Wow

Connor McDavid signs eight-year, $100 million extension with Oilers
Contract for 20-year-old center will have average annual value of $12.5 million, highest salary cap charge in League
Rumors were $13.25 million so that's $1.5 lower than the max he could have gotten under the CBA.

You have to wonder, looking at the long view, paying him 12.5 mil when he is still an RFA and only eligible for a fraction of that that you control, you are overpaying him for a handful of years.  I'm sure he signs an 8 year deal in 4 years, where they could have paid him $40 mil less until then... I can't see the cap rising enough to give back that value on the back end of the deal...
Unabashed positron.  Blue koolaid in my fridge.  I wear my blue sunglasses at night.  Homer, d'oh.

I'd rather have Scheifele at $6 million per season vs McDavid at $12 million.

I think the Oil will get every dime of that back in play from CM. He's the real deal, and I hate to say it.

Lucky.

that is a whole different situation though. We were very fortunate that he has been a slow progressing player that has landed at elite status last season.

Mark signed with us after a 60 pt season at the age of 23. Mcdavid just came of a 100 pt season at 20 and won the hart, ross and Lindsay. If his negotiations were this year we would of been screwed. His best comparable in skill and age would be Kuznetsov (winger) who peaked at 77 pts last year and hit 59 pts this season. he scored 7.8 mill per year for 8 seasons.
I couldn't imagine how much we would have to pay mark if his negotiations were this season...8-9 per if we wanted him long term for sure.

that being said. I would take McJesus over Mark all day. taking the homer goggles off he is just a phenomenal player.

The negotiation of Ehlers contract next season is going to be very interesting if he exceeds his previous season of 64 pts and 7th in the NHL in 5v5 production.

wonder what we do with Trouba this year as well? I hope he agrees to resign.

We were lucky with Mark. That said, the Oilers better hope they have some success this season while CM is still on his rookie deal or they're going to have a whole lot of seasons where McDavid drags the team into the play offs, but they can't go all the way because they have **** for depth behind him.

His cap hit % is in the realm of the ovi/Crosby signings when they were young so I don't think they will screwed for depth but a lot of that will be on the shoulders of their GM in the aspect of good drafting, trading and UFA signings.  Watching the Penguins this season and last have shown the hockey world that you can win with very little depth, two top Centers and good goaltending (better defence in their last cup win though). So I think anything can be possible. If he is able to drag them to the playoffs 8 of 8 seasons then that is still a win as they have a 1/16 shot of possibly winning a cup.

we are very fortunate in how Mark turned out and our fantastic rate! best contract negotiation ever, based on how his ppg was trending at the end of that season when he got to play first line minutes I thought he might garner a bit more.

You ever notice the dip in the Pittsburgh Penguin play off success between 2009-2014 exactly coincides with Crosby's 2nd contract?

it also coincides with their coaching according to some pitts fans that I know. Mike Sullivan has been a very good change for them and no doubt at all that the cap rising has helped them as well.

I am a believer that if you make the playoffs at all you are doing something right and you have a 1/16 shot at winning the cup. They did stumble with one Conference final, three first round exits and two 2nd round exits but even with a large % of the cap space they were still were actively competing in the playoffs and being a very competitive team.

Will be interesting to see if McDavid can bring the same success to the Oilers.

Uh, the Penguins were still one of the top teams in the league during those years. Under Byslma, their style of play didn't work well in the post-season (save the '09 run). And then with Johnston, his style just stifled their offensive ability. Sullivan found a way to strike a balance and it's resulted in back to back championships.

What does that have to do with Crosby signing a contract? It isn't like their roster wasn't balanced because of it.
