WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH OFFENSIVE TACKLE JERMARCUS HARDRICK

WINNIPEG, MB., November 28, 2018 -   The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to a one-year contract extension with offensive tackle Jermarcus Hardrick.

"I think it's well-documented our offensive line is a major part of our team, both on and off the field," said General Manager Kyle Walters. "Jermarcus would certainly be one of those players that exemplifies what we look for in an offensive lineman; tough, physical, emotional but controlled. His teammates really love him, and as an organization we appreciate everything he brings."

Hardrick started 15 games in 2018, missing three due to injury. Over his three seasons in Winnipeg, Hardrick has started 49 games at right tackle, being named a West Division All-Star in 2017.

"I've said it many times, but I love this organization, my teammates, and just being in Winnipeg," said Hardrick. "I can't ever say enough about my passion for all of those things, and we are going to come back in 2019 and keep progressing towards our goal."

Why one year? How about two so we don't have to do this again next year.

I wonder if the CFLPA is asking players not to sign longer deals, as the CFLPA president said that they presently regard all contracts, regardless length, as one year commitments as they can be cancelled at any time....  regardless, signing a one year deal just means more and harder work for Walters... and I don't think he is afraid of that.

Not as much as you'd think. Safety is a position that is considered pretty easy to replace therefore the laws of supply and demand factor in. I think the last real good NAT safety was in the 140k neighborhood.

I doubt that is the case. Hardrick has been doing 1 year deals for awhile. So has Medlock.  Even with the lack of guarantee many 2 year deals have a bonus at year end and an increase for year 2. So it's better to have that chance of a bonus and salary increase than to not have it for veterans that are stable long term players.

Antoine Pruneau just signed a 3 year extension with Ottawa.

Guys like Hardrick might be signing one year deals so they get a signing bonus each year.

They get roster bonuses each year which amount to the same thing. They are signing one year deals because they can.

Also super annoyed with the one year deals that are a sigh of relief that is to be extremely short-lived before doing the whole dog and pony show again next year. 'Tis the age we live in, though, unfortunately...

Also, maybe we're looking at Gray taking over a tackle spot moving forward?

Also, maybe we're looking at Gray taking over a tackle spot moving forward?

The team really likes Hardrick and Bryant. Both have just re-signed new deals. Not sure how quickly Gray will adapt to the CFL but he's probably going to be a guard as long as we have those two T's.

Or unless we have an injury. Of course we still have Foketi but if Gray can play tackle that MIGHT make him expendable to make room to keep another Canadian as depth.

Yah, I kind of expect Foketi's run is over.

Meh. He's a good tackle under contract for a reasonable amount I'm sure. No point cutting him until end of preseason and even then only if roster just simply can't hold him. Decent OL are quite hard to find. No point dropping one for no reason

I think we all agree with the idea Foketi is a good player and not that expensive. The point being made is that if we have Canadian OL capable of playing OT we might want that roster spot there instead.

It doesn't matter if a player is on the 2 man reserve or the 1 game IR, it all goes against the SMS.

So if we have Canadian OL we want to not lose than it's the cumulative decision against the SMS. At the end of the season we " rostered " Speller and Gray for example.

No problem with Foketi at TC or possibly even beyond but it might become a decision on how or if he is retained. Roster size, positional players and total SMS are all part of the equation.

We ( as posters ) don't really know what Speller's upside is and Gray needs to show us during TC. He could be a starter for all we know. Then there is the draft and free agency to be worked out.

At this point we have 3 of our 6 rostered NAT OL possibly becoming FA's. There is absolutely no way of knowing whether Foketi will be here or not until that is sorted out.

He is under contract... so he will be here for camp at least...

That's the question alright. In any case I think Foketi will be at TC. Even if things go well in free agency and in TC Foketi could possibly be trade bait or still needed if our Canadian " depth " at tackle is not there.

That's not necessarily true. Players under contract are released during the off season as new player acquisitions are made.

They are released if they have a roster bonus due (not likely in this case) or if we need to roster spot.  Neither of those cases apply.  There is absolutely no reason to release Foketi.  They obviously like the guy, and he seems to like it here.  So, while technically any player can be released at any time, there is absolutely no reason to release Foketi.

Cutting Foketi before TC would be pretty pointless unless he is making a lot of money, which I'm assuming he isn't. I think some posters are forgetting how difficult it is to find decent OL

I'm not saying to release Foketi before or even after TC. Just saying that any player can be potentially released prior to TC as the roster fills up by position and in total.

As long as we use imports at tackle we're going to need import depth at TC. Most of the time that depth ends up on the PR but having to roster a player is a different consideration. We've done it successfully for 2 seasons and my continue that in 2019.

OTOH there will be new competition and by definition, non full time starters are always at some risk. Foketi still can't be making much more than absolute minimum. More but probably well within reason.

It's always possible the scouts find excellent new talent that will accept PR spots. We may draft a bunch of OL we want to retain etc etc.

We don't want Neufeld to be the 1st replacement at tackle if there is any injury. If Gray wins a starting role at guard but also shows he can be a very good back up at T then that changes the options available. Assuming we don't lose Chungh at RG.

I agree Foketi is a good player and could just as easily still be here. How all this shakes out in free agency, draft and scouting is what we'll see over the next few months.

