The crazy thing is that if he could control his play  -  bring out that cannon of a shot when needed -  forget the dipsy doodling and just go back to basics while still using his incredible skating ability - the guy would be a Norris shoo-in almost every year.

Dennis Wideman's 20-game suspension was reduced to 10 games by neutral discipline arbitrator James C. Oldham Friday. Wideman has already served 19 games of the suspension.

While the Flames defenceman can't get back the nine extra games he's missed, he will get back half of the $564,516 he was slated to lose.

Oldham: "Wideman did not, in my opinion, 'deliberately strike' Henderson." Reasoning: Absent intent, allowed for 10-game ban under Rule 40.3

The league released a statement shortly after saying they disagreed with the decision.

"We strenuously disagree with the Arbitrator's ruling and are reviewing the Opinion in detail to determine what next steps may be appropriate."

Wideman was suspended in early February for conduct violative of Rule 40 (Physical Abuse of Officials). Wideman skated into a referee and knocked him down while making his way back to the bench in a game January 27.

The NHLPA filed an appeal on Wideman's behalf after that ruling, claiming the veteran defenceman was unintentional and accidental.

So, after serving 19 games, he gets it reduced to 10... does that mean the Flames have to pay him for those 9 games?  I guess it goes back to him instead of the benevolent fund, the fFlames were still paying it out.

Does he get to bank the "time served"?  Just in case he gets suspended again?

From what I had heard weeks ago .......... any reduction from 20 games gives him $$ back for those games, as if he played.

This is a joke of a decision. As a former hockey official myself and the blatantly obvious evidence regardless of the "grade" of his concussion this decision continues the slippery slope the NHL is headed in.


Wideman deserved every bit of those 19 games he served. I as well am very curious to see what happens now that he has served 19 games and charged with only 10?

I guess if he nails another official after being concussed he'll only get an 11 game suspension more or less.

And now we get to listen to Brian Burke go on another one of his mad Irishman rants with his stupid slicked hair and raunchy purposeful undone tie. Lame to say the least!

What I can't figure out is how this decision fell on the shoulders of a single individual. Why not a panel of 4 or 5 arbitrators who each give their feedback on what happened?

This was goalie Henrik Lundqvist again storming off to the locker room at SAP Center before the game was over, his team having hung him out to dry as they gave up three goals in a span of 3:20 in the third period en route to a disheartening 4-1 loss to the Sharks on Saturday afternoon.

Things started falling apart early in the third period, first when Tomas Hertl skated up the right wing and around Dan Girardi like he was standing still. Lundqvist was able to stop Hertl's attempt, but Joe Thornton easily cleaned it up into the open net for a 2-1 lead at 5:45. Less than two minutes later, Kevin Hayes turned it over at his offensive blue line and then hardly moved as the Sharks started up the ice on a three-on-two. Joel Ward brought it to the right dot and fired one through Lundqvist's legs, where it trickled over the goal line for a 3-1 lead.

When Joe Pavelski finished another odd-man rush off the leg of a sprawled out Lundqvist at 9:05, that made it 4-1, and Vigneault called for Raanta out of the bullpen. Lundqvist went storming off to the locker room in complete anger.
