QB Jake Maier to start Stampeders' regular-season finale
By 3Down Staff -October 25, 2024

The Calgary Stampeders are going back to quarterback Jake Maier for the CFL regular-season finale.

The 27-year-old pivot will be given the start after backup Matthew Shiltz was ruled out with a neck injury. Shiltz started the last two games after Maier was benched, throwing for 438 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. There was hope that high-profile signee P.J. Walker would play in the final game of the year, but the former NFL backup declined to be elevated from the practice roster in order to keep his options open to return south of the border.

Maier has started 14 games this year and is the only opening-day quarterback to have not missed time with an injury. He completed 338-of-468 pass attempts for 3,548 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions before being stripped of the job.

The Fullerton, Cal. native first joined the Stampeders in 2021 and took over the starting job from Bo Levi Mitchell halfway through the next season. In 58 games, he has thrown for 11,392 yards, 57 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions. Maier's contract is set to expire this year.

Logan Bonner, who made one start in place of Maier this year, will dress due to Shiltz's absence and could see reps. He threw for 284 yards and five interceptions in his debut against Edmonton.

The only other change to Calgary's roster is the return of running back and returner Peyton Logan, who has rushed for 335 yards and one touchdown on 57 carries this year while also catching 23 passes for 121 yards and scoring one punt return major. Fellow ball carrier Kylin Hill will be a healthy scratch.

The Stampeders (4-12-1) will visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-7-1) for the CFL regular-season finale on Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Top DE Malik Carney returns for Riders' season finale
By 3Down Staff -October 25, 2024

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will have a key pass rusher back in the lineup for their potentially pivotal regular-season finale against the Calgary Stampeders.

Defensive end Malik Carney returns to his starting position after a five-game absence due to an ankle injury. In 12 games this season, the 29-year-old has recorded 26 defensive tackles, four sacks, and one forced fumble. Despite those relatively humble stats, he is the highest-graded edge defender in the league according to Pro Football Focus, generating 46 pressures and boasting a pass rush win rate of 17.8 percent.

Unfortunately, Carney's return will be balanced out by the loss of veteran defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II, who will be a healthy scratch. The 31-year-old has recorded 10 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in 10 games and will be replaced by Miles Brown at defensive tackle.

Also sitting out this week is cornerback Deontai Williams, who has been demoted to the practice roster despite making 12 starts this year. Versatile DB Amari Henderson will play in his stead. Canadian defensive back Kosi Onyeka and linebacker Zach Philion have also been moved to the practice roster, with linebacker Jordan Herdman-Reed and receiver Colton Hunchak dressing.

The Riders will not know until shortly before kickoff whether this game will matter for the standings, as a Winnipeg victory in the first game of the Saturday double-header would erase any hope of a first-place finish. As a result, star defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr., running back A.J. Ouellette, Canadian receivers Samuel Emilus and Colton Hunchak, and American receiver KeeSean Johnson are all listed as game-time decisions.

Saskatchewan (9-7-1) will host the Calgary Stampeders (4-12-1) in the final game of the 2024 CFL regular season at 7:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 26.

Roster changes;

Add to roster:
Quarterback Logan Bonner
Running back Peyton Logan

Remove from roster:
Quarterback Matthew Shiltz (to 1-game)
Running back Kylin Hill (to 1-game)

Roster Analysis: Quarterback Matthew Shiltz is out with a stinger/neck injury after a hit in the Hamilton game.  That means Jake Maier moves to the starting quarterback slot and Logan Bonner is added to the roster.  Also, Peyton Logan returns to the roster.  Minimal changes.

Looks like the Riders will rest some starters if the Bombers win tomorrow.

Haha, is that legal?  Labeling 5 players as GTD?  When none have any signs of injury during the week?  Then at the last minute they'll swap in PR guys if they don't need to win?

If SSK fields their strongest roster and CGY shows up with that shambles, our WDF hopes are doomed.  We MUST win vs MTL.  MUST MUST MUST

I think it's become an acceptable practice since the league did away with the 4man reserve. (Used to declare 4 scratched players 1 hour before game time).

I guess it's something the Riders can take advantage of since they are playing at home and all their players are available.
