Quote from: theaardvark on February 08, 2026, 05:04:13 PMAgain, they could make any changes they wanted, there was far more they could do to Americanize the league.

Moving goalposts, taking 10 yards length out of the field and changing the clock are not "American" changes.

4 downs, 11 men, no ratio, narrower field, there were so many more ways they could have "Americanize" the game.  But they chose a few cosmetic changes to update the game.

Again, I would be more open to the changes if they werent the league's only major initiative so far to attract new fans.

I am still waiting for other efforts to enhance fans' experiences.

It's craptacular.

Funny, I watched the second half of the Super Bowl yesterday just to see what all the fuss was about and my initial conclusion was great athletes, not enough space to demonstrate their abilities properly. Same goes for hockey, giving them more space to perform would make the game way more exciting. Imagine soccer if they drastically shrunk the field, it would cause less excitement and more congestion.

Which is why the CFL is so much better, with the larger end zones and 65 yard wide field and 12 players.

Taking 10 yards off the length does not affect the "room" to play, and 5 yards off the EZ but removing the goal post/uprights should make even more room, 50% more than the NFL, and effectively the same of more than the 20yd CFL obstructed view.

Watching the superb owl yesterday was painful, as you said, great talent but no room.  Players keep getting bigger and faster, and keep running out of room.  65 yard wide field is huge.  15yard deep EZ is ginormous.

Quote from: theaardvark on February 08, 2026, 11:04:55 PMIs the EZ configuration in NFL/NCAA a better design than what is presently used in the CFL?  Is it a "better idea"?  Regardless tradition, it is a better layout?  I guess we will see if it works better.

The field is still 15 yards wider and still 10 yards longer.  There is no way to think it could be mistaken for American.  And it sounds like the clock won't be changing during the most important time.

If fans have to ask that question because the league has not answered it, that's the problem.

He's just stating the obvious and what the rest of us have been saying since Stu made the announcement. I have no prob1em with the proposed fie1d changes if they are indeed to support Canadian expansion and the economic viabi1ity of the 1eague and  maintain the ratio etc, but just be honest with us, dont te11 us its to make the game more exciting, because the changes wont

Quote from: Jesse on December 04, 2025, 11:39:41 AMDo you watch hockey? I don't even really understand the rules of the game and the difference between the AHL and NHL is very pronounced.

I've attended games over the years from Junior A, Major Jr., Usport, AHL and NHL over last six decades.

But I'm still strongly opposed to Americanizing our game by eliminating the 55 yard line!

Another stadium that fits without the 55yd line and 15 Yd deep EZ's.  See how the new field will fit the infield of any track and field tracks.

Has the CFl stopped publishing "fines of the week"?

I've stated many times and you refuse to acknowledge that the Molson (and Kelowna) corner problem can be solved simply by making all EZ's 12.5Y deep (or close to that), without any other field size changes.

If you ask fans to choose:
a) Make all EZ's 12.5Y deep (or whatever)
or
b) Lose the 55, make fields 100Y, AND make EZ's 15Y or 10Y deep

Which do you think 99% of fans will choose.  You're giving people a false dichotomy.

The league could also just mandate proper sized fields (110+20).  Don't give teams the option.  Don't have that field?  You're not a team.  We could give the league X years to comply... as MTL will in a couple of years have the option of returning to Olympic Stadium after its reno.

Most sports have rules for non standard surfaces. There is usually an aspect of the playing surface that is standardized and another aspect that allows for variation.

Baseball - the infield is standardized, the outfield allows for variation

Soccer - the penalty area is standardized

Hockey - the offensive/defensive zones are standardized, any variation comes out of the neutral zone

Australian Football - the 50 metre arc is standardized, most fields vary in length and/or width

Canadian Football - the field between the goal lines is standardized, bylaws allow for differences in end zone size.

I'm not sure why this is suddenly an issue. CFL has dealt with truncated end zones for decades.

This is a bit misleading and we should delineate sport from league and also reasonable accomodation vs different by choice:

NFL - one field, one size, one standard (100 yard field,53 and a third wide, 10 yard end zones)(grass/artificial)

NHL - one rink, one size, one standard, same everything (200x85 ft).

NBA - one court, one size, one standard, same everything (94 x 50 ft)

EPL - one field, one size, one standard (105x68 m) Liverpool still has an exemption but a new land footprint would probably necessitate alignment. An example of reasonable accomodation for now, since they can't conjure land and make it bigger. If the field was too big, they'd have redrawn lines years ago.

FIFA - 105 x 68 is their standard although they've got the entire world of buildings to deal with. The entire world cup right now is standardized to that spec though.

Some sports allow for variation by design: MLB, AFL, Cricket but it's intentional or at least the sport has been built around the differences to the degree it's part of it. Different sized outfields adds flavor to baseball. In contrast, I have been watching the CFL all my life and no one has ever said having cut off corners in one field is exciting. If you're standardizing everything anyways, get rid of them.

Just don't build a CFL stadium that doesn't fit a proper CFL field. That's what we did.

The ability to host a one-off game in Kelowna isn't changing hearts and minds lmao. So weird we're having this conversation in 2026.

The City of Regina will indeed ask the CFL to chip in for new turf at Mosaic Stadium as the league prepares to modify its field dimensions next season....

CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston also hinted in the past that there could be funds available to help pay for new fields.
