October 6, 2026: CALGARY'S ROSTER

In the Town of Bedrock, they have finally uploaded a full 2026-27 roster to complete the set in the CW. The recruitment report from July 14, 2026 is here. Additions to that list have been one goaltender and two defencemen, plus three U-Sports transfers.

The other roster pages are here:
Regina - July 20th
MacEwan - August 20th
Trinity Western - September 1st
Mount Royal - September 10th
UBC - September 10th
Manitoba - September 30th
Alberta - September 30th
Saskatchewan - September 30th

Goaltenders:
Returning:
35  Carl Tetachuk  G (9-4-0, 2.29 GAA, .913 S%)
37  Jari Kykkanen  G (0-0-0, 3.00 GAA, .909 S%)

Arrivals:
31  Kelton Pyne - G - Vancouver (WHL)

Departures:
37 Carl Stankowski G (10-4-1, 2.30 GAA, .910 S%)

The Dinos have been anchored by the Two Carls in net for the past four seasons.  Stankowski is gone now, but Tetachuk could easily be a good #1, and Pyne has good major junior credentials.

Defencemen:
Returning:
41  Remy Aquilon  D (2-5-14-19 with MRU)
22  Connor Horning  D (22-6-7-13)
21  Dylan Anderson  D (19-0-8-8)
7  Kurtis Smythe  D (26-0-7-7 in 2024-25 with MRU)
15  Logen Hammett  D (27-2-4-6)
17  Wyatt Wilson  D (26-0-5-5)
9  Pavel Bocharov  D (13-1-3-4)
2  Tre Fouquette  D (19-2-1-3)
26  Kaiden Bugera  D (9-2-1-3)

Arrivals:
5 Vincent Palmarin - D - Warman (SJHL)
12 Russ Demo - D - Kindersley (SJHL)

Departures:
4 Sean Strange D (28-4-19-23)
44 Brody Maguire D (11-0-0-0)
- Ranon Joseph D (0-0-0-0)

Does any team in the country have seven returning defencemen, plus two veterans transfering from another U-Sports team? They lost Strange, by far their highest scoring blueliner, but they have a lot of volume.

Forwards:
Returning:
23  Hayden Pakkala  F  (28-15-11-26)
29  Jake Poole  F (26-11-13-24)
25  Gavin Schmidt  F (28-8-13-21)
24  Stephen Kirkpatrick  F (28-7-13-20)
39  Brendan Lee  F (28-8-8-16)
11  Carter Massier  F (23-5-7-12)
44  Fischer O'Brien F (24-4-4-8 with RMC)
16  Logan Hauer  F (19-4-3-7)
20  Matt Corbet  F (25-1-6-7)
27  Davis Fry  F (24-3-3-6)
28  Riley Gannon  F (2-1-0-1)

Arrivals:
6  Ryan Arnold - F - Fort McMurray (AJHL)
14  Trae Johnson - F - Swift Current (WHL)
19  Sam Oremba - F - Spokane (WHL)
43  Anthony Wilson - F - Swift Current (WHL)

Departures:
38 Adam Kydd F (28-8-33-41)
42 Mack Stewart F (28-9-10-19)
18 Andrej Kovacevic F (8-2-2-4)
14 Jacksenn Hungle F (10-1-3-4)
- Kailus Green F (0-0-0-0)

Ten returnees plus a transfer are nice to have, but they did lose Kydd (their leading scorer) and Stewart (their 4th leading scorer). Three newcomers have WHL experience, but none have gaudy numbers like Kydd or Stewart.

This was an odd game.

First, London Hoilett and Skyler Bruce were scratched. Third goaltender Justin Perreault was listed but did not play. Matthew Kieper played the first 30 in net, then Braden Holt played the last 30.

The game was scoreless after the 1st period, even though the shots were 18-4 in favour of the hosts.

Then the Mavericks went nuts in the 2nd. An early goal gave them a 1-0 lead, but then they took a penalty right away. Instead of the Bisons levelling the score, a shorthanded goal made it 2-0. Mid-period, the Mavericks took another penalty. Again, a shorthanded goal, and it was 3-0. The Bisons continued to press on the PP and at least broke even when Brandon Funk made it 3-1. The Herd's goaltending wasn't what it was in past games, as three more goals were pumped in a minute-or-two apart. Six goals on 11 shots in the period.

