Whoop!

Great news, guessing we had some extra space with Hardrick's decision, and upped the ante.

Good signing, regardless the cost.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers agree to terms with CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian Brady Oliveira

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with all-star running back Brady Oliveira. He was scheduled to be a free agent on February 13th.

Oliveira (5-10, 222; North Dakota; born: August 15, 1997, in Winnipeg, MB) returns to the Blue Bombers for a fifth season after being originally selected by the club in the second round, 14th overall, in the 2019 CFL Draft.

In 2023, Oliveira was named the Canadian Football League's Most Outstanding Canadian Player and a runner up for the Most Outstanding Player Award while also being selected as a CFL and West Division All-Star.

He led the league in rushing with 1,534 yards – the second highest total by a Canadian in league history after Jon Cornish amassed 1,813 yards for the Calgary Stampeders in 2013 – as well as topping the league in yards from scrimmage (2,016) and touchdowns (13). Oliveira had a league-best seven 100-yard rushing games while setting career highs in rushing, receptions (38) and receiving yards (482).

Oliveira's numbers last year jumped from his 2022 season when he became the team's feature back and rushed for 1,001 yards – the first 1,000-yard season of his career. In 51 regular season games with the Blue Bombers, he has 2,970 yards rushing, 70 receptions for 808 yards and 20 total touchdowns.

Active in the community, Oliveira is passionate about his dog rescue work in Manitoba and around the world. He was the 2022 recipient of the Cal Murphy 'Heart of a Legend' Award, which 'recognizes sportsmanship and dedication to the CFL and the community.'

$200K for BO20 is the right amount.

Good signing.

I believe Oulette will be around $175K maximum by the ????????

Great news. On the negative side it probably means we lose Schoen? Interesting that we haven't heard about any offers he might have gotten elsewhere. I'd take the rumoured salary to include some playing time and goals achieved.

Sounds a little higher than I might have liked although he's worth every penny he's paid.

I wonder how much other interest he had across the CFL.

Brady or no Brady, I never expected us to re-sign Schoen. Can't invest that much into one position group.

I don't think Ouellette will get near the same amount, he has direct competition from cheaper Import RB's to deal with.  With Brady's re-signing I think the Argos likely reclaim him for around $175k.

Agree, they need to use what savings they have left to re-sign many of their core vets that won't get much attention from other teams but would be difficult to replace.

theaardvark

Schoen's value cannot be understated, for sure, and I think there will be at least 2 teams willing to make that investment, BC being at the top of that list.  They have Lucky money freed up, so there's that.

And Dunk confirms...

$230k is a bit more than I had hoped we'd land him for, $30k goes a long way in re-signing others, but its still a good deal.  Not the great deal, but a good deal.

not too sure about BC. Yes, they aren't paying Lucky (or Rhymes) but they are paying Hollins, Cottoy and Hatcher plus still are probably in the running for Betts and Hladik, neither of whom come cheap.

yeah that's a lot, but at the same time I think we should see what Ouellett gets first. As for Stanback, I would be leary. He definitely took a step back this year

Oulette is going to Sask as per Dave Naylor.  Sask is loading up!

At least BO isn't going there (though I don't think he would).

It is an overpay for Olivera, however the alternative was letting him go to BC, Argo or mtrl it might have been enough for them to overtake us. Even the riders would have been significantly better not only with his running ability, but his blocking.
It would have been great if Brady had signed for a bit less so we could sign other free agents, but the type of running back he is, who knows how long he will be effective (see Stanback).cant fault him for maximizing his prime earning years.

As mentioned we are way better off overspending on someone in his prime rather than on the tail end of career( Hardrick)

GOLDMEMBER

Whew my new $200 Brady jersey is not going to waste.

That is big bucks for a running back any running back, but he certainly has proven his worth last year!

Schoen might have priced himself off the roster regardless of what happened with Oliveria. I guess we'll see how much he gets and where.  It's still surprising he hasn't landed somewhere. OTOH he could be re-signing in Winnipeg and they announce it tomorrow.

We still have weapons if we lose Schoen.  Whereas losing Brady leave a big hole.

I think Walters will make an under the radar signing...  Maybe a Manny show or a Lucky at a deep discount... or maybe we just have to trust our scouts to have "The next one" already coming to camp.  Its not like we can't recruit and develop players.

True!  I'm interested in what happens w Bailey as well. He's kind of under the radar here.   Manny show..hmmm.

I also want Bede but that's another convo.

Yep, BC won't likely be in the running too many of their vets need to be retained, expect Schoen to get the highest offers out east. Ti-Cats, Ottawa or Mtl.

Bede already signed in Edmonton.  Bailey certainly deserves a bump as a reward for his loyalty, grinding effort and his ability to flash when needed.

more than I hoped we would pay but the markets the market and he's not only a large part of our offense but also a ratio breaker.

KINGCHARLES

2 YEAR DEAL!!!

Basically this is going to mean Brady is a Bomber for life. He will be turning 27 in August so its safe to say he's going to want to build a big legacy for himself. With what he does off the field he already has a bunch of social media attention. Kid has potential to be an all-time great Canadian RB and I'm really excited for his future

Seems a bit high for a running back and hopefully it doesn't weaken the team somewhere else.  Hopefully this isn't what impacted us being able to keep Hardrick on our O-Line.

I would assume Hardricks contract is what impacted us signing him. Unlike Bryant, who took a pay cut, Hardrick probably has not been making that much. Not much time left in his career, a young family, already having two rings all make taking the Riders offer a no-brainer. I wouldn't want the bombers to match it, even if they could

Blueforlife

A few years ago we debated who should start at RB for us as the OL and BO started off slow.  This guy has gone right to the top in short order and it's amazing we got him for 2 years.  I want him for 10!

Lincoln Locomotive

It's now apparent that Brady played his hand out perfectly and in reality to the home team discount as both BC and Hamilton offered Brady significantly more $$ than did the Bombers.  He made the statement that he is loyal to his team and is committed to the community!   My feelings early on were that he had other intentions and I was dead wrong on that count.   At the end of the day Brady managed to reset the salary boundaries for RBs in the CFL and hats off to him for this...albeit it did come with a steep price and we simply weren't able to retain some key players.

Oullette with the wrong passport is not worth anywhere near $230.  He will get the same $ that top IMP guys like Stanback, Butler, Sheets, etc have gotten over the years.  Plus inflation.

I don't think he's even that great...

Quote from: tlf on February 06, 2024, 05:41:08 PMOulette is going to Sask as per Dave Naylor.  Sask is loading up!

That's the best news yet.  We get to finally see if Oullette is the real deal in that sorry-state CFL club, or if he was just propped up by his strong TOR OL & team.  I would expect SSK to attempt to use the run more, though.

TecnoGenius

Oh ya, I'm surprised we got it done.  Assuming he didn't make the the NFL, I knew it was pretty much here or nowhere.  We always were going to get the hometown discount.  Being loved by your own hometown every time you step on IGF/PAS is worth $10's of k's.  Building a legacy is worth $10's of k's.  Being here to help win the home 2025 GC is worth $10's of k's.

So the rumor is other teams offered a lot more.  Let's say $260?  So there's your $10's of k's.

I am surprised KW went up to $230.  I would have tried to get much closer to $200, which we all thought was a fair, even high-ish, number, and then backload it with a bigger bump in 2025.  I think KW went outside his comfort zone on this one and this is going to hurt us at RT and D.

But if we think about it this way: Demski is making around the same.  One question: does Brady provide as much value (yards, points, blocking, etc) to the team as Demski?  Sure does.  So why not have them paid the same?
