QB Jake Dolegala to make first start as B.C. Lion vs. Elks
By 3Down Staff -August 10, 2024

Jake Dolegala will make his first start at quarterback for the B.C. Lions on Sunday.

The six-foot-seven, 242-pound passer joined the Lions in free agency this offseason after starting nine games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2023. He completed 64.8 percent of his pass attempts for 2,641 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, going 2-7 as a starter after supplanting Mason Fine following a season-ending leg injury to Trevor Harris.

Dolegala will take over under centre after Vernon Adams Jr. went down with a right knee injury in their Week 9 loss to Winnipeg. The 32-year-old is expected to be out 'week-to-week' but remains on the active roster as the third quarterback to comply with CFL rules. He has completed 167-of-259 passes for 2,469 yards, 14 touchdowns, and six interceptions in eight games, adding 167 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

Defensively, the Lions will have a couple of notable names back in the lineup, including defensive back Emmanuel Rugamba. After compiling 23 defensive tackles in six games at boundary halfback, the third-year pro will return to the strong-side linebacker spot he held in 2023 and bump Canadian Patrice Rene to a backup role.

Global defensive tackle Tibo Debaillie is also back in action after a chest injury, as Canadian Nathan Cherry (undisclosed) returns to the six-game injured list after just one week of live action. Rookie American defensive end Julian Falaniko will dress as a replacement for Amir Siddiqi (knee), who also heads to the six-game. Linebacker Jackson Taylor has been demoted to the practice squad.

Canadian receiver Jevon Cottoy makes his own return on the offensive side of the ball but will not get the start, listed behind American Ayden Eberhardt on the depth chart. Fellow CJFL product Kieran Poissant goes back to the practice roster as a result.

Elks lose all their fullbacks to six-game injured list
By 3Down Staff -August 10, 2024

The Edmonton Elks will be without a single body at one of football's most unheralded positions on Sunday.

Both of Edmonton's fullbacks, Tanner Green (ankle) and Jacob Plamondon (elbow), went down in their Week 9 win over Saskatchewan and have since been added to the six-game injured list. The team was left without a replacement and will be unable to dress one this week.

The Elks will add a seventh offensive lineman to the mix in Hunter Steward in order to help fill the blocking role on offence, while rookie receiver Zach Mathis will make his CFL debut after being acquired in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick in the supplemental draft. Global linebacker Les Maruo will step in to plug a gap on special team with Canadian Josiah Schakel (groin) also going on the six-game.

Defensively, edge rusher Romeo McKnight (ankle) will sit out this week, having recorded seven tackles and two sacks in six games. Noah Taylor will get the start at defensive end, while defensive tackle DeMarcus Christmas will make his debut as an Elk in a rotational role.

I'm not surprised Maruo was picked up.  Nor Christmas.  Two quality and cheap guys.  Either one was a bubble option here.

I hope they know Maruo can take a few snaps on D.

Huge significance for the Bombers if the Elks can pull off the victory. We need losses by BC, Sask, and Calgary to hold those teams back while we catch up.

This weekend, our bye week, Ottawa almost beat Sask getting a tie, the Argos did beat Calgary, and now we'd like the Elks to beat the Lions.

The Elks need this win even more than we do so they should be sufficiently motivated. We showed them the blueprint to follow by beating BC 25-0 in our last game. The Elks also got a break when BC's starting QB tweaked a knee and will miss the game.

We can help our own fortunes next week when we play the Lions again. Just win, baby!

I'm not sold on EDM's 4 NAT OL.  I think BC's D will step up to help their weak QB.  If anyone can quickly solve Ford, it's Campbell.  No sense having all those great deep shot Rs if Ford can't throw deep.

Cottoy back, but not starting.

The game might come down to whether Leake can have another near-200Y game or not.

BC winning would help them more readily accept losing to us the next week.  If they lose 2 in a row they'll start going into panic mode vs us.

Since VAJ is still dressing... what is the chance he comes in if Dolegala stinks up the joint early?  Would make a great surprise.

I thought VA was the #3 this week and likely not dressing? I believe #2 is Chase Brice.

If the Elks can lay a blanket over the BC offense like we did, oh yeah, the panic will be in full bloom by the time they play us. I'm hoping for a big game from the Elks D.

He's not dressing is he? Just listed to fill out the roster. BC did sign a PR QB this week which to me means several weeks with no VAJ.

GO ELKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read a while ago, that the game sold out in an hour, and more seats might be added.

@ 1 - 7 on the season the Elks are fighting for their jobs and any hope of a playoff game. If they lose today they will have the worst win / loss in the CFL and I'd expect more big changes. This includes coaches going into 2025.

I wonder how the sale of Elks is preceding and what influence that may have on many issues.

Sort of lost track on this game being played in Victoria. What stadium is in Victoria and what is the seating capacity? I must admit I never knew there was a large enough venu in Victoria for a CFL game.
