FYI: Keric Wheatfall had himself a day on Monday while working with the starting offence in the spot usually held by Kenny Lawler who, by the way, watched practice while sporting a cast on his fractured right arm. "He's had a great camp," said Pierce of Wheatfall. "It's always a big jump coming up to the CFL for the first time and learning the nuances of the game. His physical tools... he's extremely gifted and you can see the confidence building with him."... RB Brady Oliveira did not practice for a second straight day, with most of his workload being handled by veteran Johnny Augustine... DB Redha Kramdi was back at his post after missing practice on Sunday.

48-HOUR PRIMER WPG AT OTT
JUNE 11, 2024  Ed Tait

THE BRADY WATCH: Blue Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea confirmed that RB Brady Oliveira did not practice on Tuesday — remember, the session was closed to the media — and when asked if that meant he would be out for Thursday's game in Ottawa or 'TBD', to be determined, he chose option #2.

"He didn't practice a lot of camp either, so..." said O'Shea. "We'll see. We have more time than just before the game. We'll look at what goes on tonight and tomorrow morning and we'll see. I'm going to ask him tonight how he's feeling, I'm going to ask him tomorrow morning and then we'll figure out what goes on from there."

Oliveira, FYI, is listed as questionable on the latest injury report:

Star RB Brady Oliveira out for Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Ottawa Redblacks
By 3Down Staff -June 12, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without star running back Brady Oliveira when they visit the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday.

The league's reigning Most Outstanding Canadian didn't practice this week due to a knee injury and was listed on the team's injury report as questionable. He carried the ball 11 times for 38 yards and caught three passes for 17 yards in the club's season-opening loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

Johnny Augustine will start in Oliveira's place. The Guelph product scored Winnipeg's only touchdown last week, producing 27 yards from scrimmage late in the fourth quarter. The 30-year-old native of Welland, Ont. has rushed for 1,150 yards and two touchdowns and made 15 receptions for 142 yards and one score over his six-year CFL career.

Adam Bighill will make his season debut after missing last week's game due to an undisclosed injury. The CFL's three-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player will start at middle linebacker, pushing Kyrie Wilson to his usual spot at weak-side linebacker.

Kenny Lawler, who was placed on the six-game injured list earlier this week, will be replaced by Keric Wheatfall at boundary wide receiver. The six-foot-two, 194-pound native of Brenham, Texas made 78 receptions for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns over three collegiate seasons at Fresno State. He has since had brief stints in the NFL and USFL.

The rest of Winnipeg's starting lineup remains unchanged from last week.

Ottawa Redblacks' top draft pick Nick Mardner to make first CFL start vs. Winnipeg
By 3Down Staff -June 12, 2024

Canadian receiver Nick Mardner didn't have to wait long to make his first career CFL start.

The six-foot-six, 208-pound target was the second overall pick in the 2024 CFL Draft and will start for the Redblacks at field-side wide receiver when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday night. He played five seasons of collegiate football at the University of Hawai'i, the University of Cincinnati, and Auburn University, catching 81 passes for 1,488 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The native of Oakville, Ont. had his best collegiate season in 2021 with the Rainbow Warriors when he made 46 catches for 913 yards and five touchdowns to be named All-Mountain West honourable mention. The rest of Ottawa's receiving corps will feature veterans Jaelon Acklin, Justin Hardy, Bralon Addison, and Dominique Rhymes.

Dru Brown
will make his first start since becoming Ottawa's starting quarterback this off-season when he was acquired via trade from the Blue Bombers. The 27-year-old native of Palo Alto, Calif. threw for 983 yards, nine touchdowns, and zero interceptions with Winnipeg last season, posting a 2-0 record as a starter.

Ryquell Armstead, a rookie out of Temple University, is listed as the starter at running back, though he's a game-time decision due to a quad injury. Devonte Williams, who ran for 1,000 yards with the team last season, is out for the year after suffering a torn Achilles while training during the off-season.

Ottawa's offensive and defensive lines remain mostly unchanged from a year ago as Dontae Bull, the first overall pick in the 2023 CFL Draft, will start at right tackle. Dariusz Bladek, who was with the Toronto Argonauts last season, will start at right guard.

Adarius Pickett, the reigning Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the East Division, will start at strong-side linebacker, while incumbents Frankie Griffin and Jovan Santos-Knox fill out the rest of the linebacker corps.

The Redblacks placed reigning East Division all-star Brandin Dandridge on the six-game injured list, leaving Money Hunter as the starter at boundary cornerback. Damon Webb, Alonzo Addae, Tobias Harris, and Deandre Lamont fill out the rest of the secondary.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the following transactions:

Added to practice roster:
American running back/returner Chris Smith (5-9, 194, Louisiana-Lafayette)
American defensive lineman Ali Fayad (6-2, 250, Western Michigan)

Transferred to six-game injured list

Bombers bring back preseason returner standout Chris Smith, one other
By 3Down Staff -June 15, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have brought back a couple of players who were injured in training camp, including returner Chris Smith.

