Calgary Stampeders lose top receiver Dominique Rhymes, regain rookie Damien Alford for clash with Riders
By 3Down Staff -August 22, 2025

The Calgary Stampeders will have a very different look in the receiving corps when they face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.

The team's top target, Dominique Rhymes, has been placed on the one-game injured list after missing practice this week with a quad injury. The 32-year-old has caught 30 passes for 543 yards and three touchdowns through nine games to lead the team. Also slated to miss this week due to illness is fellow American receiver Tevin Jones, who has 28 catches for 376 yards and two majors.

Fortunately, the team will get a major boost to the same unit with the return of first-overall CFL Draft pick Damien Alford following his recovery from a hamstring injury. The six-foot-six Canadian exploded on the scene in three starts before going down, catching 13 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns.

American Daylen Baldwin will dress in the other vacant starting role, while Canadian Vyshonne Janusas returns to the lineup for depth. Backup running back Ludovick Choquette will return to the practice roster in a corresponding move.

Defensively, 2024 first-round draft pick Ben Labrosse returns to the defensive backfield and will back up Godfrey Onyeka at corner. American Shaun Peterson will dress for depth at defensive end, as Canadians George Idoko and Anthony Federico head back to the practice roster.

The team will also be making a change at punter, as first-round Global Draft pick Fraser Masin has been demoted in favour of second-rounder Mark Vassett.

The Calgary Stampeders (6-3) will host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-1) at McMahon Stadium on Saturday, August 23 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off a 29-9 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, while the Stampeders were on a bye.

The weather forecast in Calgary calls for a high of 23 degrees with clear conditions. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 620 CKRM in Regina and 770 CHQR in Calgary.

Saskatchewan Roughriders without top special teams tackler Nick Wiebe vs Calgary
By 3Down Staff -August 22, 2025

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are extremely healthy heading into their top of the West Division clash with the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday.

Backup Canadian linebacker Nick Wiebe is the only player added to the one-game injured list this week after he sat out the final two practice sessions with a knee injury. The second-year man has been a force in kick coverage this season, notching 10 special teams tackles in nine appearances to lead the team.

Fullback Morgen Runge returns to the lineup to fill that void. The product of Whitecourt, Alta. played the first four games of the season, notching one catch for four yards.

Five other players remain on the one-game injured list with Wiebe, though all of them practiced this week. Quarterback Jack Coan (hand), receiver Shawn Bane Jr. (knee), and defensive back Antoine Brooks (healthy scratch) were full participants, while returner Mario Alford (hip) and offensive lineman Daniel Johnson (shoulder) were limited.

The six-game injured list is more extensive but remains unchanged. Those still out long term include running backs Ka'Deem Carey and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon; receivers Samuel Emilus and Kian Schaffer-Baker; offensive linemen Sean McEwen, Philippe Gagnon, and Trevon Tate; defensive linemen Lake Korte-Moore and Charbel Dabire; and linebackers C.J. Avery and Aubrey Miller Jr.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-1) will visit the Calgary Stampeders (6-3) at McMahon Stadium on Saturday, August 23 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Roughriders are coming off a 29-9 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, while the Stampeders were on a bye.

The weather forecast in Calgary calls for a high of 243 degrees with clear conditions. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 620 CKRM in Regina and 770 CHQR in Calgary.

Stats Junkie

Calgary is going back to Mark Vassett as their punter. I'd be curious to know if this was a request from Rene Paredes.

6 games with Fraser Masin as holder (14/20 FGs | 10/10 converts)
4 games with Mark Vassett as holder (3/3 FGs | 14/15 converts)

I don't care what temperature scale is used, 243 degrees is an extreme temperature.

Believe it or not 243 degrees Kelvin is only -30 Celsius, tough sledding weather for sure but fine for a football game.

Riders defensive back Marcus Sayles has been downgraded to a game-time decision for tomorrow's game.

I did the Kelvin conversion before I posted. I probably should have added 'for football' after 'extreme temperature'.

It's great, put a nice cut of roast on the seat next to you before KO, and feast on some nice slow-cooked meat post-game.  I'm partial to pork shoulder or brisket!
Never go full Rider!

Do we want SSK or CGY to win?  I think it comes down to whether we're resigned to SSK winning the West and abandoning our home WDF hopes.  Not that the team would do that, but how do we feel about it?

If we are resigned, then we want SSK to win because them having 100 wins is the same as 14 from a home-WDF standpoint.

If we want a shot at home WDF (me me me!) then it's better if CGY wins because it makes the W a 3-way race and we're only 2 W behind SSK (and we could win the season series!).

So normally I'd be ABC, but in this case go VAJ!

And, as is normal on the Riderforum when it's a WPG vs anyone game: "I hope both teams beat each other up".  In that sense, a super close slobberknocker is ideal.

I am holding onto my belief of a Calgary win, followed by a LBC/BB sweep, vaulting us into first place.
My wife is amazing!

Calgary win and Bombers sweep Sask is what I'm hoping

Will be at the game (I live in Calgary and still maintained my season tickets). Only been to 2 games this year. This will be my 3rd. Good news is that the game day sales have been very good so should be a near full house for a change. I am leaning toward a Calgary win but have my doubts. I would like to see a Calgary win and then maybe we split the 2 coming up with the Riders. Hard to favor Calgary as the Riders are probably the team to beat in the West this year.

I'm definitely pulling for Calgary in this one. I just can't think of a circumstance where I'd ever pull for the Riders, ever.