The 3rd period was largely academic. However, the shots were 10-10 and the Mavericks had three more goals. Caden Zaplitny score for the Bisons in the midst of those goals.

On the night, Kieper stopped a respectable 22 of 25 shots. Holt stopped 7 of 13 shots. I haven't seen any replays, but yikes! Even if they were all breakaways, that's not a flattering statistic. Unlike Sunday at UND, where he stopped 26 of 29 shots.

The Bisons thus end the pre-season at 4-4-0, having gone 3-1-0 against Regina and 1-3-0 against NCAA teams. Now they have one day off before playing a pair of games at UBC. There are NHL teams with a lesser schedule than this.

The regular season is finally ready to launch. Keep in mind that this is the 3rd and final season of the CW's failed experiment with two rotating divisions. The past two years, they had an East (always including the Man/Sask teams) and a West division (always including the BC teams). The Edmonton teams played one year in the East, then switched to West, and the Calgary teams did the reverse. This year, the four Alberta teams are in Division "A" and the Man/Sask teams join BC in Division "B".

Also, playoff berths were (and are) allocated on a divisional basis. The 2nd and 3rd place teams cross-over in the quarter-finals, with the winners also doing a cross-over with the 1st place teams in the semi-finals. So if you're confused as to how Alberta made the playoffs yet was 7th, and Manitoba missed and was 6th, this was how.

This year, the Bisons get a break. They need to finish in the top three of a division which includes UBC, Sask, Regina, and Trinity. I have a hunch that the Bisons will be hunkered down in 3rd place fairly early without much chance of moving up or down.

Before the pre-season, I had UBC and Sask set to fight in out for top spot in this division.  The T-irds had a great regular season last year (23-2-3), before losing to Sask in the semi-finals. But they have stumbled in this pre-season, going 3-2-2 against CW teams. They are just one OTL short of last year's loss record. One unique thing is that they lost games where they outshot their opponent, then did the vice versa against MRU. They started with a shoot-out loss against Holy Trinity, then beat U-Vic in a BCIHL game to salvage the opening weekend. They did show progress each weekend, going from no wins to one win then to two wins.

One concern is with the shrinking Bison roster, now down to 23 players. Two previously announced recruits (goalie Austin Dubinsky and defenceman Cole Unger) never appeared on the exhibition roster. Returning forward Miguel Bouvier played in the home games against Regina, but then left the roster. Now, recruit London Hoilett has left the roster. He did not dress for the home series against Regina, but then played in Regina. They did add a 3rd goaltender, Justin Perreault. None of the departed players have surfaced elsewhere. In fact, Hoilett is still listed as a Bison at Elite Prospects.

These teams finished last in their respective divisions the past two seasons, so now at least one will be assured of escaping the cellar this year. Holy Trinity has been last overall in the CW every year since joining in the Covid-cancelled 2020-21 season. Their point totals have gone from 5 to 7 to 9 (twice) to a record 11 last year.

Meanwhile, the Banjo-Cats have made the playoffs twice in the last 12 seasons, in 2022 and 2023. In the race for 8th with Trinity, they split their last three series, against Sask, Manitoba, and Trinity, to avoid the basement.

The Spartans have two marquee players in Mikhailo Simchuk (28 GP, 16 G, 14 A, 30 Pts) and Christian Lowe (26 GP, 11 G, 19 A, 30 Pts). Regina does not have the equivalent. In fact, they lost their veteran scoring talent due to graduation. In person, they looked fairly organized and could present as a difficult opponent. In 6 games against Manitoba and Sask, they had just one loss beyond a one-goal difference.

