Apparently he's going to one of the Riders open tryout camps.

He's old as sin now, but it'd be cool to see him in the league again.

His last full season in 2017 he had a 45.0 yard average on 92 punts. Career wise his average was 44+ yards.

It's a little deceiving with how many NFL punts are not caught / returned. But it does show he still has a strong leg.

OTOH he has enough NFL money to buy the CFL. lol

But he can still punt the ball. He is also a Regina boy, has tons on money, and is probably living out his childhood dream.

I think Ryan can still play at a high level. Why he'd want to do that for CFL money I have no idea. Teams have been struggling finding Canadian kickers more than they used to but some still exist.

How much is a Canadian punter worth in the Canadian market at the moment if it forces a team towards 2 kickers on the roster? Not sure but it would be interesting to see him back.

Just to stay busy? Especially if it's for the Riders.

You might be able to convince him to play for the minimum if he's just doing it for kicks (he he).

Maybe he just wants to play football. With the money he's made in the NFL a team that needs a punter could probably get him cheap.

No doubt he still wants to play, and will, for the Riders this year , and will do it very well. It?s not like he s a running back. Cripes, Lui Pasaglia, Bob Cameron and Paul Mccallum all played when they were older than Ryan. Can?t wait to see him play!! Betcha he can still boot the crap out of the ball !!

I'm happy for him if he gets to extend his career a couple more years. Would love to see him back in the CFL...even if it is with the Riders. I can't see many teams with a good young kicker cutting them loose for a 38 year old punter though. Riders do sound like a good landing spot for them as Bartel is no spring chicken either.

Which is exactly why he'll probably end up in the CFL again. I'd say he's still got a few seasons left in him.

Yes, he is....and he's gotten a ton of work the past few years. This would be a kind of lateral move imo.

In the following interview it sounds like Ryan just wants to play football as long as he can and doesn't care where it happens, he may well play into his mid 40's.  He mentions 3 or 4 other CFL teams being interested in addition to the Riders and Argos.

If I made it big and got to play in the NFL and retire in my late 30s a millionaire, and played the least physical position in the game, I would say hellz yeah to living in my home town and playing for the team I cheered for growing up.

It would be a fantastic story. Do not confuse my message- Riders still suck, obvs.

He'll do more than that. I realize you weren't a Bomber fan yet when Ryan was in the CFL, but he is a top notch punter. When he was here before he was easily the best punter I had ever seen, and I watched Bobby Cameron for 20 years.

As excited as one gets for a punter. True they are not 1000 yard receivers, or QBs, but their work has an immense impact on every game. Whoever signs him is getting a very good ST player. He won't sell jerseys or put bums in the seat directly, but his contribution will help his team have a better chance to win....and winning sells jerseys and puts bums in seats.

I remember Ryan absolutely crushing a couple of 70(ish) yard punts, and not all were wind assisted.  So, yeah, as excited as you can get about a punter, he would be the one you'd get excited for.

As to what he can do today, who knows, but pretty sure he can still beat someone out for a job.

I have zero doubt he can beat someone out for a job in the CFL. The questions will be SMS/age and whether any teams want to part with a younger kicker to make room for him.

Bob was the best all weather punter I have ever seen.  Yes Ryan's leg is incredible but Bob could punt in the cold and wind as good any anyone.  I hope he comes back as it would be cool to see him again.

Based on his long NFL career, it's not about money, just loves the game.

I think he would only be in the $80K - $90K range.

Ryan's home, I believe, is in Seattle.  BC needs a kicker so he could go there and be close to home.

Just because he has money doesn't mean he doesn't want money. I can understand a player wanting to continue his career. In this situation where he has " money " does he want to move away from home and family for 6 months for CFL money?

Sure he could move his family from his multi million $$ home in Vancouver, or he could buy another multi million dollar home in Vancouver. It's one thing to do that in the NFL when the contract is millions and goes with the territory. I'm not so sure the desire to play overrules the business sense though.

Would like to see him back. Vancouver makes sense because of proximity to Seattle. It's just a guess though.

Bartel seems like a good punter but if Ryan is better I see no issue. I would have let them battle it out at camp but only so many roster spots to go around

Ah the good ole' kicking game. Doesn't get enough love when they make a good kick because that's their only job and they should do it right. But make a bad kick and you better run and hide. Which is why all kickers should live in an apartment so there isn't easy access to a front door or mailbox.

Reports are that he is making similar to Rob Maver which would put him around 100k. No hometown discount, and no love of the game lowball contract, although it seems Rider fans always expect a discount. Highest paid punter in CFL.

100k is a lot of sms for a punter...that said, I heard someone say the Riders will recoup that in Jon Ryan jersey sales before the season starts...not exactly incorrect.

I imagine he'll be able to double that in off field marketing opportunities....so long as he doesn't stump for his brother in law....

I have zero doubt the Riders will recoup some of the money from jersey sales etc. I highly doubt that Ryan brings in 100k of merch sales but he will bring some in. However, Ryan making 100k means one less vet elsewhere on the team due to the SMS. Personally I have no issue with that because the Riders will rely heavily on STs this year to help offset a garbage offence. I am simply responding to the quacks over at Riderfans who thought that Ryan would play for league minimum.

Probably not, but on the other hand, I don't think money is his prime motivation for returning to the CFL. How much he really cares about making 75K compared to 120K is really anyone's guess. My gut tells me it wouldn't really be a sticking point. The Riders could certainly have got a sweetheart deal.

Right. OK, then, I don't understand your point. The cap hit on Ryan is irrelevant to how much is made in merch. It means you make some money for the club at the expense of having more talent and therefore more success on the field, which has got to be worth far more.

Players are signed to "bring people through the gates" all the time.  The purpose of the business is to make money. Winning is one way to do that...a big way...but there are other ways too.  The $100k incluses all incentives/bonuses.  Which means he's going to have to have a good year to get all that money.

With a bad offense....that punter is critical.
