Blue Bombers Sign All-Star Jake Ceresna
February 6, 2026

WINNIPEG, MB., February 6, 2026 –   The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed All-CFL defensive lineman Jake Ceresna to a two- year contract. Ceresna's rights were transferred by Edmonton to Winnipeg today.

Ceresna
(6-4, 295; Cortland State; born: July 9, 1994, in New Fairfield, CT) joins the Blue Bombers after spending last season with the Edmonton Elks and following previous stints with the Toronto Argonauts (2024), Edmonton (2018-23) and the Ottawa Redblacks (2017).

A two-time All-CFL (2022, 2024), Ceresna is a veteran of 102 Canadian Football League regular season games and was a member of the 2024 Grey Cup champion Argonauts. He returned to Edmonton as a free agent in 2025.

Ceresna is coming off a 2025 campaign in which his production was impacted by an injury he attempted to play through before having season come to an end in the Labour Day Classic. He finished the year with 16 defensive tackles, one sack and one interception in 11 games.

A versatile lineman who has started games at both defensive end and defensive tackle, Ceresna has 201 defensive tackles, 46 quarterback sacks and seven forced fumbles in his CFL career.

He posted a career high 12 sacks in 2023 with the Elks, following a 2022 season in which he had 10 sacks and was named Edmonton's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Ceresna's CFL career began with Ottawa in 2017, and he was then traded to Edmonton in February of 2018 for defensive end Odell Willis. He was traded again in January of 2024 along with the rights to a player off Edmonton's negotiation list to Toronto for receiver Kurleigh Gittens, Jr. and a seventh-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft.

Ceresna first turned pro with the New York Jets in 2016 as an undrafted free agent and following a collegiate career split between Southern Connecticut State (2012) and Cortland State (2013-15).

1st & 10 - Ceresna on board
February 6, 2026   Ed Tait

The curtains are going to go up Tuesday morning on the first official day of Canadian Football League free agency with most who follow this grand ol' loop already knowing how the plot is about to all unfold and where all the main characters are going to land.

The league's 'legal tampering period' — that week-long window which opened last Sunday and allowed pending free agents and their representatives to speak with all interested suitors — has already taken 99.9 percent of the drama out of the event courtesy all the reported signings across the league, including here in Winnipeg.

Defensive lineman Jake Ceresna's addition to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers was made official on Friday, five days after it was first reported, with the announcements of the additions of offensive tackle Jarell Broxton, cornerback Jonathan Moxey and receiver Tommy Nield soon to follow early next week. And it's certainly not unique to our market, with that kind of player movement has already having happened all across the league.

Now, go ahead and debate the merits/flaws in how the legal tampering window works — that's potentially another column for another time — but with the Blue Bombers having already done much of their heavy lifting in advance Tuesday's official market opening, we keep getting the same questions from fans over the last few days.

And so, as we open another edition of 1st & 10, here is one man's opinion on the three most-common queries...

1 What's left for the Blue Bombers to do?

Not much, frankly, although they may still kick the tires on some of the CFL free agents still available on the market.

Adding Ceresna and Broxton considerably beefed up the Blue Bombers at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Moxey fills a hole at cornerback with a proven veteran starter and Nield adds a young up-and-coming Canadian to the receiving corps that already landed former Hamilton Tiger-Cat star Tim White at the end of last month.

Remember, too, all the work the club did before the legal tampering window opened by re-signing several key players since the end of the 2025 season.

That list includes running back Brady Oliveira, receivers Nic Demski and Gavin Cobb, offensive linemen Stanley Bryant, Pat Neufeld and Tui Eli, defensive linemen Willie Jefferson, Cam Lawson and Tanner Schmekel, defensive backs Deatrick Nichols, Evan Holm, Redha Kramdi and Michael Griffin II, linebackers Kyrie Wilson and Tanner Cadwallader, kicker Sergio Castillo and punter Jamieson Sheahan.

Of the remaining players on the Blue Bombers list of pending free agents defensive end James Vaughters has reportedly signed with Saskatchewan, receiver Jerreth Sterns with Montreal and cornerback Demerio Houston with Ottawa; centre Chris Kolankowski was already released and has landed in Hamilton, as has offensive tackle Eric Lofton, defensive back Jamal Parker was released in December and is a pending free agent, as are defensive tackle Jamal Woods, receivers Dalton Schoen, Keric Wheatfall, Dillon Mitchell and Cody Kase, defensive backs Nick Hallett, Dexter Lawson, Terrell Bonds, Enock Makonzo, quarterback Chris Streveler and linebacker Shayne Gauthier.

