Ford and McGhee got beat up a bit but they will come around

Quote from: CrazyCanuck89 on June 01, 2024, 12:29:50 PMI'm confused why you think Tyrell Ford is a possible keeper.  The guy will be starting at Field Cornerback.

I was just trying to go over the whole depth chart and put guys into either cut / keep columns.  (Omitting them completely means I didn't really notice them.)

I wanted to make sure it was clear NAT Ford was a keeper.  In fact, he was basically the sole anomaly of being a guaranteed starter on that depth chart (outside of the kickers and some OL).

Quote from: Mike on June 01, 2024, 03:02:46 PMHe was very obviously beat and beat badly. Tracked the ball horribly, stopped running for a moment while the ball was in flight ... that and a couple other plays ... yikes, he's an easy cut for me

Ya, but that was one play, and he made up for it the rest of the game by being in the hip pocket of his guy.  Either the DC called for the wrong coverage on that bust, or he made the wrong guess.  It happens.  He'll learn.  Every DB is allowed a whiff.

DT on CJOB post-game said McGhee is almost certainly going to start week 1, especially with the supposed injury to Parker.  I think McGhee could easily be a Parker-level player eventually.  If he's going to be our next-man-up backup for the DB corps, he'll probably get a hefty 4-10 games of starting this season.

Quote from: Horseman on June 01, 2024, 03:19:08 PMI liked the work of Cal back up QB's particularly Bonner, if he gets released we should pick him up.

Bonner looked amazing.  I have no idea who this guy is or how long he's been with them, but he made our rookie QBs look awful.  In fact, Bonner was almost looking better than Maier... Could be a short leash early in the season!

He was cut and didn't even make the PR.

You needed to bump that post just to show I was wrong?  ???
I did also say that he may be cut, I just didn't think he played as bad as you were suggesting.

Not exactly. Usually DB's playing most of the final pre season game are TCF. When they are being targeted that's not a good sign.

I'm trying to figure out what you were seeing that made you feel he wasn't playing that badly.

We cut 10 of the DB's that were playing against Calgary.  It was clear that there was going to be a significant trimming of the bodies at DB.

Roughly 38 players that played were released. A few went to PR.

I really have no investment in this player and won't lose any sleep that he is gone.
I just find it pretty petty of you to call me out by bumping that post.
I mean I could easily do the same, but to each their own I guess.

The forum is a conversation and we had a conversation during the game. You can't be that thin skinned. Discussions like this occur all during TC and pre season games. Actually they occur during the regular season.

I gave my reasons why I thought he'd be released quickly and you disagreed. That's fine but I asked what you saw that I didn't and you didn't respond.

Opinions are based on specific observations one way or the other. You have to have some support for an opinion. If you don't you get challenged. Not all opinions work out. I thought C. Smith was a lock to be the returner for example.

Both Ford and Hackett made some good plays off the edge of the box with solid tackles in the second game but they were also beaten blatantly in pass coverage, so there was good and bad plays, both getting cut was not a huge surprise considering the limited openings.

You have to take into account the competition they are playing against as well. Lining up against a 3rd or 4th string QB and a TCF receiver and mostly getting beaten, not a good thing. A DB must be better in coverage than run support on most plays. I'd rather give up a 5 yard run than a 40 yard pass.

I get your point but this applies to all players. You have to make more good plays than bad plays against the best competition. You also have to do more than the other rookies against the same competition.

I thought Hackett had a better performance of the 2 but noted Bond and Bridges were higher performing on the day.

The last pre season game is rookies against rookies most often.

You said he had a terrible game and I disagreed.  Nothing has changed.  I'm moving on........

You can move on but you never did say what you saw that made you feel differently. That was the point of the conversation and question. You were given a fair chance several times to explain your view.

You just took your ball and went home.
