0 interest in it personally. I really hope it does not decrease the chances of sending players to the Olympics.

If a Sharks goes down during the tournament I will be incredibly pissed they were injured for nothing. I'm already pretty worried about the extra games played factoring into fatigue.

Yeah me too...no interest.  The hockey is decent.  I'm not sure the players are jacked to play hard at this time of the year.

Echoing Colton...perhaps this is a bit paranoid of me, but my sense is that this is something the NHL management cooked up to distract fans from the olympics and will be saddened if unfortunately I am correct... and more so if someone like Buff gets injured.

I'm not really sure about it. I don't like that's it's not country verses country. The awesome thing about winning the Olympics or the World Juniors is you can say you are the best country in the world at hockey (professionally or U20).

With this the winner will say what? They have the best team within the eligibility rules the NHL set-up? I don't really see the point. It will probably be good hockey though, so I'll watch some, but if Canada doesn't win so what? It's not best against best.

Ya that fact it's really no best on best wrecks it for me but I'm hoping for a Canada Vs North America final (think it is possible)

"we'll find out who owns this game?"

What a dumb dumb slogan.

Who own's it? FREAKING NO ONE!!!!

Who came up with that gem Bettman and his money hungry crownies

Wheeler led all players with 7 hits in just over 12 minutes of ice time the last game.
Not sure what happened but there were 6 penalties at the 20:00 mark of the 3rd period!

Canada beat Russia 3-2 in OT. Getzlaf scored the winner.

Didn't watch the game in it's entirety, so can't really offer any insight lol but Getzlaf's goal was a beaut. Russia made a bad line change. Overheard the announcer say that Price didn't look fairly confident most of the night. Team Canada starting goalie hasn't been decided yet, apparently.

Not totally true. Two of ours are on rosters. Sounds like both Pavelec and Hellebuyck are the #3 goalies on their respective teams.

I read today that Schiefle might be playing on a line with McDavid and Mathews! If so that head over heals a great reason to watch team NA!!

That would make it extra fun to watch what Mark can do with line mates like that!!!

Canada's back-to-back goals in 14 second really set the tone. That third goal (Duchene's second) essentially sank the Americans.

Big win for our boys!

Totally agree. Zero interest. I sure hope this is a wake up call to the NHL if they think this is an adequate replacement for the Olympics.

From the standpoint of the league's financial situation, I'd imagine the bosses think it is. It sure doesn't have the same feel as the Olympics, though, that's for sure.

Ideally, having a WCH and Olympics every other year would be the best, IMO.

I'd be able to enjoy it a lot more if I didn't see it as a war on sending players to the Olympics.

If it was simply a supplement to the Olympics for extra revenue and to test ideas for the league (full board animated ads, jersey ads, rule changes, etc) I would be fine with it. I still wouldn't consider the results to be as important as the Olympics, but I think I would be able to get into a team and cheer them on.

I'm not so sure it'll be a sweep. Halak has been mighty in net and there's something about this Europe team that just screams resilient to me.

I think Canada wins it all but I can see Europe stealing a close game in OT. They got that plucky underdog going for them.

Such a crap atmosphere. No patriotism . It's like watching another regular game. NA was the best to watch. Personally don't really care for this tourney.  Got turned off from it when they announced continental teams.

Tis a good idea IMO.

Gives guys from other Country's and guys that cant make Canada or the USA a place to play and compete.

Olympics should be 100% for amateurs, as it was meant to be.  Wanna make millions?  You just sold your chance to play for your country.

Six teams of millionaires playing for their "countries" even though most will live in the US or Canada now, and some US and Canadian kids playing for NA and other guys left out playing for "the rest of the world".  And people wonder why there are empty seats and no viewership?

Hey, why not make it more even, make the Canada team Manitoba/West and Ontario/east.  I'm not sure that we couldn't form a team from the guys that didn't make team Canada that wouldn't be playing for silver now...

Would the red army team make a big comeback?  Who cares.  Its the Olympics.

Its like Olympic Basketball.  Once they let the pros in, it a race for Silver, or maybe a Cinderella story.  Hockey, same thing.  A little closer, but still half a dozen teams competing for the medals, with Can and the US the fav for gold.

World Cup, Spengler Cup, Hlinka, blah blah blah...   the Stanley Cup is the trophy.  Anything else, second rate.