The rookie running back was cut due to injury despite returning a punt 109 yards for a touchdown in Winnipeg's second preseason game. He has remained around the team while receiver Myron Mitchell has handled return duties in the interim.

The five-foot-nine, 194-pound speedster played five seasons at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, rushing 373 times for 2,167 yards and 16 touchdowns, catching 52 passes for 410 yards and three scores, and tossing a major on his lone pass attempt. He also returned 66 kicks for 1,556 yards and two touchdowns, earning first-team All-American honours in 2020.

The Bombers also brought back American defensive end Ali Fayad, who was released on May 12.

The six-foot-two, 250-pound defender dressed for four games with the Toronto Argonauts in 2022 and recorded four defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, and one sack. He previously played five seasons at Western Michigan University, where he was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. In 52 career games for the Broncos, he tallied 154 tackles, 51 for loss, 30 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

In a corresponding move, Winnipeg has placed defensive tackle Miles Fox and defensive end Celestin Haba on the six-game injured.

Haba started the first two games of the season, recording one tackle. He played eight games as a rookie in 2023, collecting 12 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble.

Fox joined the Bombers late last season after a stint with the B.C. Lions and also recorded one tackle in two starts to begin the year. In seven CFL games, he has posted seven tackles and a sack.

NEED TO KNOW  WEEK 3
JUNE 17, 2024   Ed Tait

FYI: RB Brady Oliveira, WR Dalton Schoen, LB Kyrie Wilson and DB Deatrick Nichols did not practice on Monday. Oliveira did some light running before the session; Schoen was resting on Day 1 of the practice week while Sergio Castillo handled the punting chores for Jamieson Sheahan... On the weekend the club re-signed DE Ali Fayad and RB/KR Chris Smith, both of whom were dinged in training camp. O'Shea on the defence losing three players in the Ottawa game due to injury in Nichols, and DL Celestin Haba and Miles Fox, both now on the six-game injured list: "It was unusual, sure. I think I'd have to look really hard to find another game like that — I'm sure it happened, I just don't remember when. I also think that we were right there at the end with an opportunity and then another opportunity (to win it)."

TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Smith and Myron Mitchell were handling some of the return chores on Monday. If you recall, Smith had a 109-yard punt return touchdown in the preseason, but was also injured in that game and released. He's healthy now and back, but O'Shea won't say publicly if they are contemplating a change with the return game.

"WE'VE GOT TO PLAY THREE-PHASE FOOTBALL."
JUNE 18, 2024   Ed Tait

FYI: RB Brady Oliveira and DB Deatrick Nichols did not practice on Tuesday, but WR Dalton Schoen and LB Kyrie Wilson were back at work. Asked specifically about Oliveira, O'Shea said: "He's working extremely hard and making a lot of progress so we'll see where that lands him."... RB Chris Smith has been busy since his return, getting more work with Oliveira out and sharing some kick return duties with Myron Mitchell. O'Shea on Smith's readiness and possible return to the lineup: "I still think there's a difference between in shape enough to practice and then what goes on in a game but I like what I've seen so far. He certainly seems like he stayed on top of his stuff, too, which is important."... Defensive tackle Devin Adams, who handled punting chores during his days at Peru State and Delaware State, took a few reps kicking the ball at practice Tuesday. He's no Jamieson Sheahan or Bob Cameron, but he did launch a few, which drew hoots and hollers from his teammates. "There's not much that guy can't do," said O'Shea. "In fact, Id have to think really hard about what we wouldn't ask him to do on a football field. He's been not only good, he's been fun to have around. He's fired up on a daily basis."

Lions without Canadian REC Jevon Cottoy for matchup with Bombers
By 3Down Staff -June 20, 2024

The B.C. Lions will be without hulking Canadian receiver Jevon Cottoy for Friday's matchup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The six-foot-five, 230-pound target has been a staple of the Lions' starting lineup since 2019, hauling in 187 receptions for 2,312 yards and 11 touchdowns in 68 career games. He missed practice all of this week with a hamstring injury and has been placed on the one-game injured list.

In Cottoy's absence, American receiver Stanley Berryhill III will make his CFL debut. The 26-year-old caught five passes for 66 yards in two preseason games this year. He previously recorded 139 catches for 1,477 yards and nine touchdowns over a four-year career at the University of Arizona, before suiting up in four games for the Detroit Lions without recording a catch. His NFL career came to an end in 2023 following a gambling suspension.