Also on that list is Jake Thomas, who retired to become the team's new defensive line coach.

Seeing that 17 players were re-signed and Ceresna, Broxton, Moxey, Nield and White would have all commanded considerable dollars on the market, the Blue Bombers may very well now be tapped out with respect to the cap, even with its expected bump to $6.28 million, up $220,000 from last year.

2 WHAT ABOUT A VETERAN QB TO BACK UP ZACH COLLAROS?

Fair question, given Collaros missed five starts last year and didn't finish three other games due to injury and with Streveler coming off a knee injury suffered in the regular-season finale and soon to hit the market.

The sense is the club won't be pursuing Montreal's Caleb Evans, McLeod Bethel-Thompson or Shea Patterson (who was here last year before being released), Tyrie Adams of Ottawa or any other QB with even a smidge of CFL experience on the market.

A couple of reasons for that — first, they used their available cap space to lock up the 17 players mentioned above who are returning and then spent significantly on the new faces.

And second, there's the thought the Blue Bombers may have their future No. 2 among the QBs under contract — returnees Terry Wilson and Chase Artopoeus, former UFL MVP and Los Angeles Ram Bryce Perkins and former Michigan State/Auburn starter Payton Thorne, who was in camp with the Cincinnati Bengals last year.

3 DOES BROXTON MOVE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT TACKLE AND WHAT DOES NIELD'S ADDITION MEAN TO THE RECEIVING CORPS?

We're going to address a couple questions here in one chunk...

Broxton has played left tackle for the B.C. Lions the last few years and the Blue Bombers have future hall of famer Stanley Bryant locked in at the left flank. Broxton is apparently good with moving to right tackle and will likely be the heir apparent to Bryant at left tackle if the big man every does hang 'em up. So, file this under 'nice problem to have' for the moment.

Kendall Randolph, who played right tackle all of last year, may also get some looks at guard along with Micah Vanterpool, who impressed in spot duty last year. This fuels the narrative the club is tinkering with using three Americans along the O-line.

Nield indirectly has a role in that, too, as he gives the team the option of starting three Canadians in the receiving corps with Demski and with Kevens Clercius, Cobb and Joey Corcoran — and perhaps a draft pick — in the discussion for a third spot alongside White and Pokey Wilson. There are also seven other new Americans already signed, with more possibly to follow.

Blue Bombers agree to terms with linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox
February 10, 2026

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox.

Santos-Knox (6-2, 240; University of Massachusetts; born: July 5, 1994, in Waterbury, Connecticut) returns to the Blue Bombers after beginning his CFL career with the club in 2017. He spent his first two seasons (2017-18) in Winnipeg, followed by Edmonton (2019), Hamilton (2021-22) and the last three seasons in Ottawa (2023-25).

Santos-Knox, 31, is a veteran of 111 regular season CFL games and has amassed 528 defensive tackles, 16 sacks, five interceptions and four forced fumbles.

Blue Bombers Sign All-CFL offensive lineman Jarell Broxton to two-year contract
February 10, 2026

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed Canadian Football League All-Star offensive tackle Jarell Broxton to a two-year contract.

Broxton
(6-5, 325; Baylor University; born: March 27, 1993, in Olney, MD) joins the Blue Bombers in 2026 for what will be his sixth season in the CFL after spending the last five years with the B.C. Lions.

Broxton, 32, was widely considered the top offensive lineman available on the free agent market after a 2025 season in which he appeared in 16 games and was part of an offensive line that allowed the fewest sacks in the league and an offence that set a new CFL record by averaging 8.04 yards per play.

He was named an All-CFL and West Division All-CFL after posting a league-best Pro Football Focus grade of 81.2 in pass protection and was named B.C.'s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman for three consecutive seasons in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Of note, Broxton had initially signed with the Blue Bombers in February of 2020 but did not play that year due to the cancellation of the CFL season. He then joined the Lions in 2021 and suited up for 51 games over his five years with the team, all of them starts.
Broxton first turned pro in 2016 as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens and spent two seasons on the practice roster there. He was a member of the Arena Football League's Baltimore Brigade in 2019.

He began his college days at Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania (2011-13) before transferring to Baylor (2014-15) where started 21 of 26 games at right guard, helping the Bears win the Big 12 championship in 2014. He earned All-Big 12 First Team Honours in 2015.

