The biggest news is that the Bombers kept American RB Quinton Cooley and he accepted a practice roster spot.

Perhaps surprise releases:
RECs Myron Mitchell, Jaylen Hall
DB Isaiah Avery (big plays on Friday)
P James Evans (Global & they have 2 Global practice roster spots open)

By my count the Bombers have 51 players left on the active roster (4 are already on injured list).
So, there are 6 or 7 roster moves to be made before the opener (injured list, suspended list, healthy scratch)

RECOUNT: Make that 52 players left on the Bombers active roster. That makes 7 or 8 moves in advance of the opener.

Game day roster can be 44 or 45. The 45th spot can be a Canadian or a Global.

Rookies to make the team:

DBs Cam Allen, Trey Vaval, Jaylen Smith, Ethan Ball
LB Connor Shay, Lane Novak
DT Collin Kornelson
WR Joey Corcoran
RBs Quinton Cooley, Matthew Peterson

Must add QB Chase Artopoeus to the list. Hopefully he's okay after taking a big hit in Friday's game.

And first-year Bombers via free agency:

DE James Vaughters
LB Jonathan Jones
REC Jerreth Sterns
REC Dillon Mitchell
REC Reggie White Jr.
REC Gavin Cobb

RB Peyton Logan (1), DBs Enock Makonzo (6) & Josh Hagerty (1) are on the injured list

And the Bombers active roster contains 24 non-QB Americans. That means 4 need to go to various lists (practice, injured, etc).

Teams are allowed a max of 19 Americans on the game-day roster and 1 Nationalized American (so 20 in total)

Need to Know - Bye Week #1
June 4, 2025   Ed Tait

More notes and quotes after Wednesday's bye week practice in this week's Need to Know...

TO-DO: Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea on what he wanted the coaches and squad to get done during the bye week:

"Not short-change it. The idea that we just want to get to a game and get it played — we've got lots of time and lots of work left to be done. So, what we really want to do is not short-change the time we have and be so fired up about getting to the game that we miss these opportunities to get better and we've got a lot to work to get better."

And asked what he liked about the team after the cut-down on Saturday, he added:

"A lot of good football players. We watched the tape again and we realized we released a lot of good football players, too. I like our group, and I like some of the pieces we've added in terms of their experience, their football IQ, their desire to go play good football. I like the attitude we're carrying in and out of practice."

FYI: Limited or not practising on Wednesday were: OL Stanley Bryant and Eric Lofton, RB Brady Oliveira, QB Chris Streveler, DBs Josh Hagerty, Ethan Ball and Jake Kelly, LB Shayne Gauthier and RB/KR Peyton Logan.

Mitchell: "I'm definitely having way more fun being out here."
June 5, 2025   ED Tait

THE GRIND:
Blue Bombers fans know how last year started — an 0-4 start that became 2-6 before the club won nine of its last 10, finished first in the West Division for a fourth straight season and appeared in a fifth consecutive Grey Cup. Changes to this year's training camp approach has seen unfold as more of a grind — by design.

"We tried to keep that pedal down pretty hard because — not really able to pinpoint exactly everything about last year and not really wanting to revisit it at all," said O'Shea. "I just thought this is the way we had to do it and we had to do it differently, for sure, because we certainly want to start differently."

Asked if that will result in a better start, O'Shea shrugged and added:

"We've still got to play the games. I'm always confident. I think we've got a good football team, and they believe that, too, so as long as we go out and put into practice what we've done in training camp and play the the way we're supposed to play and do those things, we should have a good start. What that equates to, I don't know, but we should have a good start and be pleased with it.

"... I like our team. I like where we're at. I thought we had good depth in training camp, too, and a lot of difficult choices to make which everybody wants. We maybe say that every year, but this is another year, and I thought we had a lot of good depth in camp."

FYI:
RB Brady Oliveira, WR Kody Case, OL Stanley Bryant were all back at practice on Thursday after playing the spectators on Wednesday... Not practising were DBs Josh Hagerty, Ethan Ball, RB/KR Peyton Logan, OL Eric Lofton... Gabe Wallace continues to get a lot of work at left guard... O'Shea on practising during the bye week as the CFL regular season opens Thursday night: "These last two days have really been all about us. We don't really have the film to use — we'll see how (the B.C. Lions, next week's opponent) play Saturday night, late, and we'll get to that. These last two days have been excellent. I told the guys that after, 'If we could practice like that every single day — which we can't — I'd really enjoy it.' There's more fundamental work to do. These were good days to get out and run around and put in some thoughts that we want to carry through the season and dial up a bunch of special teams stuff that we didn't do through camp. This was the design of it, that we would use these two days for this purpose, and I think it's served us well."

