scored a minute into the 3rd period to open up a 3-1 lead. Then blew it. If the playoffs started today, UBC would be watching on CWTV. I guess the Bluegars would, as well, since they would have a quarter-final bye and would want to see who they would be playing in the semi-finals.

Calg: P. Bocharov  (03:05 2nd) , C. Horning  (06:36 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Langkow (27 shots, 25 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (22 shots, 19 saves)

The Dinos outshot the Evil Monkeys 10-2 in the 1st period and that stat was indicative of the play. However, it was 0-0. The rest of the game was even, and the Monkeys cashed in. As a result, if the playoffs started today, the Dinos would join UBC watching on CWTV. The Monkeys would be coming to Friendly Manitoba to face the Bisons.