CALGARY DINOSAURS (2025-26: 19-8-1, 4th in CW, 3-2-0, OHT35 #5)
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2025-26: 19-7-2, 3rd in CW, won playoffs, 7-2-0, OHT35 #7)

This could be the best match-up of the weekend. These teams were 3rd and 4th last year, and the Banjo-Mutts won the playoff championship. They met in the pre-season, with Sask winning 8-0 and Bedrock U rebounding to win 5-4. Calgary did lose their top scoring forward and defenceman, and one of their goaltending tandem, but they have returned 22 players. Sask returns 19 players, though they have taken a hit with their top three scorers graduated. These are among the most veteran-heavy rosters in the country.

The Bluegars have lost a lot of scoring punch (4 of top 6 forwards), plus Clay Hanus with Bobby Orr-level scoring numbers from the blueline. Their uploaded story covers their Swedish recruits. They may not finish 2nd overall, but they will still be a strong team expected to challenge for first in their division. They were 1-2-0 against CW teams in pre-season.

The Family Guys showed they could dominate the OUA in pre-season (3-0-0) but they were 0-2-0 against Alberta in their only CW match-up. They finished ahead of those Evil Monkeys last year, and must do so again this year if they want a playoff berth from the new Saudi Alberta Division. Their goaltending and forwards look to be solid, but they took a hit on defence. They lost their top four offensive defencemen.

The Evil Monkeys start with a bye week, and slotted in a non-conference match-up against NAIT, in a second consecutive Battle of Edmontown. Many observers thought that there was a severe banana shortage in Edmontown, after they finished 7th overall a year ago. They have replaced all three goaltenders. They have returned two of their top six defencemen. Only one of their top six scorers has returned. Their recruiting class includes a mixed bag of WHL, transfers from NCAA, U-Sports, and ACAC, and Junior A. After last years mass roster-raid, they have had to dip into alternative sources for players. They might be better on ice than on paper. They were 5-1-0 against CW teams in the pre-season.

NAIT have swept two games against Portage College, then were shut-out by Holy Trinity twice last weekend. I guess we'll see if Trinity is better than expected or if the gap between the CW and ACAC is growing.

Man: T. Willick  (11:43 2nd) , S. Bruce  (03:24 3rd) , C. Zaplitny  (08:11 3rd)
UBC: B. Schuurman  (07:20 1st) , Q. Disher  (14:16 2nd)
Goal: Man: Holt (36 shots, 34 saves), UBC: Schwebius (26 shots, 23 saves)

The Bisons have snapped a 17-game losing streak against the T-irds, going back to 2019. Prior to that, the Bisons had a decisive edge over the T-irds. So this is a great way to start the season.

The Bison scratches were Justin Perreault, Nolan Chastko, and Liam Longo. During the game, the Hockey Tech Game Centre page also listed London Hoilett in the line-up, but he is not on the Bison roster page.

The 1st period was fairly even. UBC scored the only goal when Tanner Willick fired a pass from his own end up the centre of the ice. Brayden Schuurman intercepted the pass, did a dipsy-doo around Willick, and deked Brayden Holt in net for the goal.

Willick evened the game in the 2nd period, before Quinn Disher restored the UBC lead. The period ended with the "War at 18:12". Austin Fraser charged into Holt chasing a rebound and was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct. Bison Kaycee Coyle and T-ird Josh Williams each had roughing minors and a 10-minute misconduct in the ensuing pushing and shoving.

Although the shots were 13-12 in favour of UBC in the 3rd, the Bisons had by far the better quality chances. Skylar Bruce and Caden Zaplitny scored, and Dawson Pasternak had two assists.

UBC and Regina haven't yet posted game stories. So wait until Saturday for those. Unusual to have away teams posting, and home teams not.

Goal: TWU: Audet (31 shots, 25 saves), Reg: Cunningham (31 shots, 27 saves)

My ability to watch multiple games was strained this Friday night, and this one caught my attention from time-to-time. The shots were dead-even and the play (for two periods) was high energy back-and-forth action. It was 3-3 after the 1st, and 5-4 for Regina after the 2nd.  The 3rd reverted to much more defensive play, with Regina limited to just four shots. Eric Hoiness notched a hat-trick for the winners. If the Banjo-Cats could start the season with a sweep they could break out the moonshine. It won't be easy. Holy Trinity seems to be less of a push-over this year.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (32 shots, 28 saves), Sask: Maier (16 shots, 13 saves)

This game garnered my second-most attention this evening. Mid-way through the 3rd period, Bedrock U scored shorthanded to take a 3-1 lead despite being outplayed for most of the game. However, before the penalty was up, Sask made it 3-2. A couple more Dino penalties created another PP, and the Mutts cashed in to tie the game. Landon Kosior scored the winner with just over one minute to play. In all, seven different players scored in this one.