Blue Bombers Milestone Tracker
June 8, 2025   Ed Tait

Just the other day Brady Oliveira spoke to a group of media and during the conversation touched on a number of topics, from attending the funeral last week of his high school coach and mentor Stu Nixon, to the Grey Cup being in Winnipeg, to answering this question:

How does a guy who won his second consecutive rushing title, his second consecutive Most Outstanding Canadian award and was honoured for the first time as the Canadian Football League's Most Outstanding Player top last season?

"I just keep thinking about a Grey Cup," said Oliveira. "When you ask me that question my mind instantly went to that last game in Vancouver. So how do I top last season? It's finishing it this year. Finishing it in the Grey Cup the last game of the season.

"Making sure we all come out here and handle business."

That's the politically correct, perfect team-first answer. And it also says everything about where Oliveira's head is at a few days ahead of Thursday's season opener at Princess Auto Stadium against Buck Pierce and the 1-0 B.C. Lions.

The answer also sent yours truly tumbling down a rabbit hole, especially with the Blue Bombers on a Week 1 bye and playing the spectators while the rest of the CFL was busy. And what we discovered is that while Oliveira is focussed on a Grey Cup, he's also moving into some elite company, both at a league level and among the legends of the Blue Bombers.

So, what follows is what we found at the bottom of the rabbit hole as we look at the numbers current Blue Bombers are chasing...

7 UPCOMING MILESTONES...

189
Oliveira needs just 189 yards rushing to move past Fred Reid into seventh place on the Blue Bombers all-time rushing list; Reid is at 4,505; Oliveira begins 2025 at 4,317. Andrew Harris, his mentor and predecessor, sits at 5,402 in sixth place.

Oliveira is also chasing a fourth consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. The only other Blue Bomber running back to post more than three consecutive 1K seasons is Charles Roberts, who had a run of six straight from 2002-07.

200

The next touchdown pass Zach Collaros throws will be his 110th as a Blue Bomber and 200th in his CFL career. Worth noting: only 13 other QBs in CFL history have thrown for 200 or more TDs in their careers, with 11 of them in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

That list: Anthony Calvillo (455), Damon Allen (394), Henry Burris (373), Ron Lancaster (333), Ricky Ray (324), Matt Dunigan (303), Kevin Glenn (293), Tracy Ham (284), Doug Flutie (270), Danny McManus (259), Tom Clements (252), Bo Levi Mitchell (226) and Dieter Brock (210). Of that list, only Glenn and Mitchell — the latter the starting QB in Hamilton — are not in the CFHOF.

One more on Collaros, who won't be in action until the Blue Bombers second game: his next win will be his 50th as a Winnipeg QB. Only Kenny Ploen (82) and Dieter Brock (71) had more W's as a starter.

441
With 441 more receiving yards Nic Demski will hit the 5,000-yard mark as a Blue Bomber (he's currently at 5,284, including his first three seasons in Saskatchewan. The 5K mark in Winnipeg is significant because only nine other Blue Bombers have hit that mark.

That list: Milt Stegall (15,153), James Murphy (9,036), Joe Poplawski (8,341), Terrence Edwards (7,200), Rick House (6,266), Perry Tuttle (5,817), Ernie Pitts (5,525), Clarence Denmark (5,478), and Jeff Boyd (5,110).

43

Willie Jefferson has 43 sacks as a Blue Bomber, the fifth-highest total in franchise history behind Tyrone Jones (98), Tony Norman (59), Doug Brown (52) and Gavin Walls and Elfrid Payton (47). He has 74 career sacks, including his days with Edmonton and Saskatchewan.

Jefferson also has 78 pass knockdowns, a stat the CFL has tracked since 1994. That ranks fourth all time behind Eddie Davis (111), Adrion Smith (90) and Shannon Garrett (79) and is an exceptional number for a defensive end.

The big man shows no signs of fading — he was a CFL All Star last season — and could become the first player in league history to reach 100 sacks, 100 knockdowns.

