Hopefully Matthews is good to go for game 2. Then they can remove Nelson and add Mike Jones, who would be an extra DB and help with return duties.

Hmmm. Interesting idea that might be considered. It may be the team is still deciding on which of Nelson or Whitehead remain on the game day roster. If both perform well it could be both, 1 or neither if they under perform. We still have Bailey on 1 game IR and Walker on PR.

Even once Matthews dresses it may take more than one game to determine values of the new import receivers and any perceived liability in not having a DB as a DI.

Maybe the rookie Canadian DB's show something special. Maybe people that believe Jones can play well as the 6th DB or in game injury replacement are correct.

As long as we play well and preferably win games, any decisions can be delayed.

things always seem to shake out - someone gets nicked, plays bad, has turnovers etc etc

Part of the concern is the TC injury to Rose. Never really heard what the injury was but with limited practice he may struggle with game readiness ( speed and conditioning ) and / or the injury flaring up.

And Rose is going to see a lot of Duron.

And Rose is going to see a lot of Duron.

It may have been a minor injury like a sprained wrist / finger they didn't want him knocking down passes in practice. But if it was an ankle or knee problem then that might flare up in a full speed game.

In any case I'm looking forward to Rose becoming an excellent addition to our secondary.

if we lose a HB then Fenner can slide there and Jones can play boundary corner..same with corner...one goes down..he can cover that...and never really watched much of Exume in camp but many said after draft he was a dark horse steal...so maybe he showed well...who knows...

We know Fenner is versatile and could move to HB, SAM.

IIRC Alexander missed a practice this week so he's not 100% healthy either.

Jones at CB? He couldn't even beat Hecht out at safety after the off season hoopla. IMO he has yet to prove he's even adequate as an in game injury replacement. Against Reilly even less confidant.

Our starting secondary has 3 changes to begin the season. Even though those are veteran players, there will be some communication issues initially.

it was said in media Alexander missed with an equipment issue...no biggie..and Jones has played on corner before and practiced there for last 2 years..I'm sure as an in game replacement it would not kill us..

Yep. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is:

Each team may dress a 45-man active roster consisting of:

3 QBs (no designation)
Maximum of 20 international players (4 of which must be identifed as designated internationals (DIs))
Minimum of 21 national players (a minimum of 7 national players that will start on either offensive or defensive teams)
Minimum of 1 global player

The four designated international (DIs) players are players who can play on special teams OR replace an international starter (they cannot start).

fixed it for ya! lol...  Grin

but seriously, does anyone know WHY there is a DI rule in the first place? essentially the requirement to start 7 nationals on either offense or defense will automatically limit the number of international players able to start... to me it would seem that it only impacts the first play of a team's offensive and defensive series... after that, it doesn't really mean anything... right?

and a second related roster question... what is the Reserve Roster (2 players) for? according to the CBA it reads: "prior to the commencement regular season schedule, each member club shall in accordance with the time table prescribed by management council, establish it's RESERVE ROSTER of 2 players"

lastly, I found this beautiful illustration that helps to understand the team make up and how it effects ratio and SMS: https://razzledazzle.cfldb.ca/razzle/cfl-roster-makeup/

They do have to keep track of the DI rule throughout the game. If the Bombers start 6 Nationals on offence then they need to continue to have 6 Nationals for every offensive play. The DI can only go on to replace another International.

Proof will be in the pudding so to speak. You believe that and I don't.

I?m a bit concerned about this game because of our new o line. Will they open up run game? Will they give Matt time? And our lack of experience at receiver is a bit worrisome as the timing may not quite be there. However I?m not sure how effective their d line is and I?ve never heard of this Termansen guy. Anyone worried about Carter and Burnham on Sayles and Rose? I?m interested to see how they fare. I think this game hinges on the effectiveness of our d line against their questionable o line. Even with no time Reilly can bite you but we?ve had success in the past when we got in his face with a variety of blitzes aka last year?s 30-3 beat down at Commonwealth.

Originally, there was only one DI, the back-up QB.  This was because there were not enough Cdn QBs at a skill level that could effectively back-up.  At some point (not sure of the year), they expanded the number of DIs so they could include return specialists and make the game more exciting.

The number of DIs has been creeping up since (it was only 3 a few years ago).  In a parallel move the league exempted QBs from the ratio/DI ratio altogether.  This kept QB quality high, but meant one more DI pushing a non-QB Canadian of the roster.

Personally, I would like to see them keep the QB exemption and cut back to 2 DIs.

No Matthews in our lineup means our offense won?t be able to keep up to BCs offense. Our D has got to step up in this game. Don?t like our chances
