Blue Bombers Transactions - September 6, 2019

WINNIPEG, MB., September 6, 2019 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the following transactions:

Added to practice roster: National linebacker Brandon Calver (Wilfrid Laurier)

Jeff Hamilton   @jeffkhamilton  4h
Nic Demski won't be in the #Bombers lineup Saturday against the #Riders. Winnipeg will go with Daniel Petermann as his replacement. #wfpP

Darrin Bauming   @DarrinBauming   3h
Hammer with the lineup scoop. #Bombers enter the #BanjoBowl down Andrew Harris, Lucky Whitehead, Nic Demski, and Matt Nichols.

Demski and Whitehead combined for 8 touches for 47 yards in the Labour Day Classic. The team put up 325 total net yards.

I think the #Bombers will be fine with Daniel Petermann, Janarion Grant, and Rasheed Bailey working in their stead. Good things can come from them.

In the end, it remains up to Chris Streveler, especially, as well as Johnny Augustine and possibly even new tailback Larry Rose, to make it all happen offensively.

So much intrigue. The #BanjoBowl is shaping up to be a real gooder.

Concerning but the offence can still do it. Lapo needs to call a master piece and I do not care who it is these dudes need to execute. Not to mention the OL having a better game than last.

Grant scores a TD on a return, 2 as a receiver and 1 on defense late in the game just for kicks.

No problem.

No Demski, no Whitehead...the odds of winning the B.B. are slimming with so many key players missing, worst rash of injuries that I can recall.

Indeed it is crazy but have a whiskey at 9:30 am and the reality will melt away. GO BLUE.

Hopefully peterman is in for Demski , he can make plays for us and there will be very little drop off in terms of production

IIRC John Jefferson scored 3 different ways in the late 80's. Probably 1987 - 1988?

Demski and Whitehead down for this one too? We'll need top performances from everybody and the D will have to be as great as they can be.

Apparently Matt Nichols is a free agent after this season:

Darrin Bauming @DarrinBauming
I received clarity on that which I originally reported. It was a paper move - he is a free agent this coming winter.

Ted Wyman   @Ted_Wyman
Story already corrected. There has been a lot of confusion but I can confirm now that Nichols is a free agent at the end of the season. #CFL #Bombers

i remember his teams gutting out wins using various weapons....our run game was always a factor with Lincoln our premier RB during his hay days.   Our defences were typically stout and our KO team featured LL who still has the best KO YPR average to this day of 29.1 yards!!

is this the result of that contract modification before the season started that no details relevant to terms were made available?  Because he was signed thru 2020 with a roster payment due Jan 15, 2020 prior to that contract mod...  there was a big article about how the Bombers were going to have to make a QB decision in January in regards to Nichols...

Yeah, its a head scratcher.

Nichols' contract was originally to end after 2019 then he was quietly extended for 2020. Now we find out there was a paper move and he is in fact a free agent after this season.

2018-11-28   WPG   NICHOLS, Matt   QB   A   Eastern Washington   Add To   Active Roster
2019-02-19   WPG   NICHOLS, Matt   QB   A   Eastern Washington   Add To   Active Roster
2019-02-19   WPG   NICHOLS, Matt   QB   A   Eastern Washington   Delete From Active   Free Agent

@WinnipegGordo
You reported back in February that Matt Nichols is signed for 2020. Are you able to confirm if that is still the case?

Justin Dunk
Back in February reported Matt Nichols would be a free agent following the 2019 season: 3downnation.com/2019/02/22/jeremiah-masoli-heads-group-of-potential-free-agent-quarterbacks-in-2020/

@StillWears1
You also reported he was under contract for 2020 3downnation.com/2019/02/06/bombers-qb-matt-nichols-set-for-pay-increase-but-bombers-have-an-out/

Justin Dunk   @JDunk12
True. Some paperwork changed over the period between that report and the one that followed.

Jeff Hamilton @jeffhamilton
Seems to be a lot of confusion regarding Matt Nichols contract status for next season. He's not under contact and never was for 2020; the "paperwork" was used as a formality for something else outside of football. He needs a new deal for next season; my guess it will be Winnipeg.

The plot thickens after yesterdays performance from Mr Streveler.
