That's the risk involved. It helps bolster their blue line, which should help their chances at a deep run.

Anyway, it isn't like the draft is deep this year.

Six days after receiving the green light from the NHL, the Vegas Golden Knights signed free-agent forward Reid Duke to a three-year entry level contract on Monday, marking the first player transaction in team history.

Duke, 21, has racked up 35 goals and 67 points in 54 games as an overage centre with the WHL?s Brandon Wheat Kings this season. The 6-foot, 190-pound Calgary native was originally drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the sixth round, 169th overall, of the 2014 NHL draft.

The Wheat Kings are owned by Vegas assistant general manager Kelly McCrimmon. Duke would also be familiar with current teammate and June?s potential No. 1 pick, Nolan Patrick.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek pulled no punches when it came to the increasing likelihood that National League Hockey players won't be taking part in next year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"Absolutely ridiculous," Voracek told CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio on Thursday of the situation.

"We have it once every four years," Voracek said. "I read something that Bill Daly said we're not going. Nobody wants you to go. The players want to go. Why you're saying you're not going? You're not part of the players association. ... Nobody wants you there. They want the players."

"The players want to go, I guarantee you that," Voracek said. "I want to see how you are going to hold Ovechkin back. The Russian players. Tell them they can't go."

"It's the Olympics," Voracek said. "It's not just about business. You want to be part of the Olympics. And trust me, players want to go. And the players who don't go get a week off to recharge their batteries. If you have bumps and bruises, you can heal and recover."

Pittsburgh and \Lemieux usually deliver a message about safety after they have some of their  dirtiest players get suspended. Theyre " worried" other teams might take a shot at |Crosby or Malkin..They have been a cheap shot team for a few years with |Lemieux running that team.

I thought the Olympics were supposed to be for amateur athletes, not professionals, when did they change the rules so NHL and NBA players can participate ??

Also, will be interesting if the NHL decides not to go, but Ovechin and others go anyways ---could get ugly...

Sad to see another weak decision ........ just a 2 game suspension for Tkachuk for flipping such a blatant, intentional elbow to Doughty's face.

Quite a few decades ago ....... ugly, high elbow cheap shots were just part of the so called hockey norm., played in a game.  Fans expected to see this crap at most games.
Retaliation was cheered & teams with bullies intimidated others. The refs allowed flagrant use of sticks & free wielding elbows & fists while teams took care of on ice justice.

Today this garbage, when it takes place, should be dealt with more severely. Tkachuk should easily have gotten 5 games or more.