Also drawing into the lineup to fulfill ratio requirements is rookie Canadian receiver Kieran Poissant, who is also a product of the CJFL like Cottoy.

Defensively, veteran Ciante Evans will return to his regular field halfback spot after missing last week due to a non-football-related matter. Ronald Kent Jr., who recorded seven tackles in his absence against Calgary, has been placed on the practice roster, as has American linebacker Ayinde Eley.

First-round draft pick George Una continues to be the team's only healthy scratch. Fellow Canadian offensive linemen Michael Couture (back) and David Knevel (foot) have both been upgraded to the six-game injured list after spending last week on the one-game.

The B.C. Lions (1-1) will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-2) on Friday, June 21 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Your #BCLions week 3 depth chart is in

Here's how we will line up tomorrow night in Winnipeg:

Winnipeg Blue Bombers list RB Brady Oliveira as backup vs. B.C. Lions
By John Hodge -June 20, 2024

Brady Oliveira is expected to play against the B.C. Lions on Friday night, though the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have listed him as a backup to Johnny Augustine.

The CFL's reigning Most Outstanding Canadian missed last week's game against the Ottawa Redblacks due to a knee injury and didn't practice this week. He carried the ball 11 times for 38 yards and caught three passes for 17 yards in Winnipeg's season-opening loss to the Montreal Alouettes, though he didn't finish the game.

The five-foot-ten, 222-pound native of Winnipeg, Man. was named a league all-star last season after rushing for 1,534 yards and nine touchdowns and making 38 receptions for 482 yards and four touchdowns, becoming only the fifteenth player in league history to finish a season with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage.

Two-time CFL all-star defensive back Deatrick Nichols has been moved to the one-game injured list due to a shoulder injury with Marquise Bridges expected to start in his place. Defensive linemen Celestin Haba and Miles Fox, both of whom left last week's game against Ottawa, have also come off the roster and been added to the six-game injured list.

Winnipeg has made several other roster changes with rookies Michael Chris-Ike, Max Charbonneau, and Myron Mitchell being moved to the practice roster.

Michael Griffin, a former member of the Calgary Stampeders, will dress in a depth role in the secondary, while defensive linemen Jamal Woods and Owen Hubert were called up from the practice roster. Ali Fayad, who was brought back this week after being cut during training camp, will also dress in a depth role off the edge.

Chris Smith
, who returned a punt for a touchdown during the preseason, will make his regular season debut with the Blue Bombers as a return specialist. He was a surprise cut following training camp, though it was later reported that he was released after suffering a minor injury.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-2) will host the B.C. Lions (1-1) on Friday, June 21 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers bring back Ravi Alston to aid ailing receiving corps
By 3Down Staff -June 24, 2024

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have bolstered their receiving corps amid a rash of injuries, bringing back Ravi Alston.

The six-foot-three, 203-pound native of Lake Elsinore, Calif. joined the team midway through the 2023 season and made one start, though he didn't record any statistics. He was released partway through training camp last month.

The 25-year-old made 27 catches for 398 yards and one touchdown at Montana State University in 2022, finishing as the team's second-leading receiver. He previously played at St. John's University.

Kenny Lawler remains on Winnipeg's six-game injured list with a fractured arm, while Dalton Schoen and Keric Wheatfall left last week's loss to the B.C. Lions with non-contact injuries and did not return. As of the publishing of this article, the team has yet to formally update the status of either player.

NEED TO KNOW WEEK 4
JUNE 24, 2024   Ed Tait

Memo to Lady Doom, or whatever evil deity has decided to bring all this misfortune to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of late: back off, please and thanks, because it's June and the club's infirmary is already overloaded with star power.

Head coach Mike O'Shea confirmed the worst fears of everyone in Bomberland after practice Monday, indicating that receivers Dalton Schoen and Keric Wheatfall will be lost for an extended period.

On Schoen, the club's leading receiver in each of the last two seasons: "It's going to be a while. The injury report is going to come out later in the day and he'll be on the six-game. We'll see after that but it'll be a while."

And on Wheatfall, the promising rookie who had made the last two starts: "He'll probably be a little while, too... I don't know how long that will be but...  not short."

Schoen and Wheatfall join a six-game injured list that already includes Kenny Lawler from the receiving group as well as four projected starting defensive linemen in Cam Lawson, Celestin Haba, Miles Fox and TyJuan Garbutt along with defensive backs Jake Kelly, Jamal Parker and Noah Hallett.

The Blue Bombers brought back receiver Ravi Alston, who was with the club for chunks of last season and in camp this year before being injured, and Monday's practice featured Nic Demski, Drew Wolitarsky, Ontaria Wilson, Jeremy Murphy and Joshua Johnson among the receiver group, along with Kevens Clercius and Myron Mitchell.