Ceresna: "Go where you're wanted."
February 10, 2026   Ed Tait

Let's not kid ourselves here on the first official day of Canadian Football League free agency: the numbers on the paycheque always matter. Yet Jake Ceresna has his own personal motto which certainly fit his approach to the open talent market and trying to put down roots in a business that can often be so nomadic.

And it goes like this: 'Go where you're wanted.'

That credo was a major factor in Ceresna becoming a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the signing first reported on February 2nd and made official today. He broke into the CFL in 2017 with Ottawa, has had two stints with Edmonton wrapped around a year in Toronto. He's been traded twice and has now changed teams twice in free agency.

So, heck yeah, stability means a ton for the 31-year-old two-time CFL All-Star — especially after an 2025 season in Edmonton pockmarked by a meniscus injury and then the Elks being lukewarm in their approach to re-signing him.

"It was funny... I thought it was going to work out, and we were going to get a contract done," said Ceresna on Tuesday during a media conference at Princess Auto Stadium. "But it just didn't materialize and then I hit free agency and there were other teams out there that expressed more interest and there's a saying I always have that's, 'Go where you're wanted.' I want to be somewhere that wants me and I want them and if we have a great relationship, we can make it work."

Ceresna referenced the Blue Bombers vaunted culture, adding, '"It's a winning organization, a great organization. There was big interest from this team to bring me in here and the feelings were mutual. I'm happy it happened. I'm excited to be here.

"... There's guys that stay here and they stay here for a long time. I don't think that's an accident. The group of guys that are here — Zach Collaros, Stanley Bryant, Willie Jefferson, those are household names in this league, and they've been here for a while so you know the organization is doing something right.

"When the opportunity presented itself to come here and be a part of something like that, I jumped on it."

Ceresna's addition came on a day when the Blue Bombers also made official the additions previously reported in offensive tackle Jarell Broxton, Canadian receiver Tommy Nield and veteran cornerback Jonathan Moxey — ex of the B.C. Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats — while also bringing back linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox, who began his career here and was sensational last year in Ottawa.

The signing of Ceresna and Broxton significantly beef up Winnipeg on both sides of the line of scrimmage, Nield is coming off a career year with the Roughriders and, at 26, seemingly has yet to reach his ceiling, while Moxey joins a secondary teeming with experience in Evan Holm, Deatrick Nichols and Redha Kramdi. Santos-Knox bolsters a linebacking corps already stacked with Tony Jones, Kyrie Wilson, Michael Ayers, Jaiden Woodbey and Canadians Tanner Cadwallader, Connor Shay and Jaylen Smith.

Ceresna came to Winnipeg late Monday to get his work permit set up and to then get a feel for his new surroundings, including a workout session Tuesday morning. He is coming off a bucket handle meniscus tear suffered last season, which limited him to 11 games.

"I'm running, jumping, squatting heavy in the gym, so everything is going great. I feel strong," he said. "My body is the best its' felt going into the season for the past four years that I can remember. I feel great.

"When you get hurt, the rest of the nicks and bruises heal up, too, that bother you from season to season. I just feel great. I feel ready to go. I'd start tomorrow if I could."

Ceresna said Stanley Bryant was the first player to reach out to him, but he also heard from Nichols, Brady Oliveira, new defensive line coach Jake Thomas and Zach Collaros, whose pitch was along the lines of 'Hey, how about you join my team and stop hitting me?'

That show of love came at an important time, with the clock ticking the minute the negotiating window opens.

"It's a little stressful because you don't know where you're going. You've got make your decision quickly," he said. "Teams want to get a commitment so they can construct their roster. So, it became between Winnipeg and another team, and I just felt like where I'm at with my career and with my family and everything that this was the place to be and I'm excited for it. I can't wait to play in front of these fans, with these teammates. I'm trying to win, I'm trying to win a Grey Cup so, I'm all in.

"... Going into my career, when I started in Ottawa, I thought I was going to be a Redblack for life. Then I went to Edmonton and thought I was going to be an Edmonton guy for life. I always wanted continuity but sometimes that's not how the coins fall.  I'm hoping to be here for a long time. I'm hoping to be here for five, six years if I can finish up my career here."

Near the end of his media session Ceresna was asked about joining the Blue Bombers after a down year, a notion which brought a wide grin to his face.

"We're talking about a down year, and they were 10-8. By their standards, yeah," he said with a chuckle. "I've been 4-14 in this league a couple times. I think we're going to be okay.

"Zach Collaros is still a great player, Brady Oliveira's great. A lot of guys here got a chip on their shoulder, and they've got something to prove, just like I do. And we'll see what happens."