205
Jake Thomas has suited up for 205 regular season games, all as a Blue Bomber. That total ranks fifth all-time in Winnipeg history behind Bob Cameron (394), Troy Westwood (293), Chris Walby (249) and Stan Mikawos (220).

Stanley Bryant, FYI, is at 220 games played including his days in Calgary with 154 as a Blue Bomber.

71

One for the foot soldiers... Shayne Gauthier and Nick Hallett both have 71 career special teams tackles, all as members of the Blue Bombers. Their next special-teams tackles will tie them with Shawn Gallant for ninth spot on the club's all-time list behind Wade Miller (184), Brendan Rogers (124), Mike Miller (110, who holds the CFL record for career tackles on specials with 226), Neil McKinlay (92), Pierre-Luc Labbé (84), Jesse Briggs (78), Wayne Weathers (75) and Doug Hocking (72).

455
Sergio Castillo has 455 points in his three stints with the Blue Bombers (2015, 2021, 2023-). With eight more points he'll move past Justin Palardy into eighth place all-time and behind Troy Westwood (2,748), Trevor Kennerd (1,840), Milt Stegall (890), Justin Medlock (802), Bernie Ruoff (673), Gerry James (601) and Charles Roberts (474).

Castillo and Palardy both have 114 career field goals in Winnipeg, tied for fifth most behind Westwood (617), Kennerd (394), Medlock (195) and Ruoff (148).

Need to Know - Home Opener Week
June 9, 2025   Ed Tait

More notes and quotes from the Blue Bombers practice day in this week's NEED TO KNOW...

QUOTABLE:
Here's Jackson when asked why he opted to come to the Blue Bombers after he was caught up in the purge in Edmonton after last season — despite going 7-6 as an interim head coach after the team went 0-5 before the change and seeing the Elks finish first in points scored and rushing per game and second in net offence:

"Just the opportunity. What Osh has built here... I can remember playing back in B.C. back in the day and almost have an opportunity to come over here and play, and it just didn't work out. You watch back in the day when Osh was three, four years in (to his job here) ...  he's getting booed, we don't know if he's going be here or not, and look where he is now, right?

"He's almost built himself up in this organization kind of like Wally Buono with the B.C. Lions, in my opinion. So, why not? I wanted the opportunity to come work with a guy like that."

48-Hour Primer - Game 1 vs. B.C. Lions
June 10, 2025   Ed Tait

FYI: The Blue Bombers held their final full practice Tuesday behind closed doors before Wednesday's walk-through. Of note, courtesy the daily injury report: right guard Pat Neufeld did not practice today after a collision with Chris Streveler late in Monday's session.

Should he not be able to go, Gabe Wallace or Tui Eli would likely be his replacement.

FYI: We'll get an idea of who will return kicks in Thursday's game against the Lions when the depth chart comes out. Here's what head coach Mike O'Shea said about rookie defensive back Trey Vaval, who handled a bunch of returns in the two preseason games:

"He seems very willing. Sometimes when you have that defender that's the kick returner they tend to be a little more direct, let's say, in how they approach it. He wants to hit things, he wants to go now. He's got a different than some offensive guys, necessarily. I've been on teams where we had a DB as the returner and there's a little difference out there sometimes.

"... He punches above his weight class. He's fast. He's good. He seems to have good vision, too. I like what he can do. He's scored touchdowns in college.",

Game Day HQ  #1 — Blue Bombers vs. Lions
June 12, 2025   Ed Tait

It's opening night for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and while so many on this revamped 2025 roster — whether they be a giddy rookie playing his first game or the grizzled vet greying at the temples — bring that pure excitement and unbridled enthusiasm, it's also a room full of varying perspectives.

There is starting quarterback Chris Streveler — stepping in for the suspended Zach Collaros tonight against the B.C. Lions — and his appreciation for life and the game after blowing out his knee last September and becoming a father in the offseason.

There is star running back Brady Oliveira — the reigning Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Player, rushing champ and two-time top Canadian — and his relentless pursuit of greatness.

There are players like Jaylen Smith and Marquise Bridges, who will have family in the house after they make the trek from Hamilton and Minneapolis, respectively.

And then there is rookie Joey Corcoran, who is still in awe of the simple things like seeing his name on the back of a Blue Bombers jersey.

