"I've got a lot of good people around me." | Nichols ready to Help Streveler, Rehab - Ed Tait

Chris Streveler's voice has been heard loudest in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers huddle for five games now, dating back to mid-August.

But that transition from one offensive alpha male to another isn't always clean, or cut and dried. And it wasn't until last week - and season-ending shoulder surgery for Matt Nichols - that there was clarity at the quarterback position for the Bombers. There had been fingers-crossed Nichols might return for a late-season push to the playoffs before last week's news quashed that scenario.

That's what made two scenes which unfolded in Bomberland Tuesday so intriguing.

First, there was Nichols speaking with the media for the first time since going under the knife in a press conference that pushed 14 minutes and touched on everything from the surgery, to rehab to his impending free agent status and his future with the team.

And later, following practice, there was Streveler also meeting with the media and trying to fixate solely on this Saturday?s critical matchup in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and not any big-picture take. Streveler, as many already know, is also in the final year of his contract.

First, Nichols, who had been rehabbing his shoulder before suffering 'a turn' last week.......

Nichols is solid vet that can teach.  Strev isn't a star and might not ever be but there is chance with patience and proper grooming that he could be.

I wouldn't have wrote it if I didn't believe it.  Will be awesome to find out.  Stay tuned.

Sympathetic piece and all but this is professional sports, he's not getting younger, he's now beginning to be injured more often. And particularly with shoulder injuries he's now more vulnerable on that shoulder. Plus he's won one playoff game since being the starter. TIme to move on. I don't know if it's Strev either. There are some free agents next year Masoli, Fajardo, Arbuckle... The health of Masoli may be a question with the knee and that would have to be cleared completely and if it is I can't see T-Cats signing him with Evans outstanding play.  I'd love to win a bidding war with Saskatchewan for Fajardo because he's better than Strev and what a fantastic feeling to take away their prize QB.

Fajardo would look a good here but I am not betting on it at all.

Pj, you also wrote that our D was #1 D in the league and then admitted that you really didn't mean it.

I think our D is capable of being #1 in the CFL, and has looked it at times this year.  They certainly have the talent for it.  They just need to pull it all together and get properly prepared and bring it every week.  As some say, it seems to be a head issue, not a talent issue.

It's funny how fast people here will change their tune on the D if we win vs SSK and CGY/CGY and go deep in the playoffs.  Big if... but it is possible.

When they fire Richie Hall then there is a chance they will be #1.

But Hall has also had games this year where his scheme worked to perfection and even the sceptics around here were singing his praises... He needs to get back to that mode.

The only way the Bomber D get better is with a different defensive approach, and a few new bodies in the secondary that play as a unit.

that's the same thing I said about the defense last week, Jekyll and Hyde... but I misspelled Jekyll, lol...

I put it in another thread here this morning but the biggest difference is that while giving up a ton of yards on the regular, when teams got to the red zone we were able to stop them from scoring TDs and made them settle for FGs... that's not happening as of late...

We have been staying tuned for a number of years. I fear that my tuner will need to be replaced by the time the Bombers get to the promised land! I may have to switch channels!
