Blue Bombers extend contract of defensive back Mercy Maston

WINNIPEG, MB., December 9, 2019 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has extended the contract of pending free agent defensive back Mercy Maston.

Maston (5'11, 202, Boise State, November 10, 1992, Bakersfield, CA) signed with Winnipeg as a free agent in August, playing in three regular season games and all three postseason games. In the 2019 playoffs, Maston registered 13 defensive tackles, one interception and one sack.

He played two seasons (2017-2018) for the Edmonton Eskimos, recording 57 tackles, eight special teams stops and two interceptions in 19 games. The Eskimos released him on January 4, 2019 to pursue the NFL opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles. He appeared in 25 games with five starts, recording 71 tackles and one interception for Boise State.

Maston might have been the key late-season acquisition by the genius Mafia.  He had a brilliant playoff run, even though he was a bit quiet in the GC.  I think they chose not to test him too much.

Locking down Maston now is a critical move.  Re-sign more guys!  How about Jones#16, Alexander, Wilson and Jeffcoat next!

Jones, Alexander, Wilson, and Jeffcoat are all signed through next year already. Only way they leave is in the NFL window.

Woot woot!  I will sleep easier tonight knowing my key D guys are locked in (along with Biggie).  Taylor would be a nice re-sign too.  Oh ya, and must have Mr Nevis and Stove back too (pretty sure Stove will be in 2nd year of ELC).
