Streveler

Are we misusing Streveler.
a) we put him in as a receiver with no intention of throwing to him
B) any time he's in at qb we put him in a position to get hit hard
c) we don't trust him to throw a pass on second and short and inches
d) when we bring him in for a first down its basically fake to olivera or Demski and run up the middle. (again do we not trust his passing?)
Lately hes by far running off to the sides on short yardage, having missed one in each of the last two games, you wonder if hes hurting

Sir Blue and Gold

Buck's cutsy "look how creative I am" formations with the both of them have done nothing so far.

That said, I don't think we're misusing him. He's a good short yardage guy who also came in and got us one of our three wins as a starter.

That's pretty on brand for a backup QB in the CFL.

TecnoGenius

We did throw to him once on a fake-sweep pass (IIRC) and he dropsied it.  That may have put him in the doghouse in terms of future pass attempts.

I liked the game Strev started where it was about 50/50 whether it was Strev or Brady running.  That was a good use of Strev.  He has to hand it off 50% of the time or Ds will just key on Strev.

As for SY, Strev was never as good as Prukop or Feve.  Junkie helped with the stats before.  I can't recall what Strev was at but it was somewhere around 85-90% I think, whereas the other 2 guys were closer to 100% (I still dispute the pure straight-sneak stat Junkie gave for Prukop).

My point is since we can't enjoy 100% on SY, we need to make up for it by using Strev to get the explosion sometimes... so we need him to pass once in a while, take the edge around sometimes, hand off to unexpected players sometimes, and other crazy plays.  Not only will it even out what he succeeds at vs the failures, but it will also loosen up Ds from the box so his sneaks should be more successful.
Never go full Rider!

thats my point we are using him as a short yardage qb, but hes our number 2, we need to utilize him more than just fake handoffs and short runs (as techno pointed out)

I feel like short runs is kinda the role. But if there's more there, what kind of more do you suggest?

Pete

Give him more free rein, fake the run around, draw in the dbs and throw the pass...he did it very successfully in one game but it was called back due to holding penalty.
When he goes in on first  throw the quick out as lbs tend to focus on him running down the middle.
Giving him more passing downs will also give him more practice reading cfl defenses when we do him to go in

None issue handled internally

In his previous run with us, he'd make the SY play and then the offence would go into hurry-up to take advantage of the personnel mismatches (The defense obviously having their heavy set on the field).

Or faking the sneak on occasion and lob a pass up.

One day, a team will take advantage of the 2-QBs allowed on the field rule and do something cool.

These are things we did with Prukop. These are things we did with Strev the first time he was here. Haven't done it at all this season despite our offence struggling more than they ever have. It doesn't make much sense to me.
My wife is amazing!

Half the season gone and Strev. has been about half as effective as I expected he would be when he signed.  Don't know what this means for his future with the club, I'm sure he wants more opportunity to pass the ball, but he's not getting the chance so far.  Best case scenario for him is if Zach goes down for 3-4 games and he gets to showcase what he can do.  He's getting pretty close to now or never, also, we'll never get a look at Wilson with Strev. blocking his way.

Look, I love strevs attitude and what he brings.
When Collaros gets significantly injured for a long period of time, the club may bring in somebody.

bustamente

He might have a nagging injury but he is just not getting the playing time I thought he would get when he signed to come back

Pete

It would also help if he didnt go out of his way to initiate contact. Taking on linebackers head on all the time is a recipe for injury. Also it gives the lineman a chance from behind to roll up on him
Hes most successful when he runs around the end and forced a db to try to take him down
Saying that we aren't paying him to be just a short ydge guy,so why use him as such

Yep, he's still trying to play like he did 5 years ago, as tough as he is his body won't put up with the punishment for long.  He really hasn't had any significant runs of distance this season, so I question his effectiveness as a change of pace QB. I don't see any teams desperate enough to offer him the keys to the car next season, he's in danger of becoming another Dakota Prukop.

Its called the rope a dope

Set other teams up by never using him properly, and then BOOM, set him loose...

Or maybe not.
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

The Zipp

I am not convinced our offensive players are practiced and focused enough for too many wrinkles with Strev at this point.  Re-watched the game from Thursday and our first quarter was a comedy of errors.

Later in the game we didn't even know how to line up properly in a basic formation.

High performing offences can add wrinkles - we are basic vanilla getting rid of the ball quickly cause our o-line is still not where it needs to be.

Zach is our best bet to throw the ball - Strev is our best bet to sneak it.

Perhaps second half of the season will see some creative plays once we get out of elementary school and start executing basic plays and scoring TD's