Is the run for the cup now a best of 3 games? I'm confused. I had minimal interest throughout the tournament but with the Jets preseason up and running, I have pretty much zero interest now in the WCH. Why is the NHL overlapping this tournament with its own NHL preseason? Dumb.

The reason Olympic hockey is so popular is because it's best on best.

It would lose so much by going amateur. Then it's just the World Junior tourney, held once every four years. We already get it every year.

...As it was meant to be in 1896? Because it hasn't been like that since 1986.

Today, hockey players make more money than athletes from a lot of other sports but most of the athletes still compete professionally. In fact, professional athletes are allowed to compete is every event in the Olympics except boxing and wrestling and even in those sports there is talk of letting them.

The 'amateur athlete' rule might have made sense 100 years ago, but it doesn't anymore, which is why it was changed.

A whole lot of cluelessness and ignorance in this post. Yikes.

Worst of all, none of this hot garbage nonsense has anything to do with the WCH. Give yourself a pat on the back, Aardsy... Another gem of a post. Do yourself a favour next time and get familiar with the big world of hockey and the significance of the international tournaments you just dumped on dismissively.

Bingo.

I love the "Best on best" argument.  Coming from Canada, where "the Best" are, it is very easy to love a "Best on Best" tourney like this.  And have it held in Canada.

But the reception to it has been wonderful, packed venues, huge ratings, and a 3 game final that everyone is gaga over.

Heck, even Team Europe doesn't think there is a game 3 needed...

The Stanley Cup is "Best on Best".  The best players on the best team, put together by the best executives and coached by the best coaches.

Bringing borders into the discussion does not make it better, in my opinion.

And why not make the world junior championship skip every fourth year, and make it the Olympics?  It would give junior programmes the world over a boost in funding, and allow a more level playing field for development.

I didn't think you could top your last post, so well done. Give yourself a pat on the back. Cheesy

The WCH is a revenue stream for the NHL and NHLPA. It also provides entertainment. You know, like every other sport on Earth. Same as the Olympics.

And why would the IIHF ever change the U20 World Junior Championship to every four years...? What a stupid idea that is.

I believe he meant that the Juniors would run every single year as it does, but that for some reason every 4th year the Juniors would be the Olympics...

The idea of it is ok. But don't call it World Cup. It's not. Does Italy and Germany etc split up their teams of young stars? Or FIFA mess with teams like that? No and they never will. This tourney should of been called something else like hockey challenge cup or world hockey challenge or whatever.

Canada takes it 2-1.  I wish the Jets had a line with Toews and Marchand.

Its not fair, really.  It should be the entire WORLD vs CANADA.  Shocked Grin Wink

LOL

Canada could make 2 teams and finish 1-2

Would you rather watch us play Germany or a Euro team made up of the best from countrys that may not be able to feed a roster to compete with the best?

It was a fun tourney to watch .

Canada swept the series so there is no game 3. Also, ACC seemed pretty packed so the draw is definitely there.

How about that beauty of a pass to Marchand from our boy Toews for the game winner?

that was the play of the tournament! They seem to love Toews at the ACC he always got a loud, As much as Crosby, roar whenever introduced.

The game was utterly boring though. Only time I found myself FF through parts of a team Canada final.

A mostly boring game until the final five or so minutes and Team Canada looked mostly flat and slow until getting their first goal. Toews' feed to Marchand on the GWG was just beautiful.

And yet, even with Canada front and centre, it didn't draw flies...

I hope game 3 of the finals is entertaining...

Not sure what games you've been watching but attendance has been solid and even then, tickets were sold out. The World Cup of Hockey was meant to be a revenue stream and with estimates exceeding well over $100M, that's exactly what it's done.

And the final was a best of three. Canada won two, so it's over.

Honestly Id rather watch Canada play a nation. For a world cup. Not  another Canadian team. If you are going to mess with a world cup structure and format then dont call it a world cup because it isnt. The success of this tourney really showed that. No hype, half empty arena..no party at maple leaf square etc. I can't believe people are actually surprised at that. From day 1, I said its not going to work. Sure the hockey was fun to watch at times but it wasn't a world cup feel. If this team had only nations in it with out those mixed teams this tourney would of had ALOT more hype.

Whats boring is watching Canada beating up on a team from Denmark.

Its much better to take the few good players from country's that don't have a full team and make them one.

The NHL tried a new format with amalgamated teams and it seemed like a success. Team North America was highly entertaining to watch and team Europe made it to the final.