Over 300 potential free agents at the moment.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers Add to Roster - December 4, 2018

WINNIPEG, MB., December 4, 2018 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the club has signed international receiver Evan Clarke, national running back Johnny Augustine, international defensive end Patrick Choudja and international receiver Kenny Lawler.

Clark
(5'10, 190, St. John's University, August 6, 1995 in Phoenix, AZ) played five seasons with the St. John's University Johnnies, totalling 29 touchdowns. In 44 games played, Clark had 90 receptions for 1701 receiving yards, the 14th most all time at St. John's. In 2018, Clark participated in the Kansas City Chiefs rookie camp.

Augustine (5'9, 202, University of Guelph, July 7, 1993 in Welland, ON.) signed as a free agent with Winnipeg prior to last season, and saw action in nine games. Augustine recorded seven carries for 51 yards and one touchdown. He played five seasons with the Guelph Gryphons, rushing for 2,742 yards and 28 touchdowns on 483 rushes. In his senior year, Augustine rushed for 690 yards and nine touchdowns on 122 carries.

Choudja (6'3, 263, Nevada, April 11, 1996 in Oakley, CA) played four seasons with the Nevada Wolfpack, totalling 93 tackles, four and a half sacks and four forced fumbles in 50 games. Choudja signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and spent time on the Bombers' practice roster in 2018.

Lawler (6'2, 203, University of California, June 25, 1994 in Pomona, CA.) was selected in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, spending time on their practice squad in 2016 and 2017. Lawler played three seasons with the California Golden Bears, catching 143 passes for 1706 yards and 27 touchdowns. He spent part of 2018 on the club's practice roster.

Who?

From the mighty St. John's Johnnies.....

Quote
Clark, who was listed at 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds last fall, was an All-MIAC first team pick twice and a three-time D3football.com All-West Region honoree for St. John's.

He caught 29 passes for 496 yards and six touchdowns and rushed 13 times for 202 yards and two touchdowns, playing in 10 of the Johnnies' 11 games this season.

Clark finished his career with 23 receiving touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns and two kick returns for touchdowns. His 29 total touchdowns is 15th on the school's career list.

He is also 14th in career receiving yards (1,701) and his 1,185 kick return yards is second on the career list at St. John's.

Clark graduated from St. John's with a degree in communications in December. After graduating, he said he moved to the Twin Cities and was working out at ETS Next Level in Woodbury.

X1000. Even if Harris couldn't go, LaFrance wasn't a realistic option. Good on him for spinning one sensational game into a multi-year career but I think the ship has sailed.

Reminds me of John Chick. Explosive guy with long arms and a good bull rush.

Obviously, if he could be anywhere near John Chick we are all going to be happy.

Kid has quick feet.  He gets those big tackles moving their mass one way, then creates a little separation with his arms and changes direction quickly.  Look at how often the tackles are forced into holding, or are falling all over their own feet in this vid.  I'd say the kid has decent core skills.

Perrizo is a perfect example of the body type that the CFL will continue to be able to recruit. He is a tweener that is between DL and LBer for the 4 down version of the game.

Why would we not be able to retain Miller? If we retain Biggie you can probably call that the O'Shea effect but Miller? More like the "I gotta fair offer and not many teams are making room for ST specialists anymore so Ill re-up here" effect.

He struck me as a mercenary for hire. Being a career STer, he seems like someone that would change teams for an extra 2k, which he may have gotten by testing FA.

I'm not suggesting he would command a giant raise. I also wasn't sure what a signing priority he was, so the fact that he put his name up for a re-signing at this point is a bit of a surprise and indicates he's happy here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's only ever played for two teams, the Esks and the Bombers, and IIRC he was with the Esks for at least four seasons?  Not really the mercenary/gun for hire mold.

Nonetheless, glad he's back.

Pretty sure all the foot soldier guys we want back will be easily signed...generally the ones that don't come back are the ones that the team actually releases, or has on the PR at end of year and aren't looked at as priority.

The free-agent ones tho that the team deems key to the team...will all be back unless one gets a really hard tio turn down deal from a team where they are from...or close to being from

lol. Just to recap, I made an innocent comment that I was pleasantly surprised by the signing, on a fan discussion forum no less, and the fact that I was a bit surprised has lead you to conclude that I should become more knowledgeable about a special teams player on a CFL team.

I wouldn't say Miller is a bottom end player for the bombers. Canadian, top ST's player, and comes in to block on some O plays.

A correction on here - they have Mekale McKay (Cincinnati) listed as quarterback, however he is a wide receiver.

Just confirming, when we sign players right now that will be earning league minimum, we can sign them the current minimum, and they will get a bump if that goes up.  But if we have current SMS$ available, we can give some of that league min salary up front, right?  So we can safely sign players now that are guys guaranteed to make the team, and have a low likelihood of ending up on the 6 game (where we will not gain relief from upfront payments).

I know he league has asked teams not to give out bonuses until the CBA is signed to exert pressure on the CFLPA to get a deal done quick, but that was just a request, right?  Teams can make 2018 SMS$ payouts for 2019 and beyond deals if they wish, right?

You can sign a few players right now. It's pretty safe to assume the SMS won't go down, so if they are willing to play for the same money or just a small increase the Bombers can make it happen. However guys like Biggie will have to wait until there is some clarity on the SMS for this year.