NEW/OLD BLUE BOMBERS
The Blue Bombers opening night roster features a ton of new faces as 15 players that took the field in last year's Grey Cup are gone in receivers Kenny Lawler, Drew Wolitarsky and Pokey Wilson, defensive linemen TyJuan Garbutt, Celesin Haba, Miles Fox and Kyle Samson, linebacker Max Charbonneau, defensive backs Tyrell Ford, Brandon Alexander and Nick Taylor, running backs Johnny Augustine and Bailey Feltmate, offensive lineman Liam Dobson and quarterback Jake Dolegala.

Also gone from the injured list or practice roster are linebackers Adam Bighill, Brian Cole and Bryce Notree, defensive linemen Owen Hubert and Lucky Ogbevoen, defensive backs Souleymane Karamoko and Noah Hallett, receivers Myron Mitchell and Jeremy Murphy and O-lineman Chris Walker.

New to the team and on the active roster tonight are Vaughters, defensive back Trey Vaval, receiver Jerreth Sterns, quarterback, running back Matthew Petterson and four members of the 2025 CFL Draft class in linebackers Connor Shay, Jaylen Smith and Lane Novak, and Corcoran, the receiver mentioned above.

Game 1:

Derek Taylor @DTonOB  Jun 11
Wow, so much to discuss here:
Rookie Trey Vaval as the returner over Dillon Mitchell. Multiple FA pickups are healthy scratches (D. Mitchell, J. Jones).
RT Eric Lofton to 6-game.

Neufeld as game-time decision...curious if Vibert would debut if Neufeld is out.

They list Michael Ayers at defensive end. Curious how that plays out. Other than that the Bombers have only 6 DL for this one.

Bob Irving  @BobIrvingCJOB  Jun 11
Blue Bombers season opening roster vs BC Thurs. features Jerreth Sterns beating out Dillon Mitchell for a starting receiver spot(Mitchell is on 1-game inj); 3 Americans on the O-line, Jamal Parker & Marquise Bridges as new starters in the secondary & Trey Vaval as kick returner.

Ed Tait   @EdTaitWFC   Jun 11
The @Wpg_BlueBombers depth chart for the season opener. Jonathan Jones, Peyton Logan, Dillon Mitchell, Tanner Schmekel, Fabian Weitz and Jamal Woods all on one-game injured. Jake Kelly, Eric Lofton and Enock Makonzo on six-game injured list.

The @Wpg_BlueBombers will start three Americans on the OL. Jerreth Sterns starts at receiver, Pat Neufeld is a game-time decision and Trey Vaval will handle the kick return duties

Winnipeg Blue Bombers scratch Dillon Mitchell for season-opener against B.C. Lions
By 3Down Staff -June 11, 2025

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have set their roster for Thursday's matchup against the B.C. Lions and it doesn't include veteran receiver Dillon Mitchell.

The 28-year-old, who caught 130 passes for 1,896 yards and 12 touchdowns over three seasons in Edmonton, has been moved to the one-game injured list as a healthy scratch. Keric Wheatfall, who caught two touchdown passes during the preseason, will start at boundary wide receiver as part of a receiving corps that also includes Dalton Schoen, Nic Demski, Jerreth Sterns, and Kevens Clercius.

Two-time CFL M.O.P. quarterback Zach Collaros will not play against the Lions due to a one-game suspension he received just prior to training camp, leaving Chris Streveler in the No. 1 role. The 30-year-old, who went 1-0 as a starter in 2024, will be backed up under centre by second-year passer Terry Wilson and rookie Chase Artopoeus.

Veteran offensive lineman Patrick Neufeld has been listed as a game-time decision at right guard, while Kendall Randolph will start at right tackle in place of an injured Eric Lofton. Micah Vanterpool will start at left guard, giving the Blue Bombers three American starters along the offensive line.

On the defensive line, Devin Adams will start at defensive tackle alongside Jake Thomas. Jamal Woods, who started 14 games last year, has been placed on the one-game injured list as a healthy scratch. The starting defensive ends will be veterans Willie Jefferson and James Vaughters.

Winnipeg's starting linebackers have remained the same from last year, though top CFL draft picks Connor Shay and Jaylen Smith were added to improve the unit's depth.

Jamal Parker will start at safety, a spot that was vacated by veteran Brandon Alexander, while Marquise Bridges has won the starting job at field-side cornerback. Trey Vaval, his backup, will handle return duties.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-0) will host the B.C. Lions (1-0) at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday, June 12 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.

