Here's what I want for the schedule as a Christmas present:

1. No CGY three times.  I'd like BC/EDM for the extra games, thank you.
2. Not sure I like this all-your-division season enders like we had this year.  It would be nice to have some easy east times to clobber in the last 1-3 weeks.
3. Less triple-headers
4, Less wacky bye week placement

You'll likely get your wish because we played both the Riders and Stamps three times each this past season.

1. We had the Riders three times in both 2018 and 2019. I know that they are a rivalry game and they generate extra interest, but that needs to be spread around.

2. We have had the divisional season-enders for several years (the NFL does this, too). The problem that it creates is that a West team always ends the season with a bye week. It served us very well this year, so maybe that isn't such a problem.

3. I agree on the triple-headers. I would add that they should be playing day games on Thanksgiving Monday.

4. Bye weeks don't seem to get evenly spaced for teams. We had an early-season bye, and then two late-season bye weeks. Again, this helped us down the stretch this year. I just don't want them to go back to having teams play two games in the same week in order to facilitate scheduling. The quick turnarounds after Labour Day are difficult enough for teams.

5. Division match-ups (outside of the traditional back-to-back games) should also be spread around a bit more. We were done with BC and Edmonton in August, before we even played Saskatchewan once. Saskatchewan played Edmonton twice: back-to-back in the last two weeks of the season. That's just goofy.

Schedule is out. Probably an official release to come soon. Bombers have a bye week 2, 7, and 17. We've got Calgary and Edmonton three times each. The Riders and BC twice.

At a glance: Bombers have a bye week 2, 7, and 17. We've got Calgary (twice in Calgary) and Edmonton (twice in Winnipeg) three times each. The Riders and BC twice.

Tough start: @Hamilton, bye, vs Calgary, @Edmonton

I think you get the same team three times two consecutive years. One with the home game advantage and one without. Next year, we should have Edmonton three times (with two trips to Commonwealth) and BC three times (with them coming here twice).

That's the second year in a row this happened.

Last year W1 we were in BC, W2 was a bye, and we didn't have our home opener until W3 against EDM.

I really wonder how many people that can't afford a cottage but would prefer attending a Friday night game in summer.
I would bet there are more fans in the stands for Friday night football.

Always thought the same. Maybe in years past. But the demographics and the economics have changed. Maybe the next generation of fans will speak up and ask for more Fridays. Or it might even be a TSN thing etc, to work there brand. Tough to say. But saying 15000 fans wont come cause of a cottage...Hard one to believe..

I am a cottager who likes the Thursday games, but I agree. There is not 15k fans not coming to Friday games because of that and attendance is not better on Thursdays. This is not, and never was, the reason why Thursday games are played though. It's all about the TV contract and you can only televise so many games on Friday, and Saturday/Sunday games in the summer would be a disaster for attendance AND TV ratings. Far worse than Thursdays. One has to remember that a very big % of a CFL team's revenue is TV contract. No Thursday games and our TV deal depreciates significantly and our TV contract is what keeps this league going.

It looks like a difficult schedule to start the season. If the Bombers are 2-1 or better after the first three weeks its going to be a good season. We start in Hamilton, then Calgary at home and Edmonton on the road. Thats going to be a challenge for sure!

I used to really hate the Thursday games and was vocal about it but now I've learned to live with them. I can handle 2-3 a year, as long as it's not anymore than that. I try to think of it as a way of enjoying Bombers and my entire summer weekend without interruption, with the opportunity to go out of town for the weekend if so desired. Fridays are a bit tough with a big head but if the Bombers win, I really don't mind. Maybe this year I will book off the friday after for one or all of them and then turn them into "opportunities for weekend improvement"  Grin

Also, aside from the cottager camp (no pun intended), another reason we are prime to get them is our central time zone. With teams further east and further west, you can schedule friday double headers (which TSN loves to do) with an early game and late game, respectively. a 7:30 CST kick off does not work as a late or early game without overlap.

I like the schedule, just the one back to back, a good mix of bye weeks and no more than 2 in a row on the road.  This is probably the best schedule the Bombers have had in many years.  I guess a Grey Cup win has its perks.

I like this schedule. 3 Thursday 3 Friday and 3 Saturday home games are fair. We never play more than 2 games in a row against the same division and for those that don't like them I only see 1 Saturday triple header. The only thing that I don't like is that as The Grey Cup Champs we should open at home and not have to wait until week 3.

I like Thursday games, but I love drinking beer at a home Bomber game in the heat of the Mb summer, and Thursdays make that a little tougher to do. I do wish a couple more of the Thursday home game were later in the year, but I get that the schedule will never work for everyone.

