I never enjoy defending Aardvark but Shipachyov is very much a newsworthy signing. He's a first/second line caliber center.

Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya are together again, at long last.

There was no doubt the Finnish Flash would be among the Hockey Hall of Fame's Class of 2017, the only question was who would join him. Turns out, the five-year wait for Selanne's long-time teammate and close friend is over.

Kariya was announced as one of the Hockey Hall of Fame's newest inductees on Monday afternoon, joining Selanne, Dave Andreychuk, Mark Recchi, as well as Team Canada women's star Danielle Goyette, and builders Clare Drake and Jeremy Jacobs.

McDavid 8 years 13.5 mil per?  Yikes... and some are questioning why he'd take 8 years (he'll be 29? when its done).  8 years guaranteed?  In a heartbeat.  And after 8 years, he can get his big contract

And that is still under the maximum contract of $15mil/year under the current CBA/cap.  (max contract 20% of current cap).   20%?  Wow.. having 20% of your cap in one player...  he'd better be worth it.

It was no different with the Penguins when Crosby signed his first standard contract. Similar percentage of the cap back then for a generational talent.

Of course McDavid will be worth it. He cleaned up the NHL Awards after just coming off an incredible sophomore season, and would've probably won the Calder the year before had be not been injured. He's pretty much the face of the league going forward and an immensely talented piece around which the Oilers can build a contender. I'm interested to see what Draisatl ends up getting now.

It would've been funny to see McDavid take a $9.7M/year contract, but an additional ~$4M is hard to turn down.

No disputing that McDavid is all the wonderful things said by all our posters ........... but at 18% of the Cap of $75M ....... good luck to the Oilers for depth players.

Its doable as the cap will keep rising and with some good GMing will be able to build a team around him.

Oilers will have 3 million more with Pou on waivers for buyout (Just happened today). A long with Oilers made up for Eberle 6 million to Strome 2.5. Oilers also got extra 2 mill from cap. As well Nuge wont be staying here with 6 million dollars so that will go down by end of this year as he wont be a Oilers to much longer, unless he works out that contract. Oilers have room and Drai and McDavid 2 contracts will be likely around same as Pitts, Chi one two punches. theyre around 21 mill. When you have two great players you gotta pay up. Both where top 10 In nhl scoring.

PC has literally ripped old boys club apart and brought in all his own roster, signings and trades! What a roster its been!

Yes, you needed to do what you had to to keep CM in an Oiler jersey. But you can't pretend that this isn't going to hurt the rest of the roster.

The GM is just going to have to work harder and smarter to stretch their money and obtain players to build around McDavid. Obviously some fat will have to be cut sooner than later (RNH, Lucic).

We really lucked out that Mark did not blossom early and we were able to get a ridiculously good value at 6.1 AAV. Imagine if we had to resign him after he just hit 80+ points lol. His comparable would be kuznetsov who just landed a 7.8 AAV for 8 years after coming off a 59 pt campaign     If I was mark I would be choked seeing a lesser player  make 10+ million on paper (obviously not after taxes) more than you a year later.