B.C. Lions make two roster changes ahead of matchup with Winnipeg Blue Bombers
By 3Down Staff -June 11, 2025

The B.C. Lions have kept their roster relatively consistent for Thursday night's game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

All 24 starters are being carried over from last week when the Lions knocked off the visiting Edmonton Elks by a score of 31-14. Nathan Rourke threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns in the win, two of which went to second-year receiver Stanley Berryhill III.

Canadian offensive lineman Tyler Packer is dressing in a depth role after missing the season-opener due to a shoulder injury, while American linebacker Devin Richardson has been promoted from the practice roster. B.C. will once again start four American offensive linemen, only this time there will be two Canadian backups.

American linebacker Jeremy Lewis has come off the roster, as has Canadian linebacker Deshawn Stevens. Neither player practiced this week due to injury and both have been moved to the one-game injured list.

Players who remain out for the Lions include Canadian linebacker Adam Auclair (shoulder), Canadian offensive lineman David Foucault (leg), and American linebacker Josh Woods (knee). Auclair and Woods are on the one-game injured list, while Foucault is on the six-game injured list.

The Lions went 1-2 against Winnipeg in 2024, splitting the two meetings at Princess Auto Stadium.

The B.C. Lions (1-0) will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-0) on Thursday, June 12 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Upon Further Review  Game 1 — Wpg 34 BC 20
June 13, 2025   Ed Tait

NO NEWS IS... NO NEWS: O'Shea had no update on Oliveira after the game and it's likely the club won't have an official update until the injury report comes out after practice on Monday. Still, replays show that on Oliveira's second run — a 43-yard dash on the sideline — he was brought down from behind by Garry Peters, landing on his left shoulder. On the next play, a Chris Streveler TD toss to Nic Demski, Oliveira is in pass protection and then exited the game.

SHOUT OUT TO... veteran linebacker Shayne Gauthier, who was the rushed into service as the emergency long-snapper after Mike Benson exited the game with an injury. FYI, if Benson is out long-term the club may look to bring back Ian Leroux, who was in camp and drafted specifically for his skills in that department.

Blue Bombers transactions – June 16

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the following transactions:

Added to practice roster:

National long snapper Ian Leroux (6-1, 225, Laval)

Released from practice roster:

American receiver Reggie White Jr.

Derek Taylor  @DTonOB  Jun 16
Bombers announce they've signed long snapper Ian Leroux (4th-round pick in 2024, released after camp).
Veteran LS Mike Benson was injured in Thursday's game.

To sign Leroux the Bombers released REC Reggie White from the practice roster.

From the CFL transaction wire: the Bombers have moved P Jamieson Sheahan to the practice roster.

I'm guessing this is a way to buy time before releasing/injured listing someone.
Sheahan is the 12th on the PR and you can only have 12 if two are Global players.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers release CFL veteran Reggie White Jr., sign one
By 3Down Staff -June 16, 2025

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released veteran receiver Reggie White Jr.

The six-foot-one, 208-pound target signed with the team this offseason and made the practice roster after training camp.

In 2024, the native of Randallstown, Md. played 12 games with the Montreal Alouettes, recording 24 catches for 355 yards and four touchdowns.

The 29-year-old first joined the Alouettes in 2021 following a stint with the New York Giants. He has made 95 receptions for 1,254 yards and eight touchdowns over 32 career regular-season CFL games but missed the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury he suffered in October 2022.

Collegiately, White Jr. played at Monmouth University, which is located in West Long Branch, N.J. He made 249 catches for 3,373 yards and 31 touchdowns over 45 career games and was named first team All-Big South in 2018.

The Blue Bombers have also signed Canadian long snapper Ian Leroux.

The six-foot-one, 225-pound native of Quebec City, Que., was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft out of Laval University. He attended training camp with the team before returning to the Rouge et Or for his final year of collegiate eligibility where he won his second Vanier Cup. He made 14 tackles and one interception over 41 collegiate games.

Leroux attended training camp with Winnipeg again in 2025 but was released as part of final cuts. His re-addition comes after veteran Mike Benson left the team's season-opening win over B.C. due to injury.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-0) will visit the B.C. Lions (1-1) on Saturday, June 21 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