I think the Bombers schedule is better than some of the other Western teams;

- Lions with 3 bye weeks in the 2nd half of the season
- Stamps with 4 away games in a row,
- Riders with 3 back-to-backs, short week after their neutral site game, only 3 home games in the 2nd half of the season.

Meh, 3 vs CGY and 2 of them at McMahon.  Those will be tough games.  At least our other 3-time team is EDM, who I expect will be blah again.

Yes, the byes look better this year.  The E vs W spacing is better.  The end to the year should be easy-ish for us to pad our W column.  Sucks to not have a home game until end of June!  Kid won't like that.  I thought Ambrosie was going to continue moving the season start forward, but this is no change for 2 seasons now?

We have a similar TOR/OTT away/away stretch again: do we stay out East again or better to fly back?

One very smart move is we have 2 away games in the final 2 weeks (one in BC!) so we avoid the low-attendance colder games to close the season.  That should help our overall all-season attendance.

Overall, a nice schedule for us!

The NFL does a great job of hyping the season opener...

Why not:  Bombers and Hamilton from the home of the Grey Cup Champions...Prime time...

That's how you build some hype to the season

Not sure why you expect Edmonton to be blah again. They have a great QB, and a rock solid defence. A couple tweaks and they could become a very good team. Edmonton/Calgary will be a tough 6 games.

There was talk of it happening but not sure it was ever 100% settled on...I don't agree with moving it any earlier.  Maybe once another team is added it becomes easier but even then I like it now or even how it was - starting regular season last week in June/Canada Day.

Edm doesn't have a rock solid defence.

They finished 3rd in the league in PA and have a formidable front 7. Not sure what you were watching but Edmonton's defence is good. Their biggest problem this year was losing their QB for half the season and not having an O and backup QB that could score enough points to win afterwards. At the time Harris went down, Edmonton was 2 points out of first place.

How odd is it that our pre-season home game is on a Sunday? I can't ever remember that.

There was talk of it happening but not sure it was ever 100% settled on...I don't agree with moving it any earlier.  Maybe once another team is added it becomes easier but even then I like it now or even how it was - starting regular season last week in June/Canada Day.

The problem is that between 2013 (pre-Ottawa) to the 2018 season, we went from a 19 week season to a 21 week season with the addition to a second bye week to accommodate a now odd numbered team league, and a third bye negotiated in the newest CBA. So despite starting the season mid-June, we still are playing the Grey Cup game on November 20-something.

Definitely there is more hype by starting the season on Canada Day long weekend as it jives with the unofficial start of summer (with kids being off and a lot of people taking holidays to coincide), but I like to look at it as more home games to go to in the summer, when it is infinitely more fun than attending post-Labour Day games when the laissez-faire feelings and heat of the summer are behind us.

Just wanted to comment that while Thursday Bomber games are not ideal IMO, I absolutely love to watch the Thursday nighters in the summer that don't include the Bombers.

I've settled into a nice routine of getting home on a Thursday and doing all or most of my yard work for the week and coming in and cooling off with lots of cold beer and some CFL. Throw on some burgers or dogs and a helping of potato salad for a late dinner.

Can you tell I'm missing summer?

I wonder if the Bombers don't really like the early start to the season. This is two years in a row that they start on the road followed by a bye week before playing a home game. Perhaps they've lobbied the league to ensure that they aren't playing a home game in mid June. This year would have made much sense for them to open at home, but they aren't.

It could also be that we were the victim of circumstance; i.e. maybe other teams declared their wishes such that they trumped those of the Bombers.

Hard to say when it's unclear to what degree each team has a say in the schedule and what variables trump others, etc.

This is true. I do know that Calgary has long avoided home games during Stampede. I don't know if the Bombers try to avoid games during the Red River Ex.

Yikes to all the thursday home games in the summer.  Ambroise gotta go.
Thursday game are fine.  Ambroise is fine.  More love, less hate.
Thursday games....love it. Thank you CFL.
agree
Thursday games... book the Friday off[, and drive to the cottage early (albeit hungover...)
agree, minus hangover, sober 2 years
Sick of hearing the cottage excuse for Thursday night football.
I really wonder how many people that can't afford a cottage but would prefer attending a Friday night game in summer.
I would bet there are more fans in the stands for Friday night football.
fact, cottage / camping / seasonal campers / park users are a big portion of total fans
fact, numbers on Thurs/Fri are close

I did the numbers for home games on Thursdays and Fridays before Labour Day from 2013 (first year at IGF) thru 2019. Fridays win out by about 625 people on avg, for which the significance is debatable but is notable. Also lots of variables, such as one year on a Thursday we hosted the Riders and sold out. In 2013 our only Thursday game was the first game ever at IGF which was a sellout, so that skews the numbers considerably.

