Winnipeg Blue Bombers add defensive back

WINNIPEG, MB., March 27, 2025 – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American defensive back Tay Gowan.

Gowan (6-2, 185; UCF; born: January 7, 1998, in Covington, GA) most recently spent last year's training camp with the Tennessee Titans, recording four tackles and one pass breakup in three preseason games. Originally drafted by Arizona in the 6th round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Gowan was traded to Philadelphia in October of that year, seeing action in two games with the Eagles. Gowan also played three games with the Vikings in 2022, and one game with the Titans in 2023.

He transferred to UCF for his final collegiate season in 2019-2020 season, making 31 tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, and one fumble recovery in 12 games for the Knights. He opted out of the 2020 season.

Really like this signing. Was a prospect I really liked in his draft year for my Jags. I could see him being similar to Terrell Bonds, comes in, wins a job and plays lights out.

Well there will be a bunch of CFL rookies that will be fighting for spots on the roster. He is one of them to watch in TC to see how he transitions to the CFL game.

Nice size. Would be nice to have some height on the corners if he's fast, like Brandon Browner.

I have never, ever heard somebody say, "m'Jags".

Impressed with his size, however he has a few weaknesses. The 3 that stood out for me was, below average closing burst, and doesn't find the deep balls consistently, loses to much coverage at break points.

Yeah, those are not great aspects to his skill sets. Whether more coaching and playing time improve in a given player is always the question.

We know the CFL game is different than the NFL game. Lots of players with " weaknesses " do better in the CFL. Conversely some players with what appear to be greater skill sets, still fail.

That's just like the CFL draft. High ranked prospects still tank and lower picks succeed.

One of the Lions executive was on local TV was justifying losing 2 picks in order to get Rourke and Betts.

I don't think anyone can deny getting 2 starting Canadians, especially their QB was a bad thing.

Whether he was correct or incorrect he suggested about 70% of top Canadian draft picks, still fail. I found that interesting.

Just look at our 2024 draft choices. Only Clercius ended up as a starter so far. The others may develop into starters or be career back ups. A few may not even be with the team by the end of TC.

I'm not suggesting we draft poorly, just that it is a crap shoot. Sometimes you strike gold and some times it doesn't work out.  Every team has the same issue.

Import players come from a larger pool but the issues are the same. We some players we get really excited about in early days and they end up as those cut 1st.

Getting 1 starter per draft in the first year is awesome.  We probably have 2, with Wallace.
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

The new rule creates a slight problem with roster size exemptions for Canadians returning to college for their last year.

Bombers have Gassama, Leroux and the 2 OL that are likely to be coming to TC.

We also gained an additional pick in the 2nd round. 2025 might be been the off season we signed the most free agent Canadians ( 4 ).

Although we also lost a few off the roster, it does seem we're going to have a bunch fighting for spots. That's 8 in those 2 groups. Then we have 9 draft choices.

As always, I wonder if we trade some volume to trade up a bit in the 1st 2 rounds.

It affects a couple of other players, Kornelson and Bret MacDougall who would be attending his 3rd Bomber TC if invited back.

I'm  not sure if MacDougall is returning but Kornelson is on the roster now. That potentially increases the players that need to be counted in TC roster size but another 1 or 2.

I don't know how they accommodate this change but it could mean quick decisions about cuts earlier to stay within the limits.

What happened to former Bison Cole Adamson, wonder if he's still in their plans.

I wonder if he has a Criminal Mind for stealing completions from RECs.  Or maybe he's a Strange Animal with his uncanny nose for the ball.

I don't think he's coming back either. He was drafted in 2022.