This one was the sacrificial lamb on my multi-screen viewing feast. Once the Bison game started at 9:00 p.m., I had no spare screens left for it. The Bluegars looked to be the stronger side, by some margin. Sam Ward of The Family Guys and Dawson Seitz of the Bluegars each scored twice.

Goal: NAIT: Maxfield L (37 shots, 30 saves), Dekok (12 shots, 10 saves), Alta: Langkow (11 shots, 10 saves)

Well, the good news is that NAIT had a 1-0 lead, thus exceeding their goal total from last weekend against TWU. It would appear that the CW has enlarged the gulf between it and the ACAC now. Although, earlier in the pre-season Red Deer Poly took the Evil Monkeys to overtime, as did Augustana against MacEwan. This game was not, to my knowledge, streamed.

October 10, 2026: T-IRDS BOUNCE BACK FOR SPLIT

➤ UBC (Friday late): Bisons hand T-Birds 3-2 home opening loss (with boxscore & video)
➤ UBC: Schwebius stones Bisons as 'Birds split opening weekend (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Man: none
UBC: B. Schuurman  (11:59 1st) , J. Williams  (03:23 2nd) , J. Williams  (00:27 3rd)
Goal: Man: Kieper (24 shots, 21 saves), UBC: Schwebius (16 shots, 16 saves)

There is a late update on Friday's game. The first Bison goal, originally credited to Tanner Willick, is now credited to Joel Purdom. He deflected Willick's shot.

The T-irds rebounded for a split on home ice, which is not unexpected. The Bisons are likely happy with a 2-point win on the road trip. The Bisons went with the same line-up as they had on Friday, but for Matthew Kieper being the starting goaltender.

UBC had one goal per period in a very low-event type of game. After two periods the shots were just 13-9 in favour of UBC. They had a more "normal" 11 shots in the 3rd to end ahead 24-16.

As on Friday, Brayden Schuurman opened the scoring for UBC. He stepped out of the penalty box and was fed a breakaway pass. He then assisted on Josh Williams' 2nd and 3rd period goals.

The Bison home opener goes next Friday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

With three NHL games, plus one in the CFL and one in MLB, once the Bison game ended I had one device for each CW game. Since they all started at 6:00 CDT, there was no option! This one got the new cell phone treatment, below Calgary at Saskatchewan (on the tablet) and MRU at MacEwan (on the old cell phone).

The Banjo-Cats were led by Cole Wirun, whose two goals give him three on the season. Mikhaillo Simchuk had two for the Spartans. The game was a bit chippy, leading to three PP goals. The sweep (in regulation) gives a boost to the Cats. The standings will not look so imposing for a while at least. Now, can Holy Trinity beat UBC in a regular season game?

Like the Bison game, I would call this a "low event" encounter. Through two periods there were no penalties and a combined 26 shots. Things picked up in the 3rd, where the Dinos took three penalties, one of which led to a PP goal. At the final whistle, Banjo-Mutt Ashton Ferster got a two minute roughing penalty and a game misconduct. That is strange. The Mutts are in town next weekend so I can see them in person.

Though this one was relegated to my least-favoured screen, that was all I needed to bear witness to this dominating win for the Bluegars. The Family Guys showed that they could handle three OUA teams in the pre-season, but they have been having a tough time in Saudi Alberta. Maddux Martin's two goals and one assist led the way for MRU.

Last series:
➤ Jan 9/26: Sask 3, Man 2: Game Centre
➤ Jan 10/26: Sask 5, Man 4: Game Centre

Here come the Banjo-Mutts! They finished 3rd overall a year ago but then knocked off Alberta (at home) then UBC and MRU (on the road) in the playoffs to win the CW's conference championship. They went 6-0 in the process.

