This should stimulate some discussion!

Commissioner Randy Ambrosie floats idea for new CFL playoff format

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie has a new idea for post-season seeding in the three-down league.

Ambrosie shared the possibility during his first Randy?s Road Trip stop in Ottawa Saturday night.

"Major League Baseball is thinking about changing its playoff format where more teams would be involved. Here's an idea that?s been floated. The first-place teams in the East and West would win their divisions and would host a playoff game - the same as we currently have," Ambrosie said at TD Place's Otto's Club from Ottawa Sun reporter Tim Baines.

"The difference would be that the third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place teams in the league would make the playoffs, regardless of division. Third would play sixth and fourth would play fifth. It makes the late-stage competition for a playoff game more important."

It can be tough to ensure playoff balance in a nine-team league, especially in a year when one division - in recent seasons its been the West - is far superior to the other. The crossover rule was implemented to try to maximize meaningful and competitive games down the stretch and to reward the better teams with playoff spots.

CFL purists often point to the history of the East versus West play downs as a reason to eschew evolution. Based on what Ambrosie had to say, it seems as though the league is at least open to considering adjustment of the current playoff setup.

"Here's the next change: After the two semi-final games are played on Saturday, Sunday would be decision day for the first-place team. On a nationally broadcast show, the first-place team would pick who they're playing from the (two semi-final winners," Ambrosie said.

"It's something we're talking about. If we did this, what we might have to agree on is we would do this for a limited amount of time until we got Halifax into the league - then we might have to make a different decision."

Hate this idea.  What a gimmick.  Might as well ask Vince McMahon for ideas.

First part good
Second part cheesy.
Creativity is. Good but so is structure.

How about putting monitors for replays in each section like a modern day facility, ha, ha
How about smaller  beer cup sizes and a lower price...won't last long, but....beer would be Colder, and then when finished, .....everyone would be in need of another..hic!
How about having the post game show in the Pinnacle lounge

Might as well just go to 1 division. 1st and 2nd get the bye. 3 plays 6. 4 plays 5. In any case, get rid of the stupid first place gets to choose their opponent. That's just dumb.

I don't mind having the top teams in each division getting a bye and 3-6 playing each other. But having teams pick who they'll play sounds like what has been suggested in MLB and it's not well liked there either. This makes it sound like a game show.

What role would the league commissioner have in determining any of this?

The notion of picking your opponent is pure stupidity. Keep that playground nonsense for things like all star games. It has no place in pro sports when it comes to determining a champion.

First place get byes.

Seed 3v6/4v5 for the remaining teams based on recons, not divisional standing. Or even abandon divisions al together this way. Top team gets worst remaining seed, second team gets best remaining seed. Simple.

2019 would have looked thusly:

1. Hamilton (Bye)
2. Saskatchewan (Bye)
3. Calgary
4. Winnipeg
5. Montreal
6. Edmonton

Playoffs:

Edmonton at Calgary
Montreal at Winnipeg

Assuming home teams win:

Calgary at Saskatchewan
Winnipeg at Hamilton

Knowing what we know, that certainly would have been different than what happened, and we'd have had the most impactful change as a result.

2018 would have been crazier, especially in a no-divisions format.

1. Calgary
2. Saskatchewan
3. Ottawa
4. Winnipeg
5. BC
6. Edmonton

Hamilton misses completely and Edmonton gets in.

Edmonton at Ottawa
BC at Winnipeg

Then:

Winnipeg at Calgary
Ottawa at Saskatchewan

The records were very tight. Would have made for a very wild last few weeks.

It's a great idea to reseed regardless of division. Not sure I like the "choose your opponent" but I can see why they would want to do that. It would be intriguing.

Meh... is this just his sneaky way of saying Schooners isn't happening at all?  If we're getting 10 teams, just leave things alone until we get 10 teams.

If we're not getting 10 teams... meh.  The 3rd-6th format would generally help WPG and hurt the East.  I guess that's ok.  However, while the East is perpetually weaker, they seem to take away about 50% of the cups regardless.  And since when is a 6th place team ever going to beat a 3rd?

The "pick your poison" idea is dumb.  Teams will think they are so smart then get creamed and it will be an entire off-season of second-guessing the choice.

If they do get to 10 teams they shud go with Wally Buono's proposal and have 7 teams make the play-offs. There would be no divisions and the 1st over-all team would get a bye. There would be 3 games on semi-final weekend (More revenue for teams and league).

This would reward the teams that have the best regular season records. It would also be reasonable as there is no sense in having divisions if all the teams are playing the same schedule.

One current argument for having divisions is it allows for Eastern representation in the playoffs. With this format you would still get a minimum of 2 Eastern play-off teams.

Hey Blue,
I was just including improvements other than the play-off format.

Not a fan of choosing which team you play.....wait till we get the Schooners franchise and then change the current format.....but I don't think it needs to with 10 teams

W.t.f pick your team... sure let?s go with nicknames on jerseys, and each team can swap a player with the other team also. While we are at it why don?t we swap a football for a frisbee in the 4 quarter also...or is the  next proposal to let teams pick how many quarters they play.

I can just hear it now..
?Today the Bombers play the Lions, the Lions have decided to make the game thirds, that?s right folks we will play 3, 3rds today, and Wpg has chosen to swap Lawler for Burnham for today?s game. ? He hate me? will know do the coin toss. ?