In any case PJ, I think the point the anti-thursday folks are making is that they will attend the games no matter what, they're just not preferred. These are the people that don't have a second home at the lake and their weekend fun is attending Bomber games. It's easier to have your fun when you don't have to work the next day.

Thanks for doing the homework for us.  Turns out they are similar in attendance.  There you go goldy!

The during the week vs. Weekend games is debated every year.  I prefer a mix and I am pro Thursday.  The "fun" one has at the game should be a function of the entertainment value provided on the field, which is normally pretty darn good any day of the week.

Here are the numbers comparing attendance Thursdays and Fridays pre Labour day for the last 5 years. My assessment is the numbers don't support that Thursday's are the fan's preferred day. If anything, the opposite. The Club seems to feel that Thursday's are better and I'm not sure why. My guess is that is what the fan surveys are telling them. IMO they should go by what people do and not what they say.

Certainly the football is the most important factor when attending a game, and believe me, if I go to work with a big head on Friday after a big Bomber win the previous night and celebrated a bit too hard, I don't mind one bit (although still arguable that it would have been that much better if the game was on the Friday instead Wink). However, the other ~30% is the game day experience. The pregame drinks and food, getting to take it all in, and sometimes having a post-game celebration that can go a little late. This last part is just better on the weekends lol.

Like I posted earlier, I am going to plan to just take off the Friday after each of the three Thursday games this year, which is something I've always wanted to do but scheduling did not previously permit. Gonna make it that much sweeter.

While fan preference plays a role, it's mostly TV-driven. TSN wants Thursday games.

The league has a total of 13 Thursday night games.
The Bombers have 3 of those as home games, so definitely a disproportionate share.

One reason could be that a game in Winnipeg strikes a good balance between the local start time and tv kickoff times across the country.
This would be more of consideration on Thursdays.

Yes, time zone plays a role I'm sure. Fridays they want to do doubleheaders, and our central timezone doesn't permit us because we are neither late or early (literally central, lol).

Throw in the cabin culture and our short summers and it's a recipe for 3 Thursdays a year.

Not sure how much I like it, but I get it.

   Average       25,832     26,998

We should keep in mind that 1000-ish more attendance at, say, $60 avg admission price, is $60,000 extra in the coffers.  Figure, say, $10 avg concession spend (offsetting normal $20-$50 spenders with the $0 spenders), is $10,000 extra.  My numbers are probably conservative, but that's at least $70k per game lost revenue if it's purely a Thu/Fri thing.

Now, if it's TSN dictating we need more Thu games, and it's provable the butt revenue is smaller on Thu, shouldn't TSN kick the WFC a larger share of the $$ pie?

Personally, Thu games are fine with me!  I like all games the same, except early afternoon games: hard on my schedule!  But WFC should do what makes them the most money.  I guarantee you the bean counters there have figured out all the numbers, in nice little charts, etc.  Too bad we don't get to see those...

Good job crunching the $$$$, puts it into perspective.

The numbers are close and if you took away all Thursday games the Friday attendance would suffer slightly due to lack of variety in the schedule and some fans would step away.  It wouldn't be a big difference but I think the variety of game day schedules works well for both the fans and Tv deal.

Another factor is you need 20 or 30 years of data on attendance to really understand the fans habits.  Limited sample sets make for weaker stats.

Lets all hope we get a bump closer to 30k but that likely unrealistic.  Always nice to pack the house.  I would also love to know the actual number of people at the game because like it stated above the concession revenue is significant.

Too many variables at play to make any head to head comparison in relation to fan preference really. Weather/other events/etc etc all play a role in attendance. If the Bombers can attract roughly the same amount of fans on a Thursday vs. a Friday they are doing a great job. There are some CFL markets that just can't host a Thursday home game because they would not be able to put 15k in the seats. Like it or not we are one of the league's only profitable teams. Also, our TV ratings, as well as the Riders, and Edmonton supply TSN with a big enough audience to reciprocate some value back to TSN. Us having Thursday games is good for the league, and good for the TV contract.

I don't so much care about the days of the week. I try to look at it mostly from a team/winning standpoint and I like what I see for the most part. I like playing Hamilton and Calgary and our away game in Edmonton early. It's a tough start but the beginning of the season is often pre-season 2.0 and all teams are closer together. Our last month of the season is vs Edmonton, vs Toronto, @BC, @Montreal which is nice. We've got two trips to Calgary afterwards but we've had success there recently and if we only need a split I am confident we can take that series.

Ya, the separate-column fridge magnet thingy for STH in '19 was great for our family -- just had it on the fridge and my son would check it every day to see if a home game was coming up so he could bug me to take him.  I'm sure we weren't the only people reminded by the magnet!  However, it makes more sense to give them to non-STH, as the STH have already paid whether they remember to go or not!  Wink