The head-to-head series these teams played at the Wayne Fleming Arena back in January was among the best hockey we had a chance to see last year. Unfortunately, the Bisons were unable to hang on to their leads in those encounters.

Thus far, Sask ranks #1 in Canada in the OHT35 rankings. They went 3-0 against Euro pros, then finished the pre-season going 4-2 against CW teams, and that set them up for a sweep over Calgary last weekend.

The Bisons are a touch above average thus far, ranking #15 nationally. In pre-season they were 3-1 against Regina, and 1-3 against a tough slate of NCAA opposition. I was concerned that the pre-season schedule may have been too onerous, but it seemed to serve them well when they ventured out to the coast. A well-deserved split on the road against UBC (1st place last year), if combined with a split here, would leave the Herd well-positioned. UBC and Sask are the top two teams in the CW Coaches' Poll.

Both sides are likely to rotate their goaltenders. For Sask, Nolan Maier played last Friday and then Bryan Thomson racked up a shut-out on Saturday. For Manitoba, Braden Holt started last Friday and Matthew Kieper followed on Saturday.

The Bisons had their six returning defencemen suit up for both games. Newcomer Liam Longo was scratched. Also scratched were forward Nolan Chastko (I am guessing he was injured since he missed games on the USA tour) and 3rd goalie Justin Perreault. The CW Hockey Tech stats continue to list new forward London Hoilett, although the Bisons' roster page does not list him. Maybe he's anticipated to be a second semester addition.

Rookie Banjo-Cat Jye Zawatsky was awarded the BioSteel Player-of-the-Week for CW men's hockey. He had a goal and two assists in each game against Trinity Western last weekend. So he's the CW's leading scorer for the first-place Kittens. Those things may not hold on for much longer, so let the moonshine flow for now.

Bedrock U has 22 returning players, so experience will favour them. Although outplayed by Sask last weekend, the Dinos gave them a good battle and should be the favourites here.

First, note that the Saturday game of this series is scheduled to be streamed free on CBC Gem and YouTube. That game will be played at Alberta's temporary home in Nisku, AB at the Hatch Arena in the Silent Ice Center. The Clare Drake Arena is undergoing renovations this year.

These teams continue the Battle of Edmontown theme. Two weeks ago, the Evil Monkeys swept The Family Guys in exhibition games. Last week, while MacEwan started their regular season, the Monkeys filled in a bye week by sweeping NAIT.

MacEwan actually finished ahead of Alberta last year. But this year it is looking like they have taken a step back. After 3-straight wins over OUA teams, they were swept by Alberta (in pre-season) and MRU (in regular season). It gets late early in a 28-game season. Two losses here would put them in deep trouble.

Sam Ward was MacEwan's 2nd star last week. The linked story includes a video clip. He also got his SJHL championship ring from the Flin Flon Bombers.

➤ TWU: This Week In Sparta

The last series on this weekend's menu is another Battle of British California. Since Holy Trinity joined the CW, they lost 35 straight games to the T-irds. That streak ended with a shoot-out win on September 11, 2026. Now, can they do it in the regular season?

While the Spartans have shown they can beat out-of-conference opposition (3-0-0 against the BCIHL and 2-0-0 against the ACAC), their 0-2-0 weekend in Regina is a lost opportunity. I suspect that they will no longer be a free square on the bingo card this year. That said, I am not expecting them to challenge UBC and Sask, or even Manitoba, in Division "B" this year. In five complete seasons in the CW, last year's 4-21-3 record was their best. I hope they can top that.

For UBC, 2026 was their best-ever record (23-2-3), and their second 1st place finish in three years. However, the were swept in two straight by Saskatchewan in the semi-finals and thus not qualified for the University Cup. Their program is in an uptick period now and needs to cash in. Their pre-season was so-so, and a home split against Manitoba is also so-so. They need a convincing sweep here.

The Ubyssey student paper at UBC had good game stories about last week's series (as linked). I added them to the link post.

MRU has a bye this week but did announce that Dawson Seitz received the MRU Athlete of the Week honours for last week. He had two goals and an assist on Friday, and another goal and assist on Saturday.
